I’ll never understand why ppl don’t lock their doors. What kind of world do they think they live in?
They were so fortunate to live to be able to tell the encounter. That sounds terrifying.

When I was little we never locked our door. Lived in a small town where everyone knew everyone and your neighbor was a mile away from you… when we moved we always locked the door I didn’t really understand then but now I get the difference between living somewhere with 600 people vs 80,000 people

"Dads don't get gut feelings, its always the mom"
Id like to tell you about a time my dad got a gut feeling.
Growing up, i liked riding my bike but never wore my helmet cause it was annoying and i was always fine.
One day i was going to ride my bike, my dad had a really bad feeling. Like i NEEDED to wear my helmet and i couldn't ride my bike until he found it and i put it on.
When i was riding my bike, my bike flipped over somehow like i was doing a trick in a skate park or something. I went over the bike handles and landed on my head.
The helmet was cracked open really bad. I cant imagine if i didn't wear it and that would have been my head.

The tornado one is relatable. In 2010, my family and I were at the St. Louis airport on our way home from Disney World when our flight got canceled due to severe weather. Well, turns out it was a tornado and I was having an anxiety attack in the airport bathroom at 7 years old (my birthday falls in July and this was in March or April) while my dad and grandpa just leaned against the glass windows as the rain blew sideways as the tornado ripped through the terminal next door. Dads don’t have gut feelings lol. And that’s one of the reasons why I’m so scared of storms. Tornadoes are no joke.

9:02 Was living by myself in a downstairs apartment; very low income area. Woman next door has "friends" over; one of them was very drunk; it's the middle of the night. I could hear him outside ranting and raving to himself, and peeked through my window, he was apparently trying to dismantle the wire of the clothes line outside. For some reason, I decided to sleep in the little spare bedroom which was nearer her front door (more to keep an "ear" on his shenanigans than actually sleep). Must have dozed off, because I wake up and I can hear someone trying to remove the glass louvres in this small bedroom (easy to twist out). I was so cranky at being woken up that I silently bent down, picked up one of my flip flops and pegged it at the person trying to break in. He took off (I realized then it was the drunk nut job from earlier). In the morning, I could see his hand prints on the glass where he'd tried to take all the louvres out. Wasn't scared at the time of the attempted break in, just angry. But slept for a few nights with a very sharp knife under my pillow and a can of fly spray right beside the bed (in my own bedroom this time) and then was really scared. He never came back.

When I was about 10 or 11 (in the early 1980s, mind you), I went to a party at the local skating rink, about five miles from my home. I got sick but didn't let them call my Mom. I, instead, walked out before they could stop me. I started walking home and some guy I didn't know stopped by me and asked if I need a ride. I was scared, but he seemed all right. He asked where i lived and I gave him the next door neighbor's address, instead of mine. He was surprised and asked if I knew he family, as he was good friends with them. I realized he knew I didn't live there, so I said the older girl was my best friend (we were actually mortal enemies, hated each other). He smiled and said, "don't worry. I'll get you home." And he drove me to my enemy's house. He let me out and said, "be careful hitch hiking. Dangerous people are out here." And I agreed and waited on the neighbor's porch, pretending to look for a key, even though he knew it wasn't my house. He drove off and I ran home.
I tell you this because I got lucky that time. He turned out to be a nice guy who did knew the family and wanted to make sure their friend got home safe.
Now, another time when I was far more aware, in more danger, and did (only) some things right:
In the very early 90's, I was in the Navy. It was pay day and I was in dress uniform (Uniform Whites), and it was very hot out. I wanted to get some comic books that would be coming in that day. So, I walked up the main street to the mall several miles away: in dress whites and heels. I was exhausted and dripping sweat. As I walked, I passed a used car sales location. The man offered me a drink and I refused, stupidly saying I was only going to get some comics. So he watched me continue my walk. Once I arrived, I poked my head in the door and said, "I'll be right back. I'm going to K-mart next. door to get some clothes to change into." The man standing next to the shop owner looked vaguely familiar, but I paid no mind and went next door. It was so hot, I bought a tank top and short shorts and tennis shoes to change into. I folded the uniform and heels into a bag and went back to the comic store. I bought several comics and headed for the door, and the guy next to the owner said, "it's so hot, why don't I give you a ride home?" Without thinking, I nodded and agreed. I got in the car and as he pulled away, I realized it was the car salesman. I grabbed a very sharp wooden pencil from my purse and slipped my hand down next to me, by the door, gripping tight in case I had to stab the guy in the eye or throat. He gave me bad vibes, but I reasoned I was exhausted and thirsty and in no condition to walk. Next time I would get a cab. I didn't think to get out and get a cab right then. He asked where I lived and I gave him an address on the block next to mine, instead of mine. I made sure he could see the pencil as I gestured while I spoke. When he pulled up to the neighbor, I went to the door and pretended to pull out my keys. He drove off. I crouched down in the bushes, but stayed put, and saw him drive around again. When he was out of sight the second time, I ran for my apartment building and banged on the door, despite having a key. The front desk man answered, looking confused and I pushed in telling him I was being followed. He slammed the door and locked it and kept an eye on the road as I ducked behind the desk. He described the car that passed (yes, it was the same guy) and told me to stay where I was hiding. Once the car didn't show up again for fifteen minutes, I finally went to my room.
What did I do right? Changed out of heels (or took them off - I can run in heels, but i's smarter not to), I got a weapon ready and wasn't afraid to use it if needed. I gave a nearby address to hide my own but knew someone would be there if I truly needed help. Once I got home, I didn't fumble with the door, I called for help instead, getting a witness and possible help in case of attack. I hid and let the driver see that there was a man in the place I was staying (a deterrent even if we don't like to admit it). This was BEFORE cellphones exists. I would have had to use a pay phone to call anyone.
What did I do wrong? I accepted that ride instead of calling a ride. Why? To save a few bucks, I guess. Not sure. Felt independent and able to care for myself, maybe. Felt vulnerable and stupid while int hat car, though.

