Definitely my favorite Alex Ross comic. The characters he introduced at the end look interesting and I would like to see more of them. You're right about the Hanna Barbera influence and Toth has a hand in that too
@@ditkirbothe “Mavels Greatest Comics” reprints from the 70s are also great. Much better colors and not expensive. I find them at comic stores regularly
This is really a step up from his normal style, so much more clarity in the layout that both improves the storytelling and really embraces a classic comic book feel.
This a great book all around. Instead of another superhero slugfest Alex provides a thoughtful science fiction story. His model for Reed Richard's is Gary Conway who played Steve Burton in "Land of the Giants". Here's hoping for a sequel.
How have they not done Kingdom Come? That book was the biggest thing ever when it came out and I always loved it. I don’t get crazy excited of ross’s art anymore but kingdom come still works perfectly for me. Maybe one day
This was the first new book I've picked up in a long time, and for the last two weeks not a day passes without studying this. It also got me rerereading the LeeKirby run... It's amazing how much happens in each issue compared to comics today!
This book has such a unique quality to it. It both feels retro and ultra modern! This must be the most unique comic in years from the big 2. Also, love that Alex put his name in a circle in the lower right corner of the cover just as "the king" use to do. Fantastic book, left me wanting more! Great stuff!!!!!!
This book is so gorgeous! Snagged that the minute I saw it. Total love letter. And cool name drop of Mike Hinge! When he passed, his estate had an auction and I was lucky enough to buy some originals. Total futurist!
I was never into Ross’s style for comics, but this looks astounding. The genuine enthusiasm in Ed and Jim’s voices is infectious. I want this book. Thanks, gents
This was such a good graphic novel a perfect love letter to the Fantastic Four and a love letter to Stan and Jack I hope more comes out of this Marvel arts imprint
You guys are costing me a lot of money. I can't hold back from buying so many of these books you show off. Absolutely love your channel and everything you guys do. Thanks
I could be completely off base here but I was watching one of Alex's vids and he was inking the Thing and it appeared he was putting in those grey tones with a brush, I don't think it's pencil. Edit Alex put out a video today where he talks about how he did the grey tone that looks like pencil and it is dry brush not pencil
I recall reading that Alex Ross pitched Marvel for him to take over the Fantastic Four monthly comic book. Marvel rejected his pitch. This artwork looks gorgeous.
I enjoyed the hell out of this, fun read. I'm not much of an Alex Ross fan, but I think this is the best work he has ever done, inspired stuff. I hope he does more in this style - the Neal Adams influence is obvious along with Kirby of course. Rugg is so right with the black light inks, that should happen!
I just got this about a week ago. I pick up anything Alex Ross does because he has such a unique vision and talent, it's always refreshing and amazing.
Just placed my order for this while watching this! I was interested before but a little on the fence about getting it. Abrams Books sent this to the right guys!
Best FF comic in forever; made me feel like a kid again opening up a Jack Kirby Treasury Edition or those album reprints they did of the Adams' X-Men. If Steranko ever returns to comics before he passes, this is the level of craft and production value I'd expect. Oh, and the alien guy being based on Leonard Nimoy? Pretty sure it's actually Native American actor Wes Studi, which makes sense given the little speech about the planet's inhabitants being descended from their dimension’s Iroquois.
I loved the art work wasn't sure about the colors but opened my mind, hope he does another, this time explore the quantum realm with the silver surfer, that would be a mind blower.
Great video, guys. I love the look of this book, and I've meant to pick it up since it was announced. So, I just bought myself an early Christmas gift. Cheers!
This work by Ross is unbelievable. It’s ridiculously beautiful and the amount of detail is unreal. I can’t even really imagine how long this work took him to create. The color choices aren’t even really comprehensible vs most everyone else.
@Cartoonist Kayfabe The podcast Off Panel with David Harper released an interview with Alex Ross today discussing this book. The entire process is discussed from the earliest stages back in his Marvels days until today. David’s a great interviewer where he does his research and actually listens to his guest. I really think yous will enjoy this.
