Too many plants! Tidying the greenhouse and talking succulents

  • The succulent and cactus greenhouse is full to the brim, and there's hundreds of seedlings that need to come out here in spring. Look's like it's time for a tidy up -- come along as I clear out some plants, kill a few, and talk everything succulents and cacti along the way.
    There's some interesting Trichocereus plants, a random aside about grafting cacti, a Rauhocereus riosaniensis treated for an infection, the rediscovery of some oddly discarded caudex plants, a bunch of flowering Euphorbias, a stately old Fockea edulis, an unceremonious binning of a Euphorbia lactea crest, and several other curiosities.

    Its crazy seeing your bin filled with plants I'd love to attempt to save. Caring for them and then seeing them survive and outgrow injuries is what brings me the most joy about growing succulents! Whats your favourite thing about succulents? Cheers from Albury!

    • @AridZine
      @AridZine  29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Don’t worry - the bin was mostly just full of hedge clippings! There’s a few very very diseased Trichocereus in there that really just needed to go, mostly for the sake of my other plants. The Euphorbia crest I actually managed to salvage a small piece the day after I shot this - very small, maybe 7cm, but there is still hope for it!
      As for favourite thing about succulents… just how strange and weird they can look! Yours?
      Cheers, thanks for watching!

    Loved hearing about the origin story of your golden barrel! I have a few similar stories as well with seeds haha
    I’m wondering if the webbing on your cristata could be from a spider mite infestation instead of ordinary spiders. It could also be the cause of the damage 🤔 If that’s the case, 70% rubbing alcohol works well on them when sprayed every other day.
    Take care!

    • @AridZine
      @AridZine  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! It’s definitely just spiders causing the webbing, I’ve seen them scampering about when I water. That said, the scars could be caused by mites, although I don’t typically see typical spider mites in my greenhouse - I get different mites though called false spider mites. Don’t produce webs but do make damaged plants! Usually only get into the stressed or damaged plants.

    It was a shame to see your Pseudolithos turn to mush but I remember that was a common problem with stapeliads. I'd have something like an Edithcolea grandis about to flower & I'd come out in the morning to find a pile of jelly. Disheartening but we persevere.

    • @AridZine
      @AridZine  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Indeed! I’ve got many Pseudolithos seedlings so the loss of this one was no big deal… but when you grow plants, losses are always inevitable. An important part of the learning process.

    Traditionally no such thing as too many plants, but reality does strike occasionally. I see in the early pan your Operculicarya decaryi (?) is growing well, mine is so slow growing. What is in the rust fungus spray? Oooh you “proplifted” that golden barrel seed pod…no judgement, just envy. 🤣 Like hortlust over that Adenium socotranum, just wonderful. That plant you hacked up, could you cut off the top, clean and repot it and see what comes up from the remaining main stem? I’m pretty poor so seeing your garbage can/bin caused agita, geez so much stuff to possibly play with…sorry this is long last question - what is the plant top shelf under the mask, tight layers of colors and green leaves on top? Enjoyed this, thanks! 🌵😊

    • @AridZine
      @AridZine  29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hmmm… I don’t actually have an Operculicarya decaryi, so I wonder what it is that you’ve noticed there?
      The rust spray is a product called Rose Shield. The active ingredient is called Myclobutanil.
      I might have been able to do that, but the whole plant was pretty diseased in the end. After this video I did manage to find a small, clean chunk that I’ve set aside to try to regrow, though. About 6 or 7 cm across.
      Most of the garbage can is full of hedge trimmings… just the stuff at the top - some very very diseased Trichocereus plants that really needed to go.
      As for the plant on the top shelf… had a look but wasn’t quite sure which plant you were referring to 😅

      @@AridZine hi thanks for the answers! The couple of plants I noticed in the moving scan were thin woody branches off maybe a caudex with tiny leaves. I got a small Operculicarya decaryi from a grower last year, I love it. I’m just learning it seasonal growth, it’s summer here ( east central NJ/USA) and its doing well in an east window. 🌱 Ok I feel better about the stuff you bin now, yes diseased things really need to be chucked out! 🌱oh and after I rewatched the video I think what I saw on the top shelf that you had already mentioned earlier is a Euphorbia bupleurifolia, very cool plant. I’d never seen one, they run about $20 online, Amazon has a E. Pachypodioides that has red flowers for $13 that looks nice too. 🌱I love seeing the unusual plants you have, I didn’t realize how interesting Euphorbia can be, geez. It amazes me how one can be fascinated by plants ( and insects and rocks) all their life and still learn new things, so thank you! 🌱 Judi

    • @AridZine
      @AridZine  หลายเดือนก่อน

      They’re lovely birds and make beautiful warbly song - don’t get among my plants at all though. All the pollinating that happens around here is done either by paintbrush or by bees and hoverflies.

    • @AridZine
      @AridZine  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not 100% sure - maybe someone else can chime in - but I think it can often be associated with under-potting. Less corking if they have adequate root room. Could be way off the mark though.!

    Are you throwing away those Trichocereus spp? In hope the taxonomy hasn't changed when I failed to notice.
    Or eating them? You no doubt know, if it were one of the sacred variations in species, that a bit of sodium hydroxide, hydrocarbon solvent, distilled water and sulphuric acid, with a bit of vacuum filtration and separation funnel, could make eating most of the plant unnecessary.

    • @AridZine
      @AridZine  28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Haha I’m not eating them - they’re riddled with pathogens. Was using them for rootstock but they’d just infect whatever I grafted to them so time for them to go.

    For the cacti that you sprayed with the fungicide, would propagating it still be a viable option? Or is fungus stuff one of those issues that kinda wrecks the plant? Can you cut it out like rot (I'm not sure if that's even the proper way to deal with rot on cacti)?

    • @AridZine
      @AridZine  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You could propagate it, definitely. In this case it’s so superficial though that it’s probably best to just spray. You could cut it off too… but not worth the scarring in my opinion.
