It's sad to see India a dirty mess today, there are no clean streets and it's not just the governments fault because people just throw their garbage on the streets and simply don't care to keep their wonderful culturally rich country clean. Hope Indians had more pride for their country and kept it clean and beautiful.
Hi Gopal, I'm not European. I'm infact an Indian who lives in India and sees it first hand everyday how Indians throw their trash on the roads and public streets. Even historical sites and tourist spots are treated like garbage bins. There is almost no place you can go in India were there is no plastic waste laying around. So please don't blame history but try to mend our own ways and start treating your own country like your home and not the dustbin.
HeavyLikesSandwich, I am sorry for identifying you as European. I too feel ashamed on our habits. But your raising of this concern over here is not correct due to context and topic of the video. However, let's work to change the situation on Indian streets.
You have a point Gopal, but i just want us Indians to talk about this issue and combat it through open communication. Because i feel like it's still very much frowned upon in India to tell a fellow Indian not to litter as we generally get a rude and harsh response because they don't see anything wrong in their actions unfortunately.
@@HeavyLikesSandwich I agree with you totally. My parents are from India and they agree with you. Indians have no sense of cleanliness at all. It was here India's first ever newspaper was printed. It was the site of Asia's first ever museum. Calcutta was a hub of the world's second largest railway system. It was in Calcutta that the British discovered the link between malaria and the mosquito - the greatest medical discovery ever made in India to this day. A great city - it had been British since 1690, and was only taken for about 6 months by the Bengalis in 1756 - whose soldiers fled at the sight of the returning British ships, offering no defence. The land was originally legally sold to the East India company (in 1689) and never "conquered" so-to-speak, it was probably sold because it was considered a swampy useless bit of land, and the rulers of Bengal wanted export revenue tax from an EIC river port. There were three fishing villages on the land (in 1690) one of which had been abandoned, the others only having a few dozen inhabitants, none of the the villages were called "Kolkata" or Calcutta, and the aforementioned villages were never considered a single unit before British purchase. Nobody is really sure why the British started calling their newly constructed town Calcutta, as Calcutta or Kolkata never appeared in any maps or documents prior to British purchase, it's a mystery where the name came from - but the name "Kolkata" was probably just a Bengali pronunciation of "Calcutta" - the name Calcutta preceding Kolkata. In the 1901 census Calcutta had about one million inhabitants, less than 1% of that total was British, including garrisoned troops. The British made the city the capital of what is now India, Pakistan, Burma and Bangladesh, the decisions made there applied from the modern borders of Thailand to the modern borders of Iran. / These are all FACTS , whatever your opinion of British rule, everything I have written is factual.
@zaclang6472 The name Kolkata comes from one of the three villages: Kalikata, Satanuti and Gobindapur that was leased by the East India Company. Calcutta is the anglicized form of Kolikata (also spelled Kalikata) not the other way round!
@@indrajitg Kalikata is not Kolkata, if it were. they would have just called it "Kalikata" . "Calcutta is the anglicized form of Kolikata" - that is pure supposition, nobody knows why it was called CALCUTTA, and "Kalikata" is very easy for any English person to say, not like "Tiruchirappalli" or "Thiruvananthapuram", (etc.) so there was no real reason to Anglicize it, you're just stating something as a fact that simply isn't known.
@@zaclang6472 There are a tonne of city names that got mangled in the process of being anglicized - not just in India but all over the erstwhile British empire. Even Singapore's name was mangled from Shingha-puram (city of lions). Besides Kalikata or Kolikata or Kolkata are all written in English. If you really want to know the real pronunciation then you reed to be able to vocalise Bangla script, which sounds like ko-li-kaa-taa. The presence of the three villages and their names are very well documented. I cannot add references in a TH-cam comment but you can surely Google if you have an interest in this topic.
@@indrajitg The problem here is political actually, by claiming that Kalikata and Kolkata are one and the same, then the follow-on argument is that the village of Kalikata was the pre-British starting point of of the city of Kolkata, - so then, by definition of the name the British "never founded Kolkata because it pre-existed", ..... OK .... but the initial EIC settlement of Calcutta in the early 1690's, (which is now the heart of the older part of the city) was constructed over Govindapur (or "Gobindapur") NOT KALIKATA! They renamed Govindapur CALCUTTA (nobody knows why) and Kalikata and Calcutta actually existed alongside each other, so how was Calcutta an anglicized version of Kalikatta if both existed alongside each other and they were two different places? I have studied the etymology of the name of "Calcutta" at an academic level (I don't need to Google it) reading 18th and 19th century British sources on the matter (such as Busteed). The origin of the name "Calcutta" is NOT KNOWN, that's what the British sources say. You may be correct that it is a anglicized version of "Kalikata" (perhaps) but there is zero evidence for this, and as I said: something pronounced CALI-CAT-ARE doesn't have to be anglicized, and CALCUTTA sounds less English than CALI-CAT-ARE anyway! I would be very interested if you would come forward with an academic argument with sources but "I'm right - you Google it" is just arrogance. As for "Singapore" that's definitely an anglicized form of Shingha-puram, but then .... I never stated that the British never anglicized any names ever, so I don't even know what your point is. Also the fact that both Kolkata and Kalikata have the godess Kali connection in the word, means little, as 1000+ towns and villages across India have the "Kali" prefix - it's too common to form an automatic link.
What stopped you to gain it back. This is no excuse for being underdeveloped and dirty like Kolkata is today. See ex colonies like Singapore they have turned themselves. Its just our lithergy and attitude to blame everything on someone else.
@@SohailAmin everyone's case is different. Even if india thrive today it won't change the fact that british empire made the country backstepped for a hundred year.

