    The RE-201 Space Echo is a highly-prized classic. Tape warmth, great sounds, reverb on tap, big and beautiful. The RE-202 condenses all of that RE-201 goodness into a retro-shaped package that includes some welcome features not found on the original. Presets for starters. There are four foot-switchable memory slots on board with access to a full 127 slots if you employ a MIDI controller. Reverb types: not just one as found on the original but five different types. You can footswitch on or off your Reverb of choice too. There's a fourth virtual tape head - the original had three. If you want to spice things up you'll find 'Twist' and 'Warp' functions at your service: both foot-switchable. The RE-202 is proper stereo in/out. NEW and AGED virtual tape types are selectable as well as the amount of virtual Wow & Flutter. Saturation can be applied to both the tape and direct signals if desired. Tap tempo is here too. There's a lot to love about the RE-202. I decided that I'll just let the sounds do the talking for this video. Thanks for watching.
    Today's tools:
    Guitar: Fender Strat modded by my friend Mark Emanuelli. It's a '57 RI body with an Eric Johnson neck that's had the nitro removed. The pickups are by Mark.
    Amp: Axe-FX III MKII running Cygnus FW 19.06 - 2 x Fender Princeton Reverb models panned left and right. RE-202 is inserted into the front of the amps. No other effects except for the RE-202 were used in this video.
    Power Supply: Eventide PowerMax by Cioks
    Camera: iPhone 11 Pro and Canon D60
    Soundcard: PreSonus Quantum & Fractal Audio Systems Axe-FX III MKII (guitar, mixing and bouncing).
    Desktop Monitors: PreSonus R80 R-Series Active AMT Studio Monitors (www.presonus.com)
    Computer: 2017 Apple iMac Pro, 2.5 GHz 14-Core Intel Xeon W, 64 GB 2666 MHz DDR4, Radeon Pro Vega 64X 16 GB
    Software: Logic Pro X, Apple Final Cut Pro X, Compressor.

    Tasty playing! Nice to hear someone who plays WITH the delay rather than just fiddling with delay

    There's a reissue? I'm about to go look up the price after I finish watching Brett play the film track off some 80s movies. This thing sounds bloody good to my ears.
    Edit: Roland, if you're reading this to see how your investment in Brett's demo went, feel free to give him more demos, I just bought one of these yesterday based on this review.

    I was hoping you'd get your hands on the bigger one! The layout seems more intuitive than the compact pedal which is great in itself but the extra options here are good to have.

    Real pretty jams bruv. Spookin me right out. Very cool toy indeed. Dunno if I could ever justify owning such a thing or if I'd be able to maximise its capabilities in an artistic way, which is always the issue with such toys.
    You sir definitely extracted some amazing sounds from it and showed its capabilities in an artistic way.

  • @slimsantilli4476

    Guitarist like myself that jam alone in the TV room. They tend to try to make a tone that sounds like the whole band. So a treble soaked tone sounds bad to them. But in a mix, it's on point.

    Difficult to compare with an original unit which, other than reliability issues, was not constructed consistently. So, especially once wear and tear is factored in, this modern digital recreation will not sound the same as a tape-echo unit constructed a quarter-of-a-century or more ago ago. It still has the essence of the RE-201 and would be perfect for someone who wants that feel without all the technical grief of a tape machine. It's like the digital Echorec simulations. Certainly the original sounds a bit better but would anyone but a top-line professional with spare machines and a couple of expert techs want to use one out live?

    Great video Brett. Love your channel man. Finally got my RE-202 and thought I'd just share this. I really wanted to be able to use the reverb by itself, which you can do, but only if you turn the echo volume down MANUALLY. My hope was that when I switch off the delay, the reverb could still be on regardless of echo volume or any other settings. I'm sure there is some sort of hack by using the presets or something but this is disappointing as I always leave reverb on. If anyone has a solid workaround, let me know!

    • @earthspiritsong
      @earthspiritsong 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that tip. Yeah, I jumped in and made the purchase. I have to wait since it is on backorder where I am. But, I am super excited. Let us know if you happen upon a workaround. I almost never fly without reverb also.

    • @earthspiritsong
      @earthspiritsong 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The manual says: The [REVERB VOL] knob adjusts the volume of the reverb. If the [ECHO VOL] knob is turned all the way counterclockwise, you can use only reverb. Maybe just assign the echo volume to an expression pedal?

    This just sounds way brighter than a space echo and misses the character of the unit. Anyone who is raving about this pedal I suspect isn't really familiar with the original unit.

    • @softlightsymphonyband
      @softlightsymphonyband 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The majority of people don’t have the cash to drop on a rare and expensive vintage unit so of course they haven’t. The treble could also have been rolled back to make it darker.

    • @Eggsisreallychicken
      @Eggsisreallychicken 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Brightness is easy to take care of from the unit itself. No one thinks this is 1-1 with actual tape, just that it sounds great for many peoples purposes. Get an Echofix if you want to pay top dollar for a real new tape echo! I don’t think everyone is stupid and delusional for liking this pedal!

    • @gapping3000
      @gapping3000 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Eggsisreallychicken Personally I would advise people to just buy the old RE-20 version. Sounds great and closer to the original. This unit to my ears is something different to the classic Space Echo sound. Not a bad sound, just not a space echo

      @Eggsisreallychicken 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gapping3000 I've heard the re-20 and I think it sounds fine but also digital and tinny in a lot of cases. This one sounds better, less digital artifacts, to my ears.

      @@Eggsisreallychicken I'll concede the digital artefacts are there on the RE-20. The original re-201 sounds tinny sometimes as well, especially the reverb tank. I think this is a fine pedal and I wouldn't say it's a bad sound. Just it's not really a "Space Echo"
