unlike with Hill and VGK, I will not be upset if Blackwood and Colorado go all the way and win the cup this season, I hope his career continues to take off from here
Grier just had an interview with Sheng about the trade were he mentioned only two goalies have gone for second round picks mid-season: Fleury and Lehner who both have Vezina seasons beforehand. So a second and prospect for Blackwood is a great return in relation to other goalie trades
Awesome video. All i needed in a few minutes. Excited for Kovalenko and eventually Askarov next year. Makes sense to let him help Barracuda. Keep it up Prof 🤘🏼
I'm just appreciating this brief moment in time where the forward group was playing very well as a team and to a man, individually. Hope it continues, but you never know!
Great video. Was pretty surprised by the general reaction of some Sharks fans I follow on twitter. I expect him to ship out as many pending UDFAs as he can to recoup assets. Granlund, Ceci, Sturm, Kunin, Rutta... whoever he can. And he should. Longest view in the room.
Seems like reasonable return, a 1st was a lot to expect so 2nd + a prospect meets what I was hoping for. Interested to see what this means for the sharks future as they have so many young forwards we want to see get a chance eventually. Hoping that the sharks continue to sell of pieces throughout the year and we get extended looks at all of Kovalenko, Gushchin, Cardwell, Bordeleau, and Graf throughout the season. I also just feel like Askarov is ready for the NHL, I'm fine with him bouncing up and down this year and helping the Cuda make the playoffs and then of course being the starter there once they do, but I also think they should continue bringing up askarov for a spot start here and there even if both goalies are healthy. Like if someone goes on IR and a roster spot opens up, just call up Askarov for a game and carry 3 goalies for a day or two, and then send Askarov back down and bring up an actual skater as a replacement once the sharks go on a road trip. I hope the Sharks aren't going to prioritize rehabilitating Georgiev's value as an asset so they can flip him for a 5th at the deadline, asset management is all well and good, and I think Grier is quite good at it, but sometimes player development has to take priority.
I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see Askarov come up for a few games here or there, same with many of those other players you mentioned. Hopefully the Sharks do open things up a bit later in the season.
Thanks Professor! Not sure how i feel about this. Askarov and Blackwood would have made a great tandam. Hope Blackwood comes back next year. Don't mind SJ losing more games this year to get a higher draft pick next year.
I just read Grier’s post trade interview, seems like him and Blackwood’s agent were far apart in contract talks. I guess it depends on how he finishes the year with Colorado, but it doesn’t seem like he will be back at this point :(
as an avs fan. Georgiev was great for us two years ago but since than it wen't downhill. he was one of the reasons we didn't win division last season but he played pretty good in the play off. but his weaknesses showed in the second round where he lost head to head battle with oettinger. but he still hold his own. this season he totally fell apart and every shot on goal gave me anxiety attacks lol but I believe with less pressure he can start to play out of his mind. with avs it was like 4 goals on 7 shots in the first and then we had to play from behind rest of the game lol also avs don't let on a lot of shots so he often ended up with like 22 saves on 26 shots or something like that. about kovalenko he has great upside and potential to be top 6 forward but his defensive play is sus on NHL level. he didn't play PP or PK for us. I feel sharks give him room for development and I really feel he could become something for you like val nichuskin became for us. I am really pumped up about blackwood it feels like we are back as contenders. But we will see how he deals with pressure and much less volume during games. but I think veteran presence of wedgewood will help him out. Wedgewood had basically 2 shutouts (came to the net at the end of first period when georgiev let 4 goals in and we turned it around from 0:4 to 5:4) and 4 strong performances (he was sub 90 against canes but kept us in the game something georgiev could never do) since he came here from predators and he had like .87 for the preds lol