I like the Britishers. Why? For centuries the Hindus were persecuted by the Muslims. The Hindus became poor. Their culture was systematically grounded to dust. Hindu criminals changed their religion to get royal pardon. Poverty also helped a lot in conversion. Brave rajputs, the local Warlords, gave their daughters to the emperor (so called marriage) to save their royalty. Division between cultured rich Muslims and poor uncultured Hindus was natural. Few Hindus like Maharaj Shivaji, Guru Govind Singh etc were fighting relentless war against Muslims, but without any hard results. The Britishers came and settled the centuries old issue of domination. They looted India. We cannot blame them as they had the right to loot a conquered country. Pointlessly, we still believe their governance hypocrisy that they came to civilize us. Without their help, India would have been a major islamic country of the world.

We owe so much to this half naked fakeer gandhiji(the mahatma). We won the battle and his methods of non violance worked our independence is the proof of the same. Bhagat singh and revolutionaries were there only for 3 years in esrly 1920's and their violent methods were dealt heavyhandedly by british. it was our political leaders like gandhi nehru Tilak patel etc. who are the real heroes. they led the mass movement and infused socialist ideas(which was necessary at that time). There was parallel struggle continuing somewhere when this video was film. Try to widen your thinking look past these propagandist videos and read good books. Yes we are not divided only diverse but when some external agency try to assert their rule we opposed it as a single unit. Later posion of communalism was introduced by british to bring disunity among hindu and muslims which ultimately led to formation of pakistan. This is only single fault of national freedom movement of struggle. Other than that we fought and won. We should be proud of it,
I was wondering who this guy was? Why so much of a show? It turned out that this guy Earl Lytton was born in India. His father was viceroy when he was administering India from Calcutta and this chap himself became governor of Bengal as well as acting viceroy in 1926. So, Calcutta was his home coming.
Sandipan Mukherjee I am not aware as how he ran the Bengal governorship or as acting viceroy. Whether it was with iron hand or with compassion. Because there were many reasonable English people in high posts too ruling the country even at that time. Every body was not mad like general Dyer. In fact , most Indians trusted British more than themselves in 1920's. There was a lot of turmoil going on in India though at the time as Gandhiji 's magic started binding India together. Bengal was the leading state(it went into turmoil after 1905 Bengal partition), the root cause for British giving up on india. 1921 was the first Satyagrah under Gandhi. Until then India had not demanded any freedom from British. They were thinking that we are better off under British rule only. There was a big debate on type of freedom, we need. In 1921, Ireland had broken free from British empire. It gave India the idea. So our flag is also not very much different than of Ireland. In the beginning, we all wanted a dominion status like Australia, Canada. But then finally, looking at Ireland, in 1929, India or Congress leader Nehru raised the demand for full freedom at Ravi in Lahore. So, in 1926 when this guy was ruling as acting viceroy, he was ruling India as his legitimate territory. As is the case that ruler always decides how he treats the public, that is how it goes in life. Being Indian