      This is probably a different spot. There's 3 different "hot tubs" in the rocks out at that spot. One of them is really steep, but that's not this one. The steep one is usually full of oil and water in the bottom so it's hard to get out because your tires are covered in oil. Otherwise if you have a long wheel base it's pretty easy too.
      Moab has obstacles for every level of capability. It's really fun. I also have a Land Cruiser on 40" tires that is way more capable, but I have just as much fun in my daily driver 4Runner. And it's remarkably good. I usually take the 4runner now instead of towing my crawler with a truck.

      It does. Believe it or not I've now taken the same 4runner through the Rubicon twice now! And... It's been bulletproof. I can literally jump in and drive it 750 miles to the Rubicon in comfort. Rib the Rubicon end to end and drive home. It's been supremely durable.

    • @MrJcjet
      @MrJcjet  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      There's a couple hot tubs in that area - one of them is steeper on the exit. If that one is wet in the bottom - it's almost impossible to climb out - in part because so many vehicles have leaked oil there that your tires get a nice oil slick on them if its wet in the bottom. So it might be a different hot tub that's harder. The 4runner's pretty darn capable for a daily driver, but in all honesty it's no match on the technical stuff for a more built vehicle. Only if it were a jeep on 37's with open differentials - the 4runner would probably win.

      Thanks! I love Moab. I live pretty close, so I get to go play on the rocks a lot.
      I've had the 4runner for 6 years now. Been everywhere from Southern California to Canada. Through the Rubicon twice. That's far more challenging than this video. And I've literally never broken anything. I expect to. I carry spare axles and drive shafts. But I've never needed one. It's incredibly durable.

  • @dixonbuttes6564

    Really should be the video that is linked to every video of all the highly modified vehicles flipping, rolling, and getting stuck in there.

    • @MrJcjet
      @MrJcjet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Fwiw, there's more than one hot tub in this area. This one is not as challenging as some others. People do roll on this one. But most carnage is on one that's steeper coming out. And there's a lot of really bad drivers in short wheel base 4x4s that manage to do some pretty dumb stuff.
      - incidentally the side by side you see at the top rolled later the same day at an even easier spot. I don't know them, we were just out for the day at the same time. Nice people. But the driver was super drunk. And I helped recover the rolled sxs and get it back upright and down the hill they were on. Driver was pretty shook up, but no one was hurt.

    • @deejayimm
      @deejayimm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also noticed that in a lot of those videos where you see them struggling, the rocks are not dry as they are in this video.
      Dry rock is world's different than even slightly damp rock, let alone all the oil and Gunk that collects at the bottom of these, and then mixes with the moisture.
      I've heard Moab wheelers say that when the rock is dry like this, it's almost like asphalt.

    • @MrJcjet
      @MrJcjet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@deejayimm A lot of videos are in harder places too. I'm not totally sure why after 4 years this video all of the sudden started getting TH-cam views.
      It's more like sandpaper than asphalt or concrete. It's super grippy - even more than asphalt or concrete. Even wet. Sometimes a quick rain shower actually makes it better by washing away the fine dust. But a couple hot tubs are usually full of oil and water and they are really hard with a short wheel base and oily tires. The ones that make everything look easy are crawlers on "red label" or "sticky" tires. They have super soft rubber that isn't DOT legal, but gets amazing traction on the rock. It's like race car tires vs regular street tires.

    the new broncos had trouble in there and a4runner didint? wow!

