My uncle planted watermelons and gourds to sell at his roadside stand. We thought we were the most clever kids because we would sneak melons out of his field and open them by dropping them and just ate them. When I grew up and shared that story with him in preparation for my apology, he laughed until he nearly choked. He said he planted in that field so we didn’t have to carry the melons too far away to eat em. Great memory for me. Hope you have a great harvest of everything this year!
Years ago my brother and a friend raided an older neighbor's garden and took a few carrots from his garden. Later in the day the neighbor carrying a box of carrots came to the door. He sat down and told my brother he was welcome to all the carrots he wanted but to please.check with him first because he wanted my brother to have his best carrots and the ones they chose were the small ones. My brother never raided a garden again. That neighbor would drop off boxes of veggies on our front porch all summer.
A neighbor girl kept sneaking bath towels off our clothesline. When I told my mom, she said " if she needs them bad enough to steal them, let her have 'em".
Watching Lacy and Josiah brought tears to my eyes … I remember helping my mother in the kitchen and how much I enjoyed just her teaching me and time spent together I haven't had that thought in years … I lost her in 2017 and still miss her badly , you never realize the NORMAL things and how those memories are so very precious at a later time … GOD BLESS YOU ALL !!! JESUS LOVES EVERY HUMAN CLING TO HIM AND SEEK HIS KINGDOM ….FIRST ...SHALOM.
Mike I didn't get a chance to comment the other day on your video on how to make instant garden beds. I have been gardening for a lot of years and needed to do some new beds this year. I have some health challenges that make it hard for me to move tons of dirt. You showed this old dog some new tricks and thanks to you I will have a garden 2 to 3 X's the size in the past. God bless
Went to the farm co-op and asked what to add to my new garden rows that had hard red clay like yours. he told me to add gypsum and vermiculite. Glad I did. there is a big difference this year between the ones I added them to, and the ones where i ran out and didn't have the money to go get more. Am adding them THIS year to those last 2 rows. Hope this helps YOU out. Love y'all!
One thing I like about your farm is that you are more hands on. I'm not a fan of all kinds of fancy equipment that makes working with the plants impersonal
LOve watching the two of you with your sweet children. They are precious and kind. Mama I enjoyed listening to you talk with Josia as you planted and how patient and encouraging you were with him when he became frustrated getting the plant out of the container. Thank you for your videos and May God bless your family and home.
Happy to see Lacy feeling well and Josiah doing such a great job helping out with planting the water melons. Your concern about your neighbors' tables is what it's all about..loving one another makes us better people. Thanks for those encouraging words, and God bless you.
currently watching old videos and came across this one. I really enjoy the ones with Lacey having a teaching role. she has the knowledge and not only has she taught us but seeing her teach and encourage her son on planting watermelon. I realize that even though she has stepped back from a major role on the videos she is still as busy as ever with homeschooling, food prep and presentation, editing and continuing with farmwork behind the scenes, still miss her sharing her wisdom and just seeing what a nurturing mother she is. it always warms my heart to see her like this. But you can't be everywhere doing everything. Still love and appreciate you.
Wow! I'm a new subscriber from the UK. You are such a blessing and comfort to watch.I feel your heart of kindness. I'm sick but I'm inspired by the energy you bring in your videos. The lessons you teach your children. The way you and your wife work together as a couple teaching and working with your children is such an honour to watch. God bless you and your family❤🙏.
Mike, I am seventy-seven years young and I just want to let you know how much I admire and respect you, Lacey and the boys! You are raising not only food but a crop of young men who will go far in life! My prayers and best wishes to you all. Millie, Vicksburg, Mississippi.
I love watching your family's interaction in the raising food. I fought for and made container planters for our apartment complex. I have paid for everything have lettuce, radishes, carrots, spinach, tomatoes, jalepenos, and potatoes. I will share with all though. Now out of money and 5 tomatoes froze. Lol lesson learned. 🙏🏼🤗🌶🍅🥔🥗

@@evpalfy2464 the plants had only been in the ground for a week. Not fruited out yet. I have starters back in the window. Thank you. I do this for my community. My family are far away.