and grandson of a freedom fighter, I can not condone their behaviour though but I am thinking even today, how our landlords treats dalits and burn, rape their daughters and hang them with tree, burn the father of a daughter after violating her, throw the whole community out by burning their houses. Thinking of our behaviour (upper cast) about them fills me with horror. Even British at that time look so much innocuous. So, we only remember our grief and not the grief of a downtrodden in India. There are more downtrodden in India than upper caste people.
Sandipan Mukherjee I wouldn't try to confront you. You are happy with your thoughts. Keep them. Sometimes, people become enlightened much later on and start focusing on themselves rather than other. Maybe revisiting my comment then will make sense. Cheers.

I was just in Jabalpur in Oct 2018 and it is still a very dirty city, nothing has changed in 40 years.
Thank you, very well said.
They destroyed us, our unity our uniqueness and Bengali identity as a whole. The gem of the British empire (Bengal) is now tin khond.
What stopped you to gain it back. This is no excuse for being underdeveloped and dirty like Kolkata is today. See ex colonies like Singapore they have turned themselves. Its just our lithergy and attitude to blame everything on someone else.

Wonder how Bengal tigers he killed?

Nehru and gandhi were able to survive being puppets of British. You can see what happened to bhagat singh, netaji, savarkar, sukhdev and others who publically opposed them
Not meekley don't forget all the wars battle of plessy(1757) battle of buxar(1764) anglo mysore wars(4 of them with tipu sultan and his father), then anglo maratha war, then awadh rebellion 1857 or sepoy mutiny as britishers call it. Then there was void in national leadership to wage a struggle against british but when gandhi joined in after hi success in africa we developed struggle tempo one after another swadesi movement (1905) non coperation movement (1920-21) civil disobediance movement(1930-31) quit india movement(1942) .
Gee Kay and he had done terrible things to his home land..that British bastards
Cheers.
Gee Kay you don't have to..we forgive them but never forget what have they done..and yeah truth is they were brutal towards us..and that's why I'm not going to soft on them.. they are still insulting us in their media..have plenty of proof though..and buddy India don't need your approval now.. we're going fine as we are so important global power now..we don't give a heck to Britain..lol.. we have more than enlightened people than any other countries of the world..we born with that perception and humanity..you don't need to care about our enlightment..stop potraiting those British who ruled us for centuries and make us slaves..we don't want to hear a single thing about it..our ancestors gone through a huge pain..that you can't imagine..so stop lecturing here..
Sandipan Mukherjee The only reason, i had stopped here and responded back because i thought you were Bengali. I had great admiration for the contribution of Bengali in India 's nationhood. Alas my perception misled me. Enjoy your own company and echo chamber. Extrospection is the way most indulge in these days. Freedom has its downsides. Clean the toilets of British in India or clean our own roads, Choice is ours.
Mere mockery of ego and esteem, which eventually dissolved with time
Only Tipu Sultan know the secret of EIC imagine if Tipu wins against EIC then our parliament in Mysore
But marathas and Nizam of hyderabad betrayed him.
PEOPLE WERE MUCH MORE HAPPIER IN THOSE DAYS...THOSE DAYS WERE MUCH BETTER..!!

