Hi, please drop us an email at helpdesk@itoosoft.com with more details and we'll be happy to help. This tutorial is quite old now and there have been many improvements to the plugin since it was published. It might be that one of the steps is slightly different in the latest versions.

Sorry to hear that - which part doesn't work for you? There are a few differences in recent versions of FP so some names and locations of things may have changed.
You could see Surfaces as a type of area that also contains terrain information. The usual procedure is to apply a terrain as a surface, but since you don't want the items to scatter on every part of the terrain, you'd then disable it in the areas list and then create Spline or other types of areas to determine the boundaries of the scatter. The splines control the boundaries, the terrain controls the position on the Z axis, Basically, Surfaces are the physical geometry onto which objects are scattered (e.g., terrains), ensuring they conform to the 3D shape. Areas are boundaries or rules that control where scattering happens, like splines used for inclusion or exclusion zones.
It's probably still good for understanding some basics, but much has changed since then. I'd recommend this one as a more up to date overview of the basics th-cam.com/video/hJZ6RCXT-2w/w-d-xo.html
