A shame there was no narration. It's about time their was a sleeper service from Fort William / Inverness to Penzance, calling at Exeter, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Even if it only ran twice weekly, it would be an experience to leisurely travel the length of the Country.
Don't need any narration. It's better without it. As for sleeper services from Fort William and Inverness to Penzance, it should be every night 🌙 just like London.
It's THE GHOST TRAIN! Well that's what I like to call it... When you board at Crewe as I have done a couple of times you're aware that the train is likely to be full, but unless you go to the lounge car you don't see anyone! Looking forward to my next time aboard; I'm glad the rolling stock is being renewed (not sure whether it's operational on the Highland services yet) for the long-term survival of the service, but I will miss the ability to open a door window and get a breath of highland air + watch the 'humpin' n shuntin' @ Waverley in the middle of the night - and also to be able to listen to the music of a Class 73! Oh well, I guess that's progress. #RomanceLost ?? Great video - thanks for the memories :)
Excellent video with a lot of useful information. Thank you for posting it. What video camera did you use -exceptional clarity and very little shaking. Your night footage was the best that I have seen of the videos taken on this train by anyone.
MR TRUCULENT SAYS !!!! You used to be able to board a sleeping carriage at Carlisle at 10:00pm. When the Caledonian Sleeper arrived at Carlisle in the early hours of the morning about 2:00am your sleeping carriage would be shunted onto the back of the train. So you could go to bed at a reasonable time and be woken at Euston London at 6:00 am. Now you have to wait on Carlisle railway station platform until the train arrives at 2:00 am and board it then . It is such a pity that they changed to this.
Im quite a fussy eater so only ever had the macaroni and cheese, but that was nice! I also enjoyed the alcohol in the lounge car (without being silly) and theres a good selection especially for a train trip! 100% reccomended! Go enjoy it :)
The "Highlander" and the "Lowlander" Sleeper services have different food offers in the Lounge Car, the former being more extensive than the latter. The menus and price lists can be downloaded from the Caledonian Sleeper web site. When I travelled up to Edinburgh on the Lowlander Sleeper a fortnight ago I had Celeriac and Truffle Soup with Crusty Bread (£4.50) followed by Haggis, Neeps and Tatties (£9.00) followed by a Scottish Cheese Board with Crackers and Grapes (£9.45) with a half-bottle of red Beronia wine from Rioja in Spain. I finished off with a wee dram of Balvenie Doublewood single malt Whisky for £6.70. So the onboard food and drink are okay, but nothing really special.
It's the haggis, neeps and tatties for me! Wait until the new rolling stock is brought into service as the old stock is dire! The staff are wonderful, very helpful (I'm handicapped) and so kind!
I slept well thank you, but as a rail enthusiast found my excitement made me not want to sleep and also woke up now and then to investigate where i was and what was going on, all in all i couldnt reccomend the journey any more, its one of the coolest rail journeys i have ever experienced
@@DaveSuperThomas Indeed - my mother died last Christmas and I went down south and back up again to Aberdeen on the old trains. Couldn't get warm until about 2 am each time.
The single two-pin socket in each cabin, intended for powering an electric razor, has been replaced by four USB sockets. There are 3-pin 240 Volt electric power sockets in the Lounge Car.
Usually a class 73, but is dependant on avalibility, if travelling to Inverness i believe its a class 67 but im not 100% sure, but that also is dependant on avalibility
@@briejubridgianah6308 - The Inverness portion of the combined Highland Sleeper train is Load Eight (six Sleepers plus Lounge Car plus Seated Carriage) and the Main Line to Inverness is very hilly, so two Class 73 locomotives, working in multiple, are often used on this route.
Still seems strange seeing a class 73 in Scotland (albeit rebuilt)... I remember them on southern region in the 60's. But better to see 50 year old British built traction than imported sheds :-)
You have a wonderful imagination! I've used this train often and it looks like any other station to me - and such a long train. My sister came up to Aberdeen yesterday and said to staff on the Euston platform '''Are we walking all the way to Scotland?'' which was met with a snooty sniff!
What to expect ? Well this is the UK railway so expect extortionately high cost, delays and cancellations... Go and watch some of the videos on youtube showing the Japanese sleeper services, note the cost/distance and you will see how shockingly bad our services are.
Im in complete agreeance with you, but one thing to consider was at the time of producing this video, the price of that sleeper service was actually quite respectable, hopefully this information is useful to you regardless of it being now outdated
I checked it, depends on where you get off of course, but there is definitely a huge difference if you just get a seat or if you want a solo bedroom. You can go for as cheap as £50
It looks very much like the house/setting, named Skyfall, where the climax of the movie of the same name takes place. I didnt know if that was actually it just poking up over the horizon?
Would love to send some poor sap by car departing outside the euston concourse at the same time to see what time they would arrive in Inverness.....train would probably hit Rugby before the car hit the start of the M1.
Thanks for posting this amazing video!
Thank you :) im glad you enjoyed
All aboard the night train ..fantastic !
The Highlands are beautiful!
What a pity you didn't arrive on platform 9 and a half!

You know, i never even knew this, surely thats not a permanent thing,
The title is misleading, the Highland line is the Inverness line. this is the WEST Highland line.
Not everyone has crippling anoraksia though.
Great vid, I’m seriously considering doing the trip. Is the food and drink onboard nice?

Why does this train take 9 hours and the Virgin trains only 4?

That platform at London-Euston Station looks positively scary. It looks like a freight dock rather than a passenger platform.

A "sink" in each cabin? It looked more like a wash basin to me!
Same difference?

anything i could change to possibly make it better?
I want to see what it's like inside the train
I felt i covered that also, but let me know if theres anything you feel i missed :)