    • @MrJcjet
      @MrJcjet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know for sure - but probably not. There is more than one "bathtub" on hell's revenge trail. This one is pretty easy compared to one near it called "mickey's hot tub". This was when the 4R was almost new, so I wouldn't take it into mickey's hot tub. I would now though. I haven't been out on Hell's revenge in a couple years. Next time I'll give it a go. That hot tub really depends on conditions - namely, the bottom is usually full of water and oil mixed together from all the vehicles leaking oil into the bottom when they flip upside down. So you end up with oil slick tires and a wet rock edge trying to get out. When it's totally dry - its not that bad. When it's full of oil and water - it's very very hard to climb out with a short wheel base vehicle. OTOH - on that obstacle, a long wheel base like a Ram Powerwagon, it's basically a nothing obstacle. With a short wheel base wrangler? it's essentially impossible.
      FWIW - the bronco should be better than a mostly stock 4Runner on most of the obstacles around Moab - it has bigger tires, more suspension travel, and is more optimized for this type of use. I've also taken this 4Runner through the Rubicon trail - end to end - two times, so it's no slouch - but I wouldn't want to do it stock. That was with 34" tires, skid plates, and a winch. All of which were used fully. I think a stock Bronco with the offroad package would cruise though the Rubicon without too much trouble.
      The main reason I like the 4R is that I can drive it comfortably 700 miles to the Rubicon, spend a week camping and off roading, and then drive 700 miles home with full confidence that it's not going to break down. And I can also tow my 4500lb travel trailer cross country with the same vehicle. It's not the best pure rock crawler by any stretch. A Bronco or Wrangler will be better at that. It's not the best highway cruiser. Or the best tow vehicle. What it really is - it's a swiss army knife that does a bunch of things pretty well.

    • @blackonefifty
      @blackonefifty 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A Badlands/Sasquatch Bronco did the actual Mickey’s hot tub with ZERO issue at EJS a little while back. This isn’t the hot tub.

    • @MrJcjet
      @MrJcjet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blackonefifty There's more than one hot tub there. The harder one is mostly just a question of wheel base. I have also been through the Rubicon twice in this 4runner with a lot less damage than the broncos. But that's likely driver skill more than vehicle capability. The broncos should do better on that trail. Pretty sure I could drive one through with no damage.
      In my actual rock crawler fj40 on 40's, none of those obstacles are much of a challenge. It takes more difficult trails to have much fun. OTOH, my stock F250 wouldn't even make it past the gate keeper at almost any trail. I'm not sure it could even get to the gate keeper on the Rubicon. Just different vehicles for different purposes.

      @@clarkbigatel5377 This is my daily driver and it was really noisy on the highway. I put an arb locker in. They recently (I think around 2019) changed how they manufacture the spider gears. They are now forged and the gear faces are not machined or shaped for quiet gear mesh. So in 2wd, the drivers side axle still drives there internal spider gears and they basically free wheel inside. So on the road at highway speed is really noisy. I replaced once and second one was the same as the first. Sent video to arb and they replaced again with a third one that I never installed and just sold it. Arb was good about the warranty, but it's just not a great product for a daily driver anymore. Unless it's full time 4wd or in a rear axle. Maybe the Eaton is better? Or maybe you could take apart and polish the gears yourself? Not sure.

I've driven my 4Runner there twice (and through the Rubicon). The AT3's had no issues with that type of offroad use. They wouldn't be very good in mud though. But I live in the southwest, so mud is rare for me. Is it one of the TRD trims or base model?

    • @MrJcjet
      @MrJcjet  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Short answer is that it's a TRD off road with KDSS. It's not completely stock, but close. You can see the license plate flap - it has a hidden winch behind it so the plate flips up. It has about 1" lift and different tires in this video.
      Longer version is that it's a 2015 "trail" model. Toyota reorganized the names in about 2017, then for 2020 recycled the Trail model with different features. So now a "trail" model is not the same option set what was a trail model 2010-2017. This would now be called a "TRD off road premium." It has the rear locker, mts, crawl, and KDSS.
      But - ATRAC really does work really well. I think a stock SR5 would be just fine in the same spot. It might slip a bit more. But it would work.

I scratched up the bumpers around moab, but I kinda knew that was going to be part of the deal. I figure I'll plan on just buying new covers when I sell it. I have a hidden winch under the bumper and like the stock look. I also have an fj40 on 40's so I don't take my 4runner on the hardcore stuff, but it is pretty amazing how capable it is for a vehicle that gets 20mpg on the highway and cruises comfortablyat 80mph.
      also fwiw the biggest area that it needs protection is the crossover pipe/transfer case. I added a heavy steel skid there and hit it fairly often. th-cam.com/video/fpSiA1bCU9c/w-d-xo.html