I might be working with the British instead of corrupt government.
We have to be disciplined just turning the clock to 1890s to
1980s.
Like this comment if you want to live for India and rescue India from corruption.

The British were disciplined
That's why they ruled all over the country...

This was after the British ran away from Calcutta and shifted the Capital to Delhi. It was much quieter there.
Earl of Loot
Still there are old British people longing for the British empire to come back. As Churchill said " "It is alarming and nauseating to see Mr Gandhi, a seditious Middle Temple lawyer, now posing as a fakir… striding half-naked up the steps of the Vice-regal Palace,".
Churchill was one of the most brutal creature of colonies history
Yes churchill remarked this when gandhi was climbing viceregal steps to attend second round conferance (in nov. 1931) in London after being pursuaded by lord irwin. Congress didn't attend first RTC (but muslim league did).
All have died now
We are control by many emperor's but british with few numbers has proven there ability to control such a huge continent nearly 200 years.
0:35 is this Sealdha station??
X Man Howrah.
i am not sure but I read somewhere there were 1200 British civil servants
How the ruled with indians in there army means we all were antinationals
What a beautiful and well maintained city Calcutta was at the time. Now it's a stinking hell hole.
Why showing the White area of Calcutta where British used to live, which only accounts 15% of entire Kolkata?
Better you show the real picture of Kolkata where 4 million Bengalis died due to manufactured famine by British Raj from time to time also do not forget to show the black area of Kolkata where Indians used to live. The black area of Kolkata is even worst than today's Dharavi slum of Mumbai, which used to account for 50-60% area in Kolkata. Stop spreading the misinformation by showing the biased Video. Today Salt lake, sector5, Newtown and Rajarhat area of Kolkata looks thousand times more modern, clean, green and better than what is shown in this video, does that mean Kolkata is best city of India?? By showing a small proportion of developed area is best way of manipulating the public to believe that everything was absolutely fine during British rule in India.
Wow they use to come by train to howrah station and covoyed to Raj Bhawan. But the simple query is where from did they board the train Delhi ?
Yeah... Capital shifted to Delhi in 1911... So all major administrative work was done at Delhi... Highly probable they must be coming from Delhi
Avik Madhu roads are clean particularly in that area as that area was maintained by rhe Raj itself. They are always very much tidy & knows all etiquettes of cleanliness. One piece of littering would cost you ten brutal hunter slams which would always remind you next time if you try to do it again. However, go to other parts of the city where one could not find anything other than slums.
Mumbai... they came by ship to Bombay and then took the train to Calcutta.
...this wasn't the stone age ..
Air transport did exist , with multiple stops obviously.
Train then would've taken 2 days, by air, in 8-12 hours comfortably. Get off at Patna and train in

It's totally the fault of Mughal emperor Jahanghir that he'd permitted British East India company to India in 1605. Otherwise Britishers can't colonise India.
If british have not rulled india, india would be a islamic country today
Or may b there would b no India.. 5-10 small small counties like Pakistan n sri Lanka. At least they United us..

God loves you so much that He sent His Holy Son Jesus from heaven to earth, to be born of a virgin, to grow up and die on a cross for our sins, and to be put into a tomb 3 days and rise from the dead the third day, and He (Jesus) went back up to heaven. We must receive Sinless Jesus sincerely to be God's child(John 1:12).After we get saved by grace through faith in Christ, if we truly love the Lord Jesus Christ, then we will obey Jesus(John 14:15). Mark 1:15 "And saying, the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: Repent ye, and believe the gospel." Jesus said in John 14:15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments. "There's a real hell. It says in Revelation 21:8 "But for the cowardly, & unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone..." Please sincerely receive Holy Jesus and put your true faith and trust in Him today & please repent.