Maybe Nabby thinks he can fix G. Blackwood was a huge question mark coming in cheap, leaves solid gaining a larger return. Sharks can be goalie flippers.
I’m torn! I know it’s a good move, and I know it’s a good return, but I’m still just viscerally disappointed. Also I’m happy for Blackwood… but I was have so much fun this season and I fear that could be over now 😰
Yeah I don’t think Georgiev will be bailing them out as much as Blackwood was, we shall see how the players respond to this. It might be a little deflating to have your very good goalie get moved to bring someone in who’s been as bad as Georgiev has.
I think Georgiev is going to bring up his play a bit. Having the pressure of pretty much being the sole reason your team isnt clearing .500 consistently off your shoulders must be huge for a player, especially a goalie.
Hey Professor, I am sorry to see Mackenzie go. He was a good Shark. Who knows what his future is and I wish him much success. I am glad to see Giovanni go as well. He really never impressed me much. I suppose he is a rugged fighter but, he rarely fought so why have him when he can't really contribute otherwise? I think the real meat of the trade is the 2nd rounder. Kovalenko who knows? He was a late round pick but, who knows? Pete Clovis, CA
I hate seeing him go. He’s been the best goalie we’ve had in a long time, despite the scoreboard and the sharks record. He has played exceptionally well in my opinion, consistently putting up 40+ saves. I don’t necessarily see the upsides that the internet has been talking about, but I am not as well versed as some. I hope Blackwood gets his chance at a cup
I think the idea here is that Askarov is the starting goalie of the future, and Blackwood has played so well this year that the Sharks would have to offer him a lot of money and term to keep him around. Realistically, he will end up signing elsewhere for a true starter role for next season. Therefore, just keeping him the rest of this year when the Sharks are very unlikely to make the playoffs anyway is unnecessary.
I’m sad to see Blackwood go but If Kovalenko can become a solid third liner that would be a pretty great deal. Who knows maybe Gerogiev has a bit of a bounce back. Wasn’t too long ago we were having the same type of discussion about Blackwood.
kovi is already a solid third liner. he very well could become a second line talent. im sure he will get that shot on the sharks. im one of those avs fans that is sad to see him go, but the situation in net was not working. luckily ivan ivan and Prishchepov took some solid steps forward this year so he wont be missed as dearly.
I'm thankful for this signal that I won't be having to watch nearly as many games this season and can just look forward to the top 3 pick in next year's draft. Good riddance to Blackwood, hockey culture loves to talk up each other as "good guys" but a good person doesn't go out of his way to needlessly expose his coworkers to a novel virus as he did in 2020.
I have mixed feeling about this. It is not a bad return. Hope that Georgiev somewhat bounces back. But I do not like selling anything that is valuable. Granted who knows if Blackwood would have stayed. I feel that there should be need to build a team and not just gather futures. This is sort of building losing culture. Sharks has been on downswing for while and hit the bottom. There is no reason to dig deeper. We have seen how hard it can be to climb up from there in Capspace era. Look how many years it take Oilers to become competitive. Look at Red Wings, Senators.. heck Sabres. It can take decade to climb up if you just gather futures.
I do understand the perspective here, which is why Grier made moves like trading for Liljegren and signing Toffoli. So if the Sharks didn’t have Askarov, there is no way they would have traded Blackwood. But if you already have a young stud goalie prospect waiting in the wings, you don’t really need another really good one who will be expensive.
Kunin has honestly been looking very solid and from what I've heard is a huge piece of the locker room. It's hard to imagine getting any real value out of a Kunin trade, so I think it makes the most sense to just keep him.
@@krishgangal8490 I seriously doubt he gets re-signed, and you need room for younger players to get ice time. Maybe they keep him, but doesn't make much sense imo.
That’s the hope is that some of these guys like Kovalenko, Cardwell, Bystedt, Graf, etc end up replacing some of the old dogs in the bottom 6. (Although the Sharks are probably stuck with Goodrow until his contract ends)
