  • For adult beginners & even those whom studies the 'Way' for a long period of time, knee strain & injuries would be the most common problems we shall face when the art requires long periods of kneeling up and down of Seiza regardless of Budo or other Japanese Cultural Arts.
    One fortunate levity that Seitei have is it allows Iaidoka to practice & grade in Standing positions as well - particularly for those who have knee problems. Technically the techniques and leg movements are essentially the same, so for those who wants to put less strain in their knees & those who are not fortunate to have a soft practice surface or misplaced their knee pads - try Kata 1 - 4 standing.
    of course whenever possible it is advisable to wear knee pads or practice in soft surface that does not put heavy pressure on our knees. However sometimes when it reach that stage we need to consider protecting it more from deteriorating knees.

    I learnt Mae advancing with my back feet going fowards up to my front heel and Tsuakaate only doing one step with my right feet. It's only a matter of distance. Buy I think it also may work the way you do it. I like watching people training and improving. Keep going!

      and yes perhaps i should've said the standing kata is my interpretation from the seiza position, i wasnt formerly taught to do it standing. Just some observations when doing grading by senior iaidokas

    How does the YT algorithm know this is exactly the video I need? :-) Just this Monday I finally got to the stage where I have all the parts I need to do a standing Mae (though I suck at it, of course). And you even do the flat/horizontal saya position on noto my sensei does.
    Yet another great video. And as I finally got an obi, it's training time at home... :-) And I also do love my knees. Good Mizuno knee pads are helping, but yeah, seiza sucks. :-)

      Haha TH-cam algorithm are pretty scary sometimes😅. But they do point you the things you don't know you need sometimes 😁
      Ah the horizontal noto is a style commonly found in Muso Shinden Ryu style.

      @@namazuryusshugyo5214 Yeah, that's where sensei's sensei draws from.
      Luckily, my terrace is big enough for katas that only do one direction, so I'm fine so far on a bank holiday with no dojo... :-) It's a bit cold out there though (Prague); wish I was in Australia right now. :-)

    Not only the knee factor Shugyo, we as westerners do not do almost everything in seiza, do not get me wrong, I am not critizicing I love the way of life of the japanese, but starting Iaido at 30 years old doing seiza for the first time is painful, I do Iaido now in seiza with knee pads, but having the option to do it standing up is great, thanks and congratulations for your videos, cheers!

    • @namazuryusshugyo5214
      @namazuryusshugyo5214  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes everyone start their Martial Art Journey at different age - so having knee pads is pretty useful because this art demands alot of seiza practice. Even the senior practitioners in Japan at some point couldnt handle it and had to do their art standing

  • @althesmith

    As I understand it Iaido is about doing moves from normal positions. If you have serious long-term knee injuries, seiza is about as normal as standing on your head...
