I do not EVER want to see again how this is "Barbra Streisand's song". TRY to find her singing it in it's entirety ONCE live. it doesn't exist -according to her own fan club's president - because That note, that Mimi holds so perfectly, was manufactured in the studio. Never to be heard Live. Period. This was a well known FACT 30+ years ago. So, whose song is it? Who deserves the real credit? The Real Deal, Mireille Mathieu. Still blowing concert going, adoring fans away around the world 50 years later. Thanks, Toots. Keep it up. (new CDs still coming..)
Oh stop it ! First, Streisand has held longer notes than that on other songs and Mathieu is lip synching here. Streisand sings with style and personality and simply favors the "noblest" part of her repertoire when she gives concerts. Songs that are no more no less difficult than "Woman in love" actually ( and more difficult from an interpretive standpoint). She's a beast vocally , a beast who happens to know and have the good taste to think that however big the voice , not everything can be oversung and overblown , that a live perf has to allow for more intimate singing and she does that too. Mathieu is a joke in france , a mechanical performer who indeed was endowed with a big voice ( maybe the best we ever had) but goes about it with no intelligence, tossing it around indiscriminately and with no regard for interpretation ( as well as she was reduced to sing that horrendous german schlager , even in french adaptation , which killed the quality of her general repertoire giving her that more than middle of the road goody-two-shoes image everybody laughs at and preventing any sense of interpretation cause what's there to act with such maudlin material as " santa maria de la mer"?). We never had a singer of international stature that was the whole package ( I mean in the "contemporary" period from 60's to now). A girl with the temperament , the looks , the voice and the brains and a clear vision of her career . The closest was Nicole Croisille but she's let down by a not very attractive physical appearance ( she appeared ageless , meaning oldish, when she was in her thirties) and lacks that seduction and charm factor that even a strange look like Minnelli or Streisand have in abundance. At least , being ten years older than Mathieu, Croisille's singing is more timeless than those exagerated rolled R's that make Mathieu sound like an old singer of the 30's and she picked her material with care and knows how to stand on stage and hold an audience ( even if I'm prepared to say that the pure basic vocal instrument is not as good as Mathieu's but she uses it with so much more taste and intelligence) . Mathieu has always been an embarassment to listen to in interviews ( makes one wonder, after 60 years of career) and she has been singing off key for the last 25 years. Did you hear her do this particular song live in the last twenty years? Barry Gibb would crawl under his chair in embarrassment...Go watch Streisand record Bernstein's " and make our garden grow" from "Candide". It's on youtube. It's 1988, she is 46 years old and she just stands there in the recording booth , holding her headphones and giving you a friggin' final note that she holds for 19 seconds, sung full belt, much longer than this one in "Woman in love," and without the batting of an eye....