A 1st is a lot more valuable then a 2nd, so the people expecting a 1st I think were a little bit too ambitious. All of what we got from colorado while only giving up a 5th, a 6th and a 4th liner sounds pretty good to me
Blackwood didn't deserve this team last year. I hope he goes deep with Colorado (if he can lock in during the playoffs). Meanwhile, Kovalenko can slot in on our third/fourth line and gives us the option to either move him or someone like Grundstrom in the future. Overall, a sad trade, but a good one.
Perhaps the Sharks could have waited longer, and ended up with a better deal, however there are risks to that. Blackwood has performed very well so far this season, but who’s to say he doesn’t go on a cold streak soon, especially behind that Sharks defence? For Colorado, I mentioned how Georgiev has been a good goalie in past seasons, who’s to say he doesn’t turn things around soon? Basically waiting longer would be a high risk vs high reward situation, and it seems Grier did not want to take that chance when a pretty good deal was there for the taking.
Avs needed a good goalie + a 4th line enforcer, Sharks needed a .874 goalie + a Matt Nieto clone, and a great pick since we all know MacKinnon, Makar, Rantanen and the others are all awful and gonna lose 35 maybe 40 games straight so it will be a top 2nd round pick in the end, great deal!
Hate this trade return with a passion. Cap strapped team with the worst goalie in the league who will miss the playoffs if he remains on the roster, another situation GMS DREAM about to fleece teams (like Edmonton w/ Ceci) and once again Grier drops the ball. What does he think that being the captn save a hoe to other GMs that are handcuffed accomplishes? It accomplishes NOTHING by taking lackluster returns from teams that NEED these roster moves to remain competitive. Colorado wins this trade by a landslide.
unlike with Hill and VGK, I will not be upset if Blackwood and Colorado go all the way and win the cup this season, I hope his career continues to take off from here
Perfectly said!
Meh he's an anti-vaxxer so maybe not the worst person in the world but still a scumbag
GMMG absolutely fleeced here. Turning Blackwood into a 2nd rounder, potentially a 4th rounder and a middle 6 winger is huge
Was ready for this one professor always look forward to your vids
My Schaefer/Martone dream is alive again.
Lets keep it going lol
Grier just had an interview with Sheng about the trade were he mentioned only two goalies have gone for second round picks mid-season: Fleury and Lehner who both have Vezina seasons beforehand. So a second and prospect for Blackwood is a great return in relation to other goalie trades
Yeah, I think taking back Georgiev helped bump value up, since Georgiev has negative value.
Awesome video. All i needed in a few minutes. Excited for Kovalenko and eventually Askarov next year. Makes sense to let him help Barracuda. Keep it up Prof 🤘🏼
15% of his even strength time is a wild stat to find professor! I like it

Definitely a fair trade, super excited for Kovalenko

You’ll like Blackwood, he was a little inconsistent at times, can let in some bad goals, but he can also bail you out a lot. Very athletic goalie
Maybe Nabby thinks he can fix G. Blackwood was a huge question mark coming in cheap, leaves solid gaining a larger return. Sharks can be goalie flippers.
That’s a good point, hopefully Georgiev can rebound.

@ all things that are probably true, and sound good when written out as such. I just don’t have the acumen to see that at face value myself

Good luck sharks.
I guess I will be rooting for Colorado this year
They could be our playoff team, unless Granlund gets traded somewhere…

Much better than jd
The Avs have some WOOD.
Scott Wedgwood
Mackenzie Blackwood
Miles Wood
Wood you look at that, I woodn’t bet against them in a playoff series, wood you?
Hopefully Sturm or kunin are the next moves
Probably not as early as this one got done, but maybe once the deadline gets closer, I could see at least Sturm being traded.
@professorhockey you're more than likely right, but like you touched upon they have a log jam, especially since they like cardwell so much too
Kunin has honestly been looking very solid and from what I've heard is a huge piece of the locker room. It's hard to imagine getting any real value out of a Kunin trade, so I think it makes the most sense to just keep him.