I took this passed week off so my co-worker (who has a small amount of PTO) didn’t have to use hers up, I return to work tomorrow to see how much work there actually is. I work in the “healthcare” industry and remotely so we are able to still work. I am very thankful for that. I send love and good vibes/prayers to all and cannot wait for things to improve! 💚🌱🌱🌱💜
My son and his wife are planting the watermelons this year for the family and I'm providing the asparagus and green beans. Everyone planting tomato and peppers and potatoes. We can as a family. It cuts down on the work when we all work together.
Hi guys, I can't agree with you more on people facing tough times ahead. I gave a 16" shallow, round planter bowl seeded with multiples of 8 different types of lettuce and some kale to my mailperson since she could barely afford to eat before all this happened. She was so happy she was practically in tears when I gave it to her. She just sent me a picture of it with about 50 sprouts! I have been teaching her all about growing stuff throughout the whole last year since part of my garden is in my front yard. Few things feel better than giving someone food who needs it and setting them up to grow their own is even more gratifying. Please stay safe and healthy! All the best from California 💛
Your homestead is looking so good and producing beautifully! I do look forward to seeing your videos and I may not always comment but I do always watch 😊 lacie you and Mike and the children are a special blessing to us all! We love you and praying for a bountiful harvest on those melons and of course on the rest too! Blessed to be a blessing is what you guys are. I got done squash and cucumbers in my little mini raised garden and now I’m asking for a blessing from our creator God to give an increase so I can share too! Big hugs and much love to you all ... and we all will keep growing
My husband's coworkers are amazed how the different lettuces that I grow and put in our salads actually have different flavors. Like you said the bag stuff has no individual flavors. There's nothing like home grown leaf lettuces! Your rows of the different lettuces and the colors are beautiful.☺🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
I absolutely love your channel, beautiful family. Kids are so helpful and respectful. We have land in NC but haven’t built in it so we aren’t staying there as of yet. It neighbors my husbands grandmother land. We have a garden there and chickens goats about to get some cows and a few pigs. I wish I could be there full time really
ALOT to be thankful for Mike. Thank the Lord, i try to alway be thankful and I thank our Heavenly Father. Think of all the things God give us ... and how hurt God is if don’t tell him how thankful we are.
Thanks for sharing this information with us. I’m now raising 8 ducks and 6 chickens. Getting ready to plant a fall garden. Soon we will not be able to rely on the grocery stores for food. Food is already getting scarce. We don’t eat meat but we do eat eggs, rice, beans, veggies and fruits. We will pray for everyone to get through these trying times.

