I do agree with you that cheating is the kind of offense that teachers can easily handle on their own by giving the student a 0. Many schools and colleges require teachers and professors to report cheating incidents to administrators. There's a lot of colleges out there where cheating is the kind of offense where professors are required to report to deans, student conduct administrators, etc. There's many public schools out there where teachers are required to report cheating incidents to principals.
Back when I was in school a kid in our class had major ADD, he would always get in trouble over the dumbest things like tapping his pencil. He would react very emotionally like it was the end of the world if he was going to get another call home and everyone made fun of him, what we didn't know was at the time he was getting physically abused anytime he got in trouble. If a student reacts like this it should be a major red flag that something larger than the issue at hand is going on.

...Yes, thank you, I do realize that now. I was fifteen and this was my first relationship, or crush. It was never really a relationship. Sometimes you never fully know the person you have a crush on. I'm incredibly thankful that crush went nowhere because it led me to the man of my dreams whom I am marrying very soon.
Wait a minute...you said you were 15 when you posted the first comment and then a year later you said you were getting married to the “man of your dreams.” Does that mean you were getting married at 16? I mean congrats but I’m just a little confused.
Can't the principal tell that clearly some type of abuse is happening at home? If a teenage boy is that visibly upset over getting a call home, clearly mother flipping out is beyond a typical situation. He should have notified Child Protective Services. Also, I would not have called his mother. It makes sense that my young 7 and 8 year old second graders cry when I call their parents. It does not make sense for a teenage boy to be crying like that unless something is clearly wrong.
You cannot be that stupid. He literally said he cried to get sympathy. Not to mention in today's day and age we have teens who cry over getting their Xbox taken away. Tears from a teen over stupid shit does not equate to abuse at home. Not even close.
Wtf are you on? When I was in high school I had my parents called a couple of times, and I cried because I didn't want them to be disappointed in me. SOME people the most about emotional consequences. I happen to have Asperger's, but still, the point stands. Where the hell did you pull of your bs from o.O
I agree with you. Cheating on tests is the kind of issue that's best handled in the classroom instead of sending the student to the office. A teacher giving a student a 0 on the test is a better way of handling a cheating situation than sending the students to the office. Many teachers write office referrals for cheating since many schools require cheating incidents to be reported to administrators, and a lot of colleges have rules where cheating incidents have to be reported to academic deans, student conduct administrators, etc.
These adults says "It's not that bad. It's just a call home".. Well, do they even remember what it's like to get yelled at by their parents, or to get a tremendous punishment from them? Apparently not. They need to re experience being a teen to know how it really feels dealing with their parents about getting calls from the principal.
