I must have been in 9 or 10 standard, when Papa bought MusicToday's "Evening Ragas" single cassette. It cost 60-65 INR then.. pretty handsome amount in those days.. the album featured this masterpiece in Raag Nand, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan - Shyam Kalyan and Pt. Rajan & Sajan Mishra - Raag Pooriya Kalyan. Worth every paise so paid...
I am an ardent admirer of Pandit Mansur. Coming from Dharwad, Karnataka, his home town, had the good fortune of listening to him many times live and grew up listening to him on Akashvani Dharwad. This is one of my favourites.
We should not forget that on two occasions Mallikarjun Mansur was chosen by the Guru. Once by Nilkanthbuwa Alurmath, and another time by Ustad Manji Khan. In the first case he was just about 11-12 years old and singing in dramas. In the second case he was about 24 years old and had six years training under Nilkanthbuwa. These both masters would not have selected a pupil unless they had seen seeds of greatness in him.
Forty years ago, I had the fortune of listening to him in Ahmedabad and since then I collected several cassettes and other CDs etc. I followed him wherever possible and listened to him. My last listening him was in Lucknow where I was working. Since my mother is also Kannadiga (I rarely speak Kannada as only a few Kannadigas were there in Lucknow) I gatecrashed to the stage and introduced in Kannada. He was so happy and thrilled to talk to a Kannadiga in Hindi heartland. He offered me Tea and also bidi which I gladly accepted. He spoke to my wife very affectionately and it was unforgettable moment. As badluck would have been his leaving this music world was not known to me immediately. One Saturday on the National Programme of Hindustani Music on his memory (having left heavenly abode recently) they paid respects and homage by broadcasting 90 minutes choicest of his rendering. I immediately took my vintage tape recorder and the entire concert was recorded which I have kept for posterity.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I believe that Mallikarjunji was and remains one of the greatest and for some The Greatest Khyal Voclalists of our Music. Please check my other channel 'Thesangeetveda' that also has many recordings of Mansurji.
Whenever I listen to him tears roll spontaneously recalling my unforgettable experience. Thanks for the additional information about Mansoorji link. I shall certainly listen more from this greatest vocalist.
Dear Mandurai...If God asked me to bring back one musician, it would be him. Such is my adulation towards him. Is it possible to interact with you? My Email Id : pgrnair@gmail.com and I am located in Doha
Good to read comments from the music lovers and fans of the Great Mansurji. My own view is that Mansurji was and remains probably the Greatest Khyal Vocalist. Of course this is a subjective judgement. I confess that if Ido not listen to his voice at least once a day I get 'withdrawal symptoms'!
Shyamgopal Kundapurkar Please check another you tube channel created by me where I have started uploading large part of my collection. The channel is named 'sangeetveda1'. Thanks.
dattaji : I totally agree. Not a single day passes without listening to him, esp Raga like Gandhari Todi, Shivmat Bhairav and Ramdasi Malhar. He is the greatest Indian vocalist of last century.
I am from Dharwad and fan of Mansurji. Almost daily enjoying his gaaayan. I had seen him and not knowing his greatness. TH-cam made me mad about goodness of him after retirement.
He is one of the Hindustani classical singers whom I cherish. He takes hold right after the first 'sa'. Along with Gangubai, Bhimsen and Kumar Gandharva he is a member of the unmatched KANNADA QUARTET.
I do not have words to express... first heard this way back in Tape era when India Today sold the tapes in music appreciation series ... Have been returning to it very often yet it amazes me each time I listen to this brilliant rendering..superb....bliss......May his soul rest in peace....
@@dattaji_music I had this recording in tape in 1990s...was one of my favourite. Technology changed and I lost it. Today I was searching for this on net as did not recalled the name of the Raga.. Now I feel blessed and lucky to get this recording. Many thanks to you
An elegant, eloquent and melodic raga with a touch of folk tune, Raga Nand is ethereal to listen to and no one has perfected it like my favourite musician Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur. It’s appeal is instantaneous and carries a a touch of fragility
Great !! This Nand Raaga gave me Amitha Aanand , , Baaje Sayya , Sakala vana dhundun na pave Sayya ,,?? Beautiful , beautiful , Pranaam to Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur ji
Amazing , Pt.ji makes the taan rendition sound so simple and even the raag so easy, the amount of knowledge is so immense. It is our wealth 🙏🏼❤. We are blessed.
I am from Dharwad Karnataka, hearing his Sangit since 1965, now daily hobby, great perfection and involvement, gem of Jaipur Autroli Gharana.
Pt Mallikarjuna Mansoor is a phenomenal singer. It is amazing that south India produced such renouned Hindustani singers

dattaji I think for us, Mansur Bhakts, on the lines of "hari anant, hari-kathaa anantaa", it's a case of "Anna anant, Anna-kathaa anantaa" !

Certainly one of the greatest. The sweetness of his voice reminds me of the great DV Paluskar.

Very jabardasta Gayaki shata shata prana m to. Panditji
In raag Nand the master shows how delicate he can be in singing.

why this music hits my heart, i do not know.
Because his music comes from the depths of his own beautiful heart & touches yours with so much joy..
He was God's own man. Chaste & pristine.
Thanks for the upload. Pt. Mansoor's singing is very unique and I have been listening to these recordings again and again.
