    Hello; I just stumbled on your lovely podcast and coincidentally just finished the Whitmoor cardigan. I did the second smallest size and it turned out beautifully. I also used long DPNs at the end which at first were fiddly but you do get used to it and you can see the benefits as the band grows. It really gives a firm and neat border. I loved not having to pick up buttonband stitches at the end.
    I also love your cardigan that you are wearing. You can never have enough pretty lace cardigans.
    Happy sewing and knitting.... Lisa

      Yay, I'm glad you found me and how funny we were both knitting the same thing. That's the size I'm making too. I have knit on a bit since this video and it is getting easier I just have to flick them out the way at the right point haha. I will be glad of no seaming up to do later because that's always my worst job! Thanks for watching x

    Same as you, can’t waste my time with toiles I can’t wear so I use a cheaper fabric and if it comes out well then I can wear it and remake as many times as I like with better fabric. The only toile I did make out of an old sheet was the ilford jacket and it was purely for the sizing and I’m glad I did as it really helped. X

      I feel the same. I made a toile of my Merlin Coat from an old duvet but as you say that was to check the fit. I don't really make much that involves a lot of fitting so I find I can usually tweak as I go... Thanks for watching :) x

    You can get double pointed cable needles that are straight rather than curved.they are quite sort and would likely work for your button band too. Although the curved ones would probably keep the stitches from falling off and be easier for what you are doing.

    • @SecretLifeOfASeamstress
      @SecretLifeOfASeamstress  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I did wonder about a cable needle but thought the stitches would end up falling off, you're right the curved ones might be better. Now that I've knit on a bit it's getting less of a fiddly but definitely something that I've not done before x

    Beautiful fabrics, it will be lovely to see them all made up. In decades of sewing, I have hardly ever made a toile. I much prefer pinning pattern pieces together and slipping them on, as recommended by May who appeared in the earlier GBSB series.
    I'm afraid the sound was very patchy for me too. I live in the same county and would love to be able visit a "real live" fabric stall - would you be prepared to reveal the location of the market stall selling your green fabric ?

    Hi Sally, not sure why you need to the the button bands on separate needles? You can just knit them on the same needles as the main cardigan, albeit in a different pattern? If you really think you need separate needles, I would recommend shorter sock needles. Thanks for your interesting podcast. Katrina x

    • @SecretLifeOfASeamstress
      @SecretLifeOfASeamstress  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest I never even questioned it I just followed the pattern. The only reason I can think of that I need to change needle is that the button band and ribbing is usually knit on smaller needles isn't it so would that matter? I'm not sure I'm a novice to this haha... Thank you for watching and for your help x

    • @katrinagordon-james163
      @katrinagordon-james163 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SecretLifeOfASeamstress But if you were to knit the button band on smaller needles, it would then pull up the sides as the gauge will turn out smaller. I am sure that this wouldn’t look too good. (Obviously if the ribbing is at the bottom of a cardigan or sweater, this would be ok, but not in this case. My advice would be to knit everything on the same needles. It’s much easier too.

    • @SecretLifeOfASeamstress
      @SecretLifeOfASeamstress  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@katrinagordon-james163 yes I can see your point, I've knit quite far on now though and there's no way I'm undoing all that lace eek!! I think this time I'll just have to go with it but since a lot of people think it's fine to knit on the same needles I think I'll do that next time. Thank you for your help :) x

    • @sandralewis6440
      @sandralewis6440 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking exactly the same as you Katrina, it seems such a pain unless a different size needle were needed for the button band but I’m sure I would just knit them on the same needles as the body.
      Using a circular needle going back and forth doesn’t count as knitting in the round as you will be purling on the wrong side. Knitting in the round is fabulous, I love it. You are continuously going round and round in circles knitting the right side so no purling (unless your pattern calls for it) so your lace pattern will be written differently, you just use stitch markers so you know where you are in the pattern. Also if it’s knitted top down you can try it on as you go so you get the perfect body and sleeve length for you. Don’t be nervous, I’m sure you’re more than capable from what I’ve seen of the beautiful garments you’ve knitted so far. I just wish I could sew like you 😊