This looks way cooler than any other Alex Ross work. Also, I am currently reading Toms Fantastic Four Grand Design, Ross' book looks like a great chaser!
❤ Excellent review, guys! I’ve been pushing for this book since I heard about it last year! Alex Ross really stretches himself and he doesn’t have to and that’s what I love about his work! Very positive enthusiasm towards whatever he illustrates and I’ve heard dumbass over the hill fanboys piss n moan about Ross and just laugh at them at being fn narrow minded criticisms! It’s only a couple guys pooping and that’s just how silly it is. Ross excels and I hope to see him do more creative stories in the future! This book brought back a lot of great memories and just how unique the FF can be going forward with a creative dynamic! Thanks! And keep reading and making comix!👍😎🎯❤️⚡️💎
I would strongly recommend you guys do a deep dive into Knights of the 5th Dimension. It's a wonderful psychedelic love letter to Jack Kirby and the comics industry.
Heard about this. Not really a fan of this color palette. I rather see a pencil version of this. But I do appreciate him experimenting and trying out different stuff even if it is not what I want from him.
Where have I heard the name 'Ricardo Jones' before? Given Rick's later connection to the Negative Zone when he was bonded with Captain Marvel, might this suggest Ricardo is a future version of him… and did he want to be The Thing because he needed to return to the Negative Zone to complete some mission but with Mar-Vell dead he needed protection in the form of Ben's rocky hide? And the Nega-Bands are sliced up Cosmic Control Rods?
I still haven't read it but I'm looking forward to it. My only complaint is the sound effect vector font lettering. It stands out so much and is such a bummer, especially for a project like this. I think they should have hand drawn the sound effect lettering to better integrate the effect with the art. Seeing the repeat E in SKREEEE is gross. The same thing happened to me with Dustin Nguyen's art in Robin & Batman. He did these amazing watercolor pages that were then defiled by cheap vector sound effects, totally takes me out of the story. I know it is not a big deal for a lot of people but it has been pissing me off for a while now. I'm fine with dialogue fonts but for SFX, I'm against it.
You guys are wrong about the use of pencil. I went to watch some of Alex Ross' videos on this book and he explained that it's all drybrush. Interestingly, though, he also revealed that he wasn't using actual ink but jet black gouache. So he's kind of cheating in a way and still sticking to the comfort of paints. This also explains the atypical drybrush marks.
I got a nice 4K, 55' flatscreen...sometimes I feel guilty watching Cartoonist Kayfabe because I can read the whole comic in crystal clear beauty on my couch, just by discreetly pausing...anyone else do this?
I've never been a Ross fan, and have slipped into "hater" territory from time to time over the past couple of decades. But his Immortal Hulk covers showed some surprising stylistic shifts/growth, and prompted me to pick this up. Incredibly glad I did. It's stunning.
I wish someone else had inked it. He's obviously a great watercolorist and painter, but that doesn't make him a good inker. Different skillsets. If he were out in the world, trying to sell himself in that capacity, I think he'd have problems.
Alex Ross can't write comics.. He is overrated & full of gas.. He overwhelms us with technicality.. His artwork has no heart or action.. I have a lot of his artwork and continue to buy some of his books out of habit not anticipation not from being excited
If only Abrams would publish Barry Windsor-Smith's unpublished Thing story in a book like this!
Definitely my favorite Alex Ross comic. The characters he introduced at the end look interesting and I would like to see more of them. You're right about the Hanna Barbera influence and Toth has a hand in that too
Its fun seeing Alex Ross doing something different
W2ww
Yeah it really is!! & It lends itself to the story really well!!💥💯💥💯💥💯
Glad you guys covered this. This and Tom’s grand design makes me want to read more weird F4 stories
Buy the Essential FF, the colors suck on the Epics and Omnis but the inks sing with Sinnott's on newsprint.
@@ditkirbothe “Mavels Greatest Comics” reprints from the 70s are also great. Much better colors and not expensive. I find them at comic stores regularly

