I follow SaMo almost since the beginning, which means about 20 years now, and I have to say one thing about these guys: they are still the same grounded, nice and relatable people! If you meet them on festivals, medieval markets or by accident in a town, you always can have a handshake and a little chat with them. They are one one of these bands who fought their way upwards from little shows to Wacken Open Air (probably the biggest Metal festival in the world) but never forgot their roots and have a strong connection to their fans. 🤘Same goes for In Extremo, Subway To Sally and Schandmaul.
Finally! I was hoping you´ll "find" this Song! They actually made an english version as well. The whole story is based on a German PnP Game, "Das schwarze Auge" (The black eye) which is around for 4 decades now
Fun fact: The only two (aside from the extras) who actually know how to fence are the first and last one to die. Bernhard Hennen, the dying knight who hands them the map in the beginning, and Falk, who lights the beacon. Hennen is one of the authors of the tie-in novel, Falk mostly plays the hurdy gurdy and bag pipes. Back in the 1990s, both were in show fencing troupes (and knew each other from medieval faires where both groups would do shows). Hennen was a main contributor to the lore of The Dark Eye. Falk also wrote material for the game. Hennen is one of Germany's biggest fantasy authors, and some of his books have even made it to the Anglosphere. If you like reading, give his Elven series a try.
So we've found a fantasy fan who just discovered her taste for European folk metal (yes Germany is quite prominent in the genre but our neighbors [not necessarily next door] have a variety to offer). Take a seat, this might take some time 😉 Saltatio Mortis feat. Faun: Schwarzer Strand (Black Beach, also from the Finsterwacht album). Saltatio Mortis feat. Lara Loft: The Dragonborn Comes - From The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Wind Rose: Diggy Diggy Hole (cover of a Minecraft meme song, it's hilarious but a catchy good track too) Feuerschwanz: I See Fire (Ed Sheeran/ The Hobbit cover) I personally prefer the live version feat. Angus McFife (aka Thomas Winkler) over the original video version but I've also seen comments from people stating they feel the very opposite. Feuerschwanz: Highlander (inspired by the 1986 fantasy-action movie of the same title). And for different genres like symphonic metal: The Dark Side Of The Moon feat. Charlotte Wessels: May It Be (Enya/ Lord of the Rings cover). The Dark Side Of The Moon: Jenny of Oldstones (Game of Thrones cover). Or melodic death metal combined with trance metal: Amaranthe: Archangel
I second the suggestions of "Pray to the Hunter" and "The Dragonborne comes" by Saltatio Mortis. Their collaboration with Peyton Parrish "God of War" might also be worth a look. If you are into this kind of thing, you might also try Feuerschwanz (also German Medieval Metal) "Warriors of the World" has a lot of German speaking metal guest artists. Mostly singing in German, the band have recently published some English songs (both original ans covers), eg Highlander (yes, inspired by the movie) and Valhalla calling. One of the Feuerschwanz singers has a side project called "D'Artagnan". Which I like very much, but many German Metal fands think is a bit too folky and the lyrics a bit overdone to be taken seriously. (Which does not matter, of course, for non native speakers). For me it's feel-good music. "C'est la vie" eg is really good, ans also their latest release "Mosqueteros" (. (And they have their own mini movie with "My love's in Germany" - be warned, however: the song is a Scottish folk song from 1794, so even if it has Zora Cock from Blackbriar in it, Metal it is not. But it has Bagpipes.)
Happy to see you enjoyed it. As a fun side note, the complete Album is also a RPG campaign for The Dark Eye (Das Schwarze Auge) which is kinda like Germanys DnD.
Long time follower of SaMo. I've seen them live on multiple occasions, in a rock concert environment or at medieval fairs. I enjoywd the latter a hole lot more 😉
I forget : Saltatio Mortis is part of the Big german Medieval Rock Bands. The others are Schandmaul, In Extremo, Feuerschwanz, Faun, and Subway to Sally.
May I leave another request? I just realised, you havent reacted to Blind Guardians 2016 Gig at Wacken. The Bards Song and Valhalla. Just for the Feeling🖤
Saltatio Mortis began in 2000 as Street and Medieval Market Bend. The electric guitars were added later. They still give acoustic concerts today. The band name is Latin, so it is pronounced similarly to Spanish. Most of their songs are in German. The German language fits here well with the content. They became internationally known through their English-language songs: SALTATIO MORTIS - Früher war alles besser | Napalm Records
May I leave a request? I´m sure you´ll love it. Its another Band from Germany. Powerwolf, they mix Speedmetal with symphonic Metal, classical Opera Sound and christian (medieval) chorals (The Leadsinger was a professional Singer before he joined the Band). Some people say they are blasphemic, so how much more advertising do you need? 🐺 It would be great if you´d have an eye on Powerwolf´s Song "1589" which is based on the most famous german Werewolfstory, a "true" Story, which happened in ....well 1589 ;) You will love it!