  • @maureencullen1008
    @maureencullen1008 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I loved all your fabric and pattern choices.You always choose beautiful fabrics that really suit you. I was going to buy the patina blouse pattern but I wasn't sure if it would be too low.I'm quite busty but I like tops that cover me.The one you've made looks a perfect height so did you have to alter the pattern or did it naturally sit at this height? For the double end knitting needles(the ones your holding your border on). you can buy various sizes and lengths.You can also buy stoppers for the end of the needles to stop the knitting slipping off.Their not very expensive and you can buy those in different circumferences to fit your needles.If I'm knitting an intricate pattern I always put a stopper on both ends.You do have to remove one each time you get to the border but it's easier than trying to pick up slipped stitches or worse if the row partially unwinds. Would you,please,be able to make a video showing how you block your knitting?.I have been knitting for 58 years,after learning from my mum and gran,and they never blocked knitting so I never have. I don't know if it's my Chromebook but when your talking it's very low but high for the music.Do you or your viewers have any suggestions that could help me? Thanking you. X

    • @SecretLifeOfASeamstress
      @SecretLifeOfASeamstress  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for your help with the knitting needles you've just reminded me that my interchangeable set came with some stoppers so I'll try them. Re the Patina Blouse, I made the standard neckline and it's fine on me but I do always wear some sort of cami underneath just incase. There is the option for a lower neckline if you prefer so if you want it to sit high go for the standard. Yes I could do a video on blocking although I'm by no means an expert and am still learning. I agree, I was taught by my mum and grandparents and nothing was ever blocked I'm not sure if it's a new thing? I'm really not sure what to suggest about the sound I'm hoping someone else might be able to suggest something it must be annoying for you so thank you for still watching xT

    Really enjoying your videos as always!
    For the button band, I've used a 25mm circular needle. Tiny needle part but it doesn't fall off and for me, got in the way a bit less. I smiled at your knitting project, I am making a jumper like that from Drops Design, knit in the round. Glad to hear of your nerves, me too!

    I have the mustard atelier brunette fabric and I absolutely love it, I’m going for a blouse. The McCalls dress does gape. I raised the neckline about an inch, but it still gapes a bit. Having said that it is a lovely pattern and very quick to sew and I am going to make another perhaps raising the neck a bit more or sizing down. I think the Patina would be another good choice. I started knitting in the round less than a year ago and it’s been a game changer. If anything I think it’s easier, you an try on as you go and not to have do all that seaming is wonderful. The sweater pattern is lovely but I did notice that the yoke is big making the underarm quite low on her. That seams to be the trickiest bit knitting in the round stopping at the right place to separate for the sleeves and sometimes when there is a lovely pattern on the yoke the designer wants to finish it even though it makes the sleeve start low down (don’t know if I’ve explained this) I’d recommend the magnolia bloom, really quick to knit and for me it’s a lovely fit.

    I'm at a bit of a loss to understand why the front bands for your cardigan are knitted on a separate needle! How awkward! If I were you I'd just add them to the regular needle and get on with it without the extra fiddliness. Life is too short! I think I'd consider myself an experienced knitter, I've been knitting off and on for around 60 years and have often knitted patterns with an integrated button/buttonhole band and I've never come across one knitted the way your pattern says to. Alternatively use shorter 4" dpns. Clover do some made of bamboo which are grippier than a lot of metal needles. I'd advise you to buy some stitch markers to help you keep track of your lace pattern repeats and yoke increases with the cardigan. Buy the ones that are smooth rings (Clover again!) rather than the ones that are shaped like a curl, those just get caught and snag on things.

      Thank you for your help and comments :) Would it matter that the ribbing is usually knit on a smaller needle? That was the only reason I could think of for the needle change? The pattern does advise that you use stitch markers and they are so helpful, mine are small plastic clips similar to safety pins xx

      @@SecretLifeOfASeamstress I suppose that’s the intention behind it, but when you knit front bands with a smaller needle you generally either knit it up from the bottom and stretch it and stitch it on as you go, or pick up the stitches along the edge and knit them outwards from the long edge. Both of those methods give you stability with either the sewn seam or the picked up stitches adding strength. Knitting the bands with the body is absolutely fine too, but normally just using the same needle you’re using for the main body. Obviously it’s up to you which method you use - the knitting police won’t be arriving at your house any time soon! 😆 But try the smaller dpns, they’ll make life much easier. I love those bulb shaped stitch markers, they’re so useful aren’t they!

      So sorry about the sound issues, I really cannot work out what caused them this time. I've just finished editing my video for this week and everything seems ok but please let me know if you have any issues in the future x
