Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah is a senior at Carleton College, studying sociology and anthropology. She works as a researcher for an educational consulting firm. Her future aspirations include attending law school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
Shane and Hannah have been dating for over 2.5 years and living together in Minneapolis in recent months. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

I just discovered these videos and I'm so glad I did. I'm 39 and have mental health issues (maybe reversable..maybe not) ..but watching this couple puts things in perspective for me..and makes me want to be a better person..and greatful for what I have in this life. I am alone and struggle with healthy relationships. I'm scared of people and dont get out much. I am a nurse. I take care of severely disabled individuals to give their parents a break at night. I've been taking care of people my whole life and put my own health on the back burner. I've struggled with addictions and self esteem issues. I dont know where I fit in. Emotional and psychological support is so important and I dont get it from my parents..and that is hard to accept. I want to thank you guys for sharing your life with us..your special relationship gives people hope in humanity and inspires. I am overly empathetic and very sensitive..and American culture is lacking in empathy. You guys are a breath of fresh air. God bless you. You're a great team

There is something about this video, among the other ones I’ve watched that really captures your love for each other. You both picked things you wanted changed about each other that would only help and better yourselves it wasn’t about what you don’t like and wanted changed for your own desires. This is rare and beautiful and shows how much you truly love each other!
I admire the level of respect, trust, and love that you two have for one another to be able to have a respectful discussion about things you dislike about the other.

I share your vids with my mom and i love the fact you have captions (and good ones!) on your videos. She is deaf and the biggest complaint about youtube is there is such a crap system for captioning. You two obviously understand disability and accessibility. It’s something little but the extra effort it takes to do that is so cool. I love your vids, keep up the great work! I love seeing your channel grow!
Yes I am deaf too and love how the captions are already there! Makes it so much easier and one of the many reasons why I love love love squirmy and grubs.
Im not deaf and Still benifit from them. sometimes it's hard to understand what someone said or I can't hear it very well cause they said it very quiet so I love captions.

Saaaame! I'm hard of hearing so sometimes watching TH-cam I have to rewind a lot and try and listen again and strain to do it. But the CC make it so much easier to understand so I can just focus on enjoying! :)

Dude! I also have muscular dystrophy and I love my Bi-Pap. It takes getting used to but you will feel SOO MUCH BETTER if you use it regularly! I've been using mine since 2002.

I have muscular dystrophy too and I didn't use to wear mine it took something to happen to me but now I use it every night, i have gotten use to it likes it's not even there

I just found out about this channel, and this is actually amazing. We as a human race need more people like you two in this world, people who don’t judge and are more interested in the person they truly are on the inside, and to have to go through so much in life and still be able to wake up every single morning with a smile on your face and not question why this happened to you but to make the best of what you have and just be genuinely happy, you two are some very incredibly strong individuals and together I can see from the short 7 mins of this video you two have a bond some people spend a lifetime looking for. If the world was full of people like yourselves we would actually have a world full of peace and love. Why did this video make me cry 😭 I just love the raw honesty and the true desire to build each other up.
That was some really good advice from Shane, not just for Hannah, but for a lot of us who notice anger or sadness or whatever emotion dictate how we respond to the events of the day. I’m going to carry that “reframe the situation” note with me for the next time I’m feeling upset and start to feel it spiraling.

OK firstly I can't believe you both just agreed that there is no risk in doing some physiotherapy after having read Shane's book! Although I'm assuming you're referring to specific things you know are safe and no crazy let's stretch some more therapist there.
Secondly, the way Shane framed what he said to soften it was so sweet. And the fact you can honestly talk about these things is the absolute healthiest strongest thing that can be in a relationship and is lovely to witness.

You guys have a better relationship than most couples. I had a motorcycle accident 2 years ago that injured my cervical and thoracic spine, and forced me to close my business and left me unable to work. While my disability isnt in the same ballpark, my wife and I have had to learn to live all over again, and the way you guys view challenges as adventures (perk), is really awesome and inspiring. We actually came across your channel while researching my upcoming 18th surgery, and glad we did. Much love guys

He explained the proportions and how you have to get it just right for balancing the flavours. I knew then I was in trouble. Pearls of wisdom “Reframe your response to things once you are angry.” Yep great advice as I think some passionate people go from 0 to 60 in one second with emotions. I know I do but I am also very compassionate. On the other hand, My husband is not passionate about much but rarely reacts to things that most people would go nuts over. That comes in handy when there is a crisis. It’s all about balance. You both are a good balance.