About living alone: I for sure felt a bit of insecurity living alone during my exchange studies. I had no real network and if something happened to me, no one would react or wonder where I was for at least a week. Ofc I kept in contact with my parents every now and then, but it was not a daily thing. I got even more paranoid after a car bomb went off one block over, rattling my windows really hard in the middle of the night. (They had the national bomb squad search the area for more bombs)😐 I later returned to live in the same country, but with my fiancé (now husband). It felt better that there were two of us, keeping a close eye on one another 😊 I love Sweden but living there alone can be scary sometimes.

The story about the guy coming into the house near the floor-to-ceiling windows and looking for the person who was there alone is so scary. It reminds me of when I went to my home ciry for a vacation with my mom, sister and brother in law and we stayed at an AirBnB. Really nice big house, but the walls were really low (like a child could have easily jumped/climbed over) and there was a path right next to the bottom of garden, which was not even walled, it just had a flimsy fence between the path and the garden. The floor-to-ceiling windows around the living room also basically allowed anyone to see into the house, even from the street because of the low walls. We were also in the middle of nowhere with only the beach down the road on one side and a small church nearby. There was also a massive wild sugarcane field behind the house, and the sugarcane reached at least 7ft. tall. Anyway, on the second night we were there the house was broken into by a guy who had made a hole in one of the floor-to-ceiling windows near the lounge. I was fast asleep in the first bedroom (closest to the living room) but luckily I had locked the door that night before going to sleep for some reason. My sister woke up when she heard the noise of the glass falling (from the hole the guy had cut) and could hear the general shuffling around of the guy trying to get in and then fidgeting around the living room. She for some reason left her bedroom and I think the noise of the door opening scared off the guy, who probably thought we were all still fast asleep. She called the police - the local police station was not that far away actually - but they took ages to get there for whatever reason. In the meantime we turned on all the lights and packed up everything, even the food we had bought as we were supposed to stay there for 2 weeks. The police came in that time and one vehicle remained at the gate while the other drove onto the property to stand watch while we packed our stuff in the car. At least the last part is what I think happened. At this point it was nearing 3am and I was ao disoriented and in shock. As soon as everything was packed up we locked the house and left town, right then at 3am in the dark. We drove for a long time just to get closer to our home town, but at least we were able stay at a relative's house for a day or two - where we were safe, before ending our trip early and going home. We called the owner of the house who was renting it while they were away. That was crazy. I'm glad my sister at least heard the guy and eventually called the police, because the other three of us were seemingly fast asleep or would have slept through it. I'm also glad my door was locked in case the guy tried to come in. Also the house had those really thick, sturdy old-fashioned doors that aren't hollow, so at least it would be harder to get through. Although if the guy wanted to harm us I think he could have gotten to the other 3 because their doors weren't locked, so it's not that comforting. Anyway, I'm glad at least one of us woke up and was aware of what was going on. And that the man was scared away by my sister leaving her room rather than attacking her. First time we ever rented an AirBnB too.
