From one's own perspective, one only experiences the present moment. Death, as we understand it, is something that consciousness cannot experience directly, because consciousness ceases in that moment.
That is one way to look at it, but as some others pointed out, at this time we dont know anything about the spirit whether it exists or not, this we only assume. My argument would be what happens to consciousness when we dream or are in deep sleep, at that moment we arent aware of the waking self/observer, yet when we come out of those states we still do remember that we went to sleep, in some case we also remember parts of the dream for a short moment. This proves that there is another observer that is not the waking observer but still watches in the background. I beleive it is that observer in the background that is truly conscious, the waking observer is just a manifestation of the environment around that observer, i.e. the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves. And it is this background observer which is consious that never dies. And what never dies never experiences death. As simple as that. This is what can be found in the Mandukya Upanishad if anyone is intrested.
The primary confusion comes when humans discover their cosmic significance. In this video it comes in the form of saying that the universe conforms to the questions we ask, that this is the SOURCE of meaning. But that is the crux of the misunderstanding. Meaning exists beyond us. When we make the connection to our higher mind, higher self, the left brain view cannot see the whole. The truth of everything is whole.