Great Reation but you miss the Hidden scene ;) All Members are in the Video. The Singers Name are ,,Alea der Bescheidene,, (Alea the Humble One), the Guy with the arrow in the Neck is ,,Luzi das L,, (Luzi the L) he is one of the Bagpipes Player, the one who dies on the tree is ,,Bruder Frank,, (Brother Frank) he is the Bass Player, the Guy who sacrifices himself for his comrade are Till Promill (Till Alcohol Level) is the Guitarist, the with Bald Head is ,,El Silbador,, the Second Bagpipe Player (Funfact the Bagpipe Player is make your own instruments), the Guy with black Hair are ,, Jean Méchant,, the Drummer of the Band (and exzellent Guitar Player to), and last not least the Guy with the Long Hair are ,,Falk Irmenfried von Hasen-Mümmelstein,, (Falk Irmenfried from Bunny-Eatstone) he is the Hurdy Gurdy Player (and Bagpipes to). The Song are from the Album ,,Finsterwacht,, comes out in May, and ist a Art of concept Album and Homage to the German Pen&Paper/Table Top Game ,,Das Schwarze Auge,, (The Black Eye). Check the Saltatio Mortis Songs ,,The Dragonborn Comes,, with Lara Loft - ,,Pray to the Hunter,, - ,,My Mother told me,, - ,,Schwarzer Strand (Black Beach),, - LOKI (Live version) - and so many more ^^
Like I said, thats epic. 😂 You like Blind Guardian?, awesome. A very nice Song with Hansi is Raven Child from Avantasia. Its one of my Alltime Favorit Songs. And if you want to listen to something very special listen to Coppelius. 😅
A nice reaction! :) First of all: There is an English version of Finsterwacht: Darkenguard, which came out 2 weeks ago: th-cam.com/video/GPOzqI57d2s/w-d-xo.html And there is a director's cut with a narrator, telling the story of the video (so not an music video) - but only in German yet. But I think you got most of it :) th-cam.com/video/kSgBbfep4vU/w-d-xo.html Aaaand there is an 1:20 h ambiance album, as accompaniment for novel and solo (see below): th-cam.com/video/po3ZdP1az4c/w-d-xo.html PS: You missed the litte easter egg at the very end ;) A bit of background: Finsterwacht was the first single from Saltatio Mortis' concept album Finsterwacht ("dark watch" or "Darkenguard"), an hommage to the famous German tabletop RPG Das Schwarze Auge (DSA)/The Dark Eye (TDE) for it's 40 years aniversary, and for their "Burgentour 2024" (castle tour) with many concerts at castles. The box contains the CD, a novel (one of the authors - Bernhard Hennen - is the one, who dies on the field after handing out the map), a tabletop adventure book (solo adventure, choose your own adventure style) and dice. Saltatio Mortis is a German medieval rock band, but they also mix in different music styles - the band members all play different instruments, nearly all backpipes. There are 5 singles out: Fintserwacht, "Schwarzer Strand" ("black beach"), "Feuer und Erz" ("Fire Ore" - also with the choir), "Der Himmel muss warten" ("Heaven has to wait") and "We might be giants". There are also (German) making of videos for most of the music videos. DSA/TDE might be the RPG with the longest living history worldwide. The Finsterwacht (Darkenguard) are a line of towers/beacons in the mountains of Finsterkamm, as last line of defense between the lands of humans and orcs (as seen in the video) at Heldentrutz, a part of Weiden in the Middenrealm at the continent of Aventuria. Their function is to warn the people as seen in the video. Saltatio Mortis (latin for "dance of the death") is the group trying to reach this goal in the video - all 7 members are in the video. The orkensturm was an event, when the orcs attacked the Middenrealm some years ago (ingame). Rondra, who is sung about in the chant/prayer, is the goddess of honorable fight etc. The video took only 4 days of shooting at Burg Lichtenberg (Lichtenberg Castle), Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, with a lot of LARPers - which is why they have such good costumes. The choir at the beginning and end is the Prague orchestra (there is also a making of). Hansi from Blind Guardian sings most of the chorus and also the chant, sometimes alone, sometimes with Saltatio Mortis' lead singer Alea (the blonde, bearded guy - second last one who dies).
Great reaction. Grettings from northern Germany 😊

A bit of background:
Finsterwacht was the first single from Saltatio Mortis' concept album Finsterwacht ("dark watch" or "Darkenguard"), an hommage to the famous German tabletop RPG Das Schwarze Auge (DSA)/The Dark Eye (TDE) for it's 40 years aniversary, and for their "Burgentour 2024" (castle tour) with many concerts at castles.
