- Big 20 foot Douglas Fir on the Wood Mizer LT40 sawmill being milled into 2x12's and 1x's -- that stuff was heavy! Milling 20 foot logs isn't easy but it's not too hard either! The Wood Mizer Lt40 can take 21 foot logs so let's get it milled up!
After arriving onsite and getting the sawmill set up we dove right into the first log of the day, a big 20 foot Douglas Fir that made a ton of 2x12's! Now you're getting into some back breaking work!
It took one band on the sawmill to finish out this log, that's a bunch of lumber and a lot of sweat! But how about the location? Gorgeous I'd say!

[As many of you may know, making TH-cam videos is hard work! It can take this Old Jarhead 4 to 5 hours of editing (and a liberal amount of cussing) to edit one video! Of course, some day The Old Jarhead may monetize but that means a few pennies a month from the YT program (a TH-camr with 10 times the subscribers I have noted that he does get paid and it's about 1 tank of gas a month worth of pennies) as such this Old Jarhead is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com which may help cover some of the cost of camera gear etc in order to bring these videos to you!].
Great video there Sir. I think your wife did a great job filming. Now that’s the kind of logs I would like to mill. ( I wouldn’t want to off load..lol ) I feel for them poor folks.
Great job on explain your process and also on mill the log up. Hey and by the way I like them magnet signs.. thanks for sharing . Take care !!
Thanks Bud! Yup, the wife filmed on the last two jobs! She has in the past as well but it's been a while. Funny on the signs! Darci made those and then I saw yours and realized she made the same kind! Great minds think alike I guess! ha! Cheers and thanks for watching!
Wow! Another monster log! The hubby understands milling more than I do, but your videos are really interesting. Love seeing all that lumber!
Glad you found them :D Wait till the trip to Mullan ID comes out! That was a TON of lumber! About 5000 board feet in one job :D We made a lot of sawdust that trip :D
I appreciate the way you explain what you are doing and why you are doing things the way you do. I am learning a lot. Thank you
Thanks! I appreciate the the feedback!
Well done, looks like a great job with even better scenery. I've got a love hate for long logs/timber. Eight to twelve footers are what I'd consider ideal, then again whatever makes the customer happy is the most ideal 😁
Fir me it's 16 or less ;) No walking around the tire then! lol and 15 to 29 inches in diameter is the sweet spot!
Very good !! Looks like you had some good workers. Makes things a lot more enjoyable. Thanks for the great videos !
Cheers !!
Thanks! And yes! My customers worked hard! But then They were a Firefighter and a Policewoman so there is that! ;) Firefights, cops, military, all very similar in their work ethic and drive! Awesome to work for these folks and they worked HARD! The next log was even BIGGER! Yeeha!
Good job on the whole thing. Like Steve, below, I'd LOVE to mill logs like those; just a little shorter.
Dave
Thanks! Got more big logs comin!
Thanks!
Thank you SO much!!! I really appreciate the support!
Hi bro american in the Philippines. I work productively in lumber mills in ore. We had a mill right working every day and more sharpeners working daily. I like to see it done still.
I hear ya! I used to work in a Pulp Mill up north back in the early 90's. We had a guy that sharpened all chainsaw chains and kept the saws tuned and we had millwrights that pounded out the saw blades and kept them sharp. Was an amazing environment at times! Thanks for watching!
Another good video.
I have just over 2000hrs on the woodmizer now and I have always adjusted or tightened the band while cutting or with the blade running. Don't usually touch it till the blade gets to hot in a wide cut and psi drops to 2600 or below.
On real log logs I have cut a couple of blocks for each end close to the hight of the bunks.
They are not perfect but keeps that 1/4" sag out of the logs.
Awesome thanks bud! Your ears ringing? Kevin and I were just chatting!
I'll have try tightening while running! That's a new one for me. Tha js!
Hi, at the moment i mill Douglas Fir as well. But here in Germany they didnt get that big. the biggest i coud get was arround 25 inch.. greeting Wolfgang
Greetings! That is still a big log ;) But we do have monsters out here that dwarf even the biggest I've milled!
It makes my back hurt just watching those customers.
Hey! Thanks for the sub! and yes, makes my back hurt too....wait, my back DOES hurt! lol
Too long for me.
We opted to forgo the hydraulics
Did that the first mill but love them now!