Your message at the end, made me think. Esp about some of my family, who are unable to continue to work, & must be starting to feel the pressure building...
This is a wake up call to people that they need to figure out how to grow what they need and what better way to start than to just jump in and start. Even if it is to supplement, anything is a awesome start. Our grandparents didn’t have grocery stores, they had pots and pieces of earth that they started to grow food. I was surprised to see people freaking out about not ring able to get ice cream! I was thinking they need to think about need vs. want, and realize they better get busy. Instead of sitting in their chairs and getting depressed, get outside and plans! Investment in today has a payout in weeks to months to come. Great show!
"Food for thought." :) A friend is starting a community produce market soon. We hope to add our extra to the business. Good for everyone and something I think is overdue!! Grow it or purchase from a farmer!
I have been learning how to grow food in the desert. Big learning curve. Most people don't realize that planting the garden also means giving the plants what they need to thrive. For us it is wind and shade and living soil of which we have very little of but little by little we make more compost each year.
Your family has inspired me to put in a small garden to help us out and teach my grandson how to do it. Thank you for your videos. Stay safe and healthy
4 years ago I started a herb garden and I’m so glad I did because It developed over the years in a full suburban homestead! I grow everything including watermelon. I just started my seedlings last week. I just finished putting up my greenhouse today! As you said it’s a true blessing to have a garden of any shape or size. I always wanted a garden as a child growing up. My back yard is huge! I’m so grateful and humbled that I can grow soo much good food! Supermarket veggies do not taste like your own home grown produce. It’s a blessing for sure. Stay safe and keep growing. This season I think we’re going to be feeding others as well with what’s going on in this world now! ☮️🙏🏾
Good morning Mike. Its been a while, but like yourself, we are working full time on our family farm. I am now retired from school and will be a full time FARM WIFE. We are sheltering in place in New Hampshire and grateful to be confined to a 350 acre farm. New calves are due any minute. We are waiting for a warmer day, so we can clean out and increase the size of our gardens. We also are having raised beds built on our new house site. I am excited at the prospect of being able to go out my kitchen door and pick herbs and veggies. The beds require fencing and capping, due to our woods. Deer, crows and other uninvited guests want to eat my gardens! Your homestead is coming along beautifully! I am a bit envious of your lettuce. Good motivation for me. We are growing Red Sail this season. Looking forward to following your channel this spring- Diane
Crazy up here in Michigan Mike. Our favorite organic greenhouse is ‘closed until further notice’. We had GREAT success last year growing a tomato called Tribeca. We have spent hours online looking for nurseries online to ship plants. No luck. Everyone ‘out of stock’ on everything!! We do have a few Brandywines started here with 3 year old seed that germinated! Praise God. Take care my friend. Love and prayers from Michigan.
My hubby lost his job because of the Virus and gas and oil prices...permanent lay off but we are keeping a positive outlook and hoping everything will work out. I hope everyone tries to keep a positive mind set ...stay healthy and much luck to you !
When my brother and i were small , behind my grandparents house, their neighbor had a garden and he would always plant cucumbers and tomatoes that would end up hanging over my grandparents fence. Once they were ripe we would go back their and watch him garden and eat cucumbers and tomatoes. My grandfather asked him about it and said that he had put them there for us and that we could have as much as we wanted. My Grandfather laughed and said 'well rug rats i guess you are even more special than i thought'. that was my very first experience with anyone garden vegetables or anything like that and i now get do have my own at 62.
We have plenty of food. We raise laying hens. We've stopped eating eggs and have been giving them away no charge in our community. If possible even take something you have and stop using it to share it.
Please, please post when the yellow meat water melons are ready. I haven't seen one since I was a child. I'm 62 now so that's been a long time. I'm only a 15 minute drive away n when you said you were planting those, the taste immediately came back to my mouth. Now I'm on the hunt.
Greetings Friends!!!No money = no food and drugs. Concerned about what people are going to do at that point. Really hope this ends this week. We got to get our people back to work. Got to quit depending on government to take care of our basic needs. Your gardens are looking good! The children are really a big help. Have a good week sir!
Hey Fit Family! I hope you are having a good and blessed day! Next time you plant your watermelons 🍉 try training them to grow up on a trellis. I have had much success with this method the last few times I planted watermelon and squash. When they start developing, you need to support them though. I use old netting from onion and potato sacks to hang them up. You can plant your rows closer together (I go 3 feet apart) as they are climbing instead of crawling. Things you can use for a sturdy trellis are: • Cattle panels • Wire mesh for concrete (I forget exactly the name) • T-posts/Rebar and a heavy gage wire. I hope you give it try! God bless you and yours. ❤
My husband is a garbage man and I am an office worker who has been able to work from home. We have been very lucky. I my area we have a program called Matthew 25 that provides people with a raised bed and some seeds to get started on growing their own food. My friend is a single mom with little income who lost one of her jobs. I helped her with seeds, soil and support. Our landfill takes yard waste and composts it, this year they ran out, next year we will take my van and build up her garden beds and use my seeds to create an even better garden for her and her kids.
Seedling growing and hardening off the spring crop that was started by seed. Been eating lettuce and it is so good. Praying for a great garden this year. Tomato seeds planted and some of the pepper seeds ( will continue tonight to finish off seed planted). Need to plant next set of lettuce seeds so they will be a few weeks apart. I told my friend that everyone should grow a victory garden. She said that would be like you going out to eat weekly. I try but sometimes it hard to explain to people that the world is crazy now and the food stores are not where food is grown, Be safe my friends. Bakers Creek Kale is wonderful. God's blessing to you and yours
Hello beautiful family. I love watermelon and my children love it to. I am happy to see you are planning it. Love seeing the hold family out there working together. Take care.
You all are a blessing to us,to watch and learn, the motivational talks are really a added bonus, love to see all the progress yall have done, and look forward to more videos.Sending hugs, love and prayers.
Stacie, you look lovely in your hat. Reminded me of "Anne with an E"! Your hair even looked red under the hat :) Mike I love how your lettuce looks, the homestead as well. My lettuce is coming along nicely in the bus boxes on my deck, looking forward to eating some
I too did not care for watermelon as a child. In my early 20's I decided it was not that bad. My brother (who was not a vegetable person) decided the were pretty good when he went in the Army and that is all they had. No today he makes the absolute best grilled brussel sprouts.I like to at least offer different fruits and vegetables to my children hoping that if they don't like it now hopefully they will later. And the thought of growing my own food brings back childhood memories.
Hopefully there wont be too many ppl out there that are going without and there are more ppl willing to share out... like you said we are built around communities hopefully they stay strong...grow on family...😊
Hi mike and family im from lovely island of Barbados you are inspiration to so many people all over world i have started my homestead garden have cucumbers cantelope honeydew melon watermelon tomATOES KALE BROCOLLI BEETS CARROT SWEET potatoea cassava pumpkin and im now trying my hand at strawberry thank you very much may God keep blessing you you and family
Try letting them 'dry' out a bit before you plant them since you have to 'water them in' AFTER you plant them anyway. That way the container will release the whole thing for you.
I recently read Steve Solomon's latest book and he mentioned that sand will chemically bind with certain clays and perform like cement. I'm interested in how this works for you, and look forward to seeing all the different melon varieties!
I love how you stay positive in a hard time. I like your videos with the family ! Hope you stay safe and can pass this problem we all have right now. Darren from Nova Scotia Canada.
U guys are amazing... Thank you for all you do. You do brighten up our days.... We r old and trying to have a garden this year... In our very rocky yard. God bless you and your family
Keeping it real Mr Mike. You can now reap the benefit of the life choices you made all those years ago. Homesteading on a smaller scale may be the way other survivors of this crisis pick up their life.
Not sure if you heard but Leon from "gardening with Leon" is having a children's vegetable growing contest. I heard about it yesterday. They just need to register,I bet your kiddos can kick some tail! 😊
Gardens are looking nice! Your permaculture orchard is coming right along. Will be following along to see your progression. Thank you for sharing with all of us.
Great job Lacey n Josiah. So glad your headache is gone hun. I'm dreaming of my future homestead but at least where I live gardening is ok. We are building raised beds n archways to grow as much as possible this year. Many blessings sent to you and your family.
I hate this pandemic but it really has been a blessing in a way for many. It has taken a lockdown for people to be able to spend time as a family, grow victory gardens.

