    OK. It's all yours and Paul Sellers fault. I got interested in carving when I experienced the difference between a sharp chisel and a dull one after watching Paul sharpen one and I tried it. Much different experience. Then I saw you carve a leaf. I was hooked. I forked over a few hundred for some Pfeil gouges after getting a set of Sorby chisels that were wonderful thus making me aware of the dramatic difference in quality tools. I got the Pfeils a few days ago and - wow! They float through the white pine I have with almost no effort at all. Even dealing with the grain is easier. The fine control they give is beyond belief until you experience it. Let's just say the chips will be flying in the days to come! I'm already starting to "feel" them work literally. As a musician all my life, there is a feel that you must have between you and your instrument, and I'm now seeing that there is that same feel that you develop between you, your tool and the wood. Thanks for inspiring me to jump off the deep end! I will always play music, but being retired from traveling and performing now gives me more time to pursue my new love! Even have a youtube channel now for my "adventures"!

    Thank You Mary! Another video was bragging on you and now I see why. A friend of mine had their father pass away and they offered me 1st choice to buy his wood carving tools. I currently power carve but a want more detail, so knife carving is my next step.

    I've been a carpenter since 1988. I've carved little things out with a pocket knife since I can remember. So, at 55 I'm just getting into serious woodcarving. There's always something else to learn.

    A brilliant video that explained heck of a lot to someone as new as myself.

    Based on your comments, today I ordered Phiel #3 6mm gouge. I’ve had a poor experience with Beaver Craft gouges, just terrible. So I’m guessing one gets what they pay for.

    Hi Mary, I have been searching all over to learn how to sharpen an incannel gouge. I have two Henry Taylor gouges that you sharpen on the inside curve. I'm just not sure the best way to go about sharpening them. Any advice?

    Your videos are wonderful and very helpful! I'm just starting out wood carving and my biggest issue I have run into is discovering which tools are essential for a good starter kit. Which would you say are best? And are you originally from Ireland? I can hear it in your t's and r's.:)

  • @confiscator
    @confiscator 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey, Mary. I'd love to know how you clean your handles. My Pfeils get kind of tacky after working them for a while, but I'm not sure what I can use on them safely.
    Great video!

    • @marymay155
      @marymay155  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +confiscator I haven't had that issue, but I would assume just wiping them down with water and a mild detergent would remove oils, etc. Pfeil gouges are well sealed, so this should not damage the handles.

  • @waya1056
    @waya1056 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    so, do you have a list of those 10-15 tools? I have some less expensive, but have bought a few Pfeil's and love those. Have gotten away from carving for a little while. Now retired and want to get back in to keep myself busy and productive.

    great video, PS: at 8:14 the 'syndrome' you are describing is called 'G.A.S', not the stuff you elude after a hot curry, or what goes into an automobile engine, but an achronym standing for Gear_Aquisition_Syndrome this is HARMLESS, not fatal, other than to ones wallet, it is the collectors bug in another sence, the hankering one posesses for tools, or accessories for ones hobby, no matter what it is, sewing, cameras (photography), machining, Cosplay, shoes, and so it goes on.

    I have a question for you, because I couldn't find the answer online. I can't find the 6 mm 60 degree v chisel, just the 3 mm and the 12 mm ones. Which one do you reccomend for a starter kit? I also found a 6mm 100(or 90) degree v chisel. Isn't this one good? Thanks!

    • @marymay155
      @marymay155  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Preil (Swiss Made) has a 6mm (they call is a #12), and also Stubai. The 60 degree is better for general uses. The 90 degree is too open. The 12 is definitely too big for smaller work, and the 3mm can be used for small details.
