Michael McKean (Chuck) is actually a great musician.. and probably best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the parody rock band Spinal Tap. He also used to sing and play guitar on Laverne & Shirley.
Well that answers that. He has a great voice!
I love this episode, jimmy and chuck singing is one of my fav scenes. love the reactions!!!!
Thank you!
I think you were looking away when Chuck grabbed the mic. I think that showed early on how Chuck was irritated and embarrassed by Jimmy and just removed Jimmy from the stage... And Jimmy stood back beaming proudly... That whole opening was heartbreaking.
Absolutely heartbreaking.
"And someone way down here .... loses someone dear"
Jimmy and Chuck cared deeply for each other, but both carried resentment and are determined to push each other away by pretending otherwise. Chuck's last words are calculated to inflict hurt (we all know the opposite of love is indifference), and in retaliation Jimmy represses any grief and disavows Chuck's living memory in testimony. The McGill's choose their words with intent - we the audience know this much. This to me is the clear read from what has been shown. Families/people may love one another and go to any length to avoid communicating it directly, even to themselves - it's pretty much why the genre of drama exists.
Couldn't have said it better myself!
Masterpiece. It is the birth of Saul Goodman, everyone gets deceived. The relationship between Mike and Werner was great on its on. It's truly amazing how these writers have done such amazing job of character development in a prequel to one of the best show of all time.
Great reaction!
Thanks!
I kinda think Jimmy and Mike were in sort of parallel tracks here. They each got dealt the last straw, the final blow. Jimmy responds by embracing Saul Goodman and having no regrets. You know how Mike responds... It is all tragic.
Good way to put it. I think this was probably one of the most tragic episodes I've watched so far. My goodness that was tough.
Jimmy became who he became in the end because his brother betrayed him. Such things can be insurmountable. Yes, brothers should have deep, forgiving relationships, but Chuck was unable to move beyond his ego, even for his own brother, destroying his ambitions, thus destroying everything Jimmy thought was good in the world. I completely understand this character. Many families are completely messed up, which only hurts more.
jimmy was always going to be slippin, the show makes it pretty clear it was like an addiction. sure there's a chance he'd overcome that addiction with support of his bro, and chuck's handling of the whole situation wasn't great. but jimmy is ultimately responsible for his own actions and how he chose to respond to chuck.. jimmy's faults really can't all be thrown on chuck
I agree to a point, but I still keep thinking Chuck didn't actually mean what he said to Jimmy. I think he broke Jimmy's heart because he knew he was going to kill himself and he wanted to make it easier for Jimmy to move on. I could be totally wrong, but I don't believe Chuck never cared for Jimmy.
My karaoke song is Electric Light Orchestra's "Sweet Talkin' Woman". Though, I may be switching to their song "All Over the World" next time I get a chance.
Oh, and, this is on the top 3 favorite episodes for me.
Nice song choice! I think this is definitely a top for me too, even though it killed me. =[