You two are a blessing! Thank you for your inspiration. God Bless you and your family.
You have a heart of gold Mike! God Bless you! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
If you end up with a bumper crop of watermelon don't forget to slice and dehydrate for "fruit snacks" over the winter time - yum! :)
What is wrong with folks who thumbs down these videos? What a shame! Don't be a hater, be a grower!
You are good people. God bless you and keep you close.

That is great billy. I like it. SHALOM CHOW
Brother! You're sown earth deep!
I harvested a bunch of my own aquaponic lettuce today, & as this is Florida, it was already starting to bolt.
Just love your channel! Sweet family and great heart!
Glad to see you protecting your skin my dear!
Things you can use for a sturdy trellis are:
• Cattle panels
• Wire mesh for concrete (I forget exactly the name)
• T-posts/Rebar and a heavy gage wire.
I hope you give it try! God bless you and yours. ❤
Thanks for concerns of others and be reminded of how blessed we are!
You need to keep your family fed now. Be kind when your needs are met to share what you can. Farmers are key to a thriving & secure society.
Hello beautiful family. I love watermelon and my children love it to. I am happy to see you are planning it. Love seeing the hold family out there working together. Take care.
Love your family so honest and wholesome. Stay strong and safe in these times. We still have snow so no garden. Hope soon

You should consider mixing in some watercress, a lot of customers hadn't herd of it but loved it when they tried it!
Watercress and rocket (arugular) tastes wonderful mixed In
Stacie, you look lovely in your hat.
Watermelon..oh how I love watermelon...I planted .. Crimson Sweet...Sugar Baby...Star Brites....and Jubilees ..hope we both do good with them..💚🌱💚
Yo, the Sippi. Love Mississippi.

Looking good in the garden.blessings to your family
Great video thanks for sharing with us ❤ my husband a steel hauler truck driver and he hasn't work in almost 2 months due to the virus outbreak, there's alot we lost due to this. ❤