Glad to hear Skinner and Alexis Ziritt shouted out. I’m a complete mark for this psychedelic palette.
Good stuff. That annihilus splash page is amazing
Can’t wait to cop me this book. Glad to see you guys cover this!
This is awesome. Alex Ross is an amazing artist. You guys NEED to interview Alex Ross on Cartoonist Kayfabe. That would be a fantastic interview.
Can't wait to get mine. Supposed to come today!

I watched the first few minutes of this and then ordered it on Amazon, this was the best advertising to make a sale. Thanks for not spoiling the end!
I was never into Ross’s style for comics, but this looks astounding. The genuine enthusiasm in Ed and Jim’s voices is infectious. I want this book. Thanks, gents
Agreed💯💯💯
So glad you guys are covering this book. You guys got to get Ross in the chair for an interview! That'd be epic.
Thanks
I'm so glad to see my favourite comic book artist wrote & draw my favorite Marvel superhero team, this book is absolute fantastic! (no pun intended)
Literally the other tab open in my browser is the video on Alex Ross' channel where he is inking this. Gotta watch this first tho! ^^
Ed, rightfully, hyping up that two page spread. "Here we go, flip it... flip it!"
I ordered this the other day and can't wait for it to come. A master stretching himself and doing something else -- I'm in.
I immediately bought the book on the strength of your insights. We can't get this level of detail anywhere else. Great job guys!

Mike Hinge and Neal Adams collaboration is in Heavy Metal July 1979 and it's gorgeous.
Oh wow. Im glad u guys covered this considering u dont usually cover many new releases. I loved the book.
Great video, also helps me appreciate the book even more. The art / colouring was amazing, really pleased I picked up this book

Such a feast for the eyes, Alex Ross man he's one of those untouchable artists for me for sure.
I loved the art work wasn't sure about the colors but opened my mind, hope he does another, this time explore the quantum realm with the silver surfer, that would be a mind blower.
He did a great interview with on Word Balloon with John Siuntres about this. He discussed the Kirby influence. Great stuff guys!
Thanks for doing this! Such a crazy cool book. I’m not an artist so I’m really happy you guys broke down some of the work that went into this.
Great video, guys. I love the look of this book, and I've meant to pick it up since it was announced. So, I just bought myself an early Christmas gift. Cheers!
I want you guys to do a video on Kingdom Come!
Very cool to see Ross be so experimental.
Such a beautiful book!
This is so cool! Really hope Marvel does more of these because I will by every single one (done by interesting people)
What if EC comics did the fantastic 4?
I was looking forward to you guys covering this, had a feeling you'd like it, and yeah too bad Tom wasn't there
RIP ED PISKOR🕊👑🕊👑🕊

ZOMG new book spoilers! I need to catch-up. FF is my jam
I want an Alex Ross commentary over this video
Love you guys!
Please Please Please Please 🤞 come out with a Treasury size edition of Red Room.
Thanks.

I love the colors! Reminds me of the original coloring of The Killing Joke from absolute edition. The wild greens and beautiful comic book colors
I dig the Laura Allred mention, I don't think she gets enough credit.
Should’ve left it at just black and white.
Just ordered my copy. Also “Kirby Cackle” is the name of my new death metal band.
Where have I heard the name 'Ricardo Jones' before?

The Thing's, the only different one, leg is out of sync. In that sense it makes sense.
I love this book!
Seriously love what Ross did here. It’s better than Marvels in color treatment.
Alex Ross Red Room variant

Jeeez!
Great X-Men Legends cover Jim
ABRAMS..should publish John Byrnes Xmen Elsewhen …
It's dry brush, guys. Alex said so in his videos.

The only crit I have on this is the attempt at a Kirby collage looks like Ross took photos from someone’s colonoscopy and dropped the saturation.
Must be honest, curious about the story but the Thing… I don't like how he draws him, the rock lines doesn't work for me 🤷
👍🏻
Anyone else get big time Lee Bermejo vibes?
Alex Ross can't write comics..
He is overrated & full of gas..
He overwhelms us with technicality..
His artwork has no heart or action..
I have a lot of his artwork and continue to buy some of his books out of habit not anticipation not from being excited
Thanks!
