I was at Wimbledon in 1969 and watched part of this match. Charlie could not believe he lost this match. He was just amazed by Pancho's effort.
The crowd is so quiet. No yelling or screaming just cheers and applause
I wish that I had seen Gonzales in his prime:
still this is pretty good for an old guy
There's one extended like almost 20 minute highlight video of Gonzales & Hoad now on youtube. Just keep in mind that Serves & Returns played a Much bigger role back then, and of course low tech equipment. Still those guys could Play, for their time & the crap rackets and strings especially
I watched that match in 1969, and ended peering through my fingers, because I couldn't bear to look, it was so tense. Thank you so much for this clip, the quality is excellent.
That was a marathon match
They're playing in slow motion.
They make it look easy and the pace is much faster than it looks on video.
Grandpa's never told me they played with squash rackets back then.
At 7 yrs old july 9 69 I was in the last week of being 6 yrs old when I watched this live with my dad . It was the first tennis match that I remember watching from start to finish. For me tennis was a mental game of never giving up. If you hang in there a good 5 minutes can lead to victory. Served as a motivating factor whenever I felt defeated later in life .
