+Matthew Lapping Ace of Base began to die when Linn, who never wanted to be famous to begin with (she only joined the band because Jonas asked/pushed her to), grew weary of being a pop singer (and wary of crazy stalkers and disgusted by record company jackasses like Clive Davis), and put herself more in the background. Then the band really died when she finally left about a decade later, followed about two years afterward by Jenny, who was never given much of a chance. As you say, the second lineup was really a new band entirely, as there is no replacing Linn and Jenny--especially such a unique and beloved singer as Linn, who since the beginning was a crucial part of the sound and success of Ace of Base.
Jonas now acknowledges this, too, after previously implying that Ace of Base was he, Ulf, and any two female singers they could plug into the lineup. Apart from the ever-present factors of luck and timing, he recently listed Linn first in the category of talent, ahead of himself, when explaining the success of the band. Unless she and Jenny have a major change of heart, Ace of Base will be on permanent hiatus from now on--I seriously doubt that they would attempt another comeback without Linn, and being without Jenny could raise issues as well. They're probably finished as an active band, but they still have at least two full albums worth (and quite possibly more) of recorded (some only as demos) unreleased songs, the vast majority of which feature Linn's vocals in addition to Jenny's. For many, these will be like new releases, I suppose.
In fact, about one-third of the "Hidden Gems" album is made of songs--excellent quality, genuine Ace of Base songs--that were recorded in 2005 for an album that was never finished for some reason. They just stopped working on it during the same year (Ulf said that the band ran out of energy), and Linn left two years later, sending the band into turmoil. I can't hear anything wrong in these songs, though--Linn and Jenny both sound fantastic, with Linn sounding as iconic as ever as Ace of Base's signature voice; she had even planned to rejoin Jenny onstage in a full capacity, which Jenny publicly said she was very happy and excited about, before things mysteriously came to a screeching halt. At least those songs have been released now, but as I said there are many more still to come sometime in the future, despite Ace of Base being "dead" as an active band (and to me the replacement singers don't count--as far as I'm concerned the band died either in 2005, when they stopped working on that new album, or in 2007 when Linn left).

I'd love to see AOB with these singers. The spirit lives on.

This IS Ace of Base, with the music and lyric composers still there.
