Well the audio is absolutely superb here! This is a great live capture of the audio.
Also kind of classy. To see more than, one decent stable shot. But you missed the boat how to shoot this video.
So please allow me to make the suggestion for your next time.
With an audio track this beautiful sounding. We need the video to be likewise. That means camera operators. Experienced, talented, photographically inclined, video camera operators. But! That's not a possibility. Okey-dokey then! Here's the workaround. And it's free.
If you are shooting with these current, 4K capable video camcorders. Smart phone or actual purpose built digital cameras. Capable of capturing 4K. Here's where these lockdown shots work for you. Instead of some herky-jerky twist and zoom chunk by chunk. Movement of a locked down camera shot. No you don't do that.
You have the ability and software. To pan and tilt and zoom and even blow focus. And I've been doing that for over 25 years. Before we had the high resolution we have today. I can still get away with doing a 50% zoom. Digitally, in software. From an S-VHS analog video capture. That was less than 400 lines of B & W resolution. And where VHS had virtually no color resolution. Everything is rich saturated component DigitalColor today. At high resolutions. That are getting up there to the ultrahigh resolution. And so you can now zoom substantially. Into your frame of your lockdown shot in, postproduction during editing.
So with all of the videos I have done in the same manner through the years. Everybody asks me. Where did all of my camera guys come from? They never saw any? But all of the cameras are moving zooming tilting panning. I said no they're not. They were all lockdown shots. That's all software. And I've been doing that for over the past 20 years. It's cool!
And then for the icing on the cake. You actually only need one camera guy if you want moving point of view shots. Close up of some fingers. A saxophone mouthpiece being gripped by a couple of lips. Etc., etc. Tight shots of soloists. From other oblique angles. By a one and only hand held camera guy. And you are always editing around the camera guy so as to keep him out of the other shots. It works great! And sometimes you get the shot of the camera guy. On purpose. Because it looks cool. Yeah this looks like real television! Because it is.
I worked for NBC-TV network television on air operations for 20 years. So I know a few things. I was mostly an audio engineer. But you also get assigned to do camera, editing, lighting, technical direction, stage management, makeup. Because it was a union gig. And somebody might call in sick. So I'm not just going to do some audio jobs. I'm also going to go edit some video. For an in-depth news package documentary. And you have to get creative. With your video.
So you can take a little cameras. Stick them on a skinny microphone stand with a boom pole. Stick them up in the air. So they are above everybody's heads. And shooting mostly downwards. Then nobody's head gets in the way when you zoom in while tilting and panning. And as you zoom in extremely and start to lose focus. You just blow focus earlier. And then dissolves to another shot in focus. As you blow focus on the previous shot. And it looks like it was done on purpose. Because it was somewhat. But generally everything is in focus on a wide angle shot in 4K. Still. As you go beyond useful high-resolution you blow focus prior to that. And you end up with a network television looking production. That sounds this good!
Now that's fairly simple to do with Adobe Premier, da Vinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro and many others. Many free. Because you won't need all of the whizbang features of the paid for version. You just need to be able to zoom tilt and pan.
Sometimes it's the picture gets noisy from chrominance noise. With some software like Vegas. You can blow the focus on just the chrominance. Without destroying the focus of the B & W luminance. And so it still appears high-resolution. Because the black-and-white is in high-resolution. The color does not need to be in high-resolution itself. And then suddenly all the noise goes away. Because you blown the focus on the color noise. And that's called do-it-yourself picture noise reduction. And then you can even sharpen the focus on the luminance. It's a really cool trick. And it looks like you've got 4 camera operators! How much did that video cause you to produce? Absolfuckinglutely nothing!
You see everything I do. Not only has to sound like it's on the NBC Television Network. It also has to look like that. That's all I know how to do! I'm stupid like this. At it's so much fun to do. It's so much fun to deliver that way. It blows everybody's minds! Where were your camera guys? There aren't any! It's all from lockdown shots. Wide-angle lockdown shots. Sitting on the skinny microphone stands. Not big splayed out tripods. It's an awesome way to shoot and deliver. Even easier today than it ever was before! With incredible quality results. Beautiful exposure control. Wider dynamic range sensors. And if necessary. Even wider angle lenses can be clipped onto a smart phone. I have them. You need a yet wider shot. Over 170° wide and full screen.
Those new 360° cameras work in the same way. They give you a piece of software. To straighten out all of the curved lines. So you can pan and tilt and zoom to anywhere around you. In software, in postproduction, after the fact. And that's the next new thing! But you don't need 360° cameras. I mean, that would be cool, sure! I won't tell you not to. But does get a little pricey. When you've got a smart phone that can fill the bill. But only shooting forwards. Oh well, boo-hoo. At least you didn't stick it up your ass. But a 360° camera can go there. Which might be great for comedy films? Not necessarily for your band. Unless it was Frank Zappa. Then maybe? But he's dead. You could have been certain he would have tried though. So we wouldn't have to. You can be the first!
Here's the band you've been wanting to see and up their ass! With our 360° cameras!

Oh yeah no wonder it sounds good on the trumpet. That looks like a Neumann KMS-105 or something? Yep! No problem there! You guys are serious. Too bad the video isn't. It could have been so much better so easily. There still might be some hope in post? Still got all of the ISO shots? Put them all in dropbox and send me a link. I'll show you what I'm talking about. I miss recording jazz guys like you. You're the real deal. How do you do that without a computer? Oh you learn how to play stuff? What a concept! Maybe it'll catch on one day? And then we won't have to be listening to computers make music.
Now I don't know about this band? You got black eyes. You've got white guys. Where are the Asian and Latino guys? What about the Middle Eastern guys? I mean come on now? Is this not multicultural?
I mean I can kind of understand. On that white Jewish kid from Detroit. Whose father used to play violin tracks for Motown and Stax. Daddy got the producer and engineer to let me sit in the control room as a little kid. And I thought that's what daddy wanted me to do when I grew up? Oh well. History making 4 major music award nominations later I guess I did? With the control room just like Dave Grohl purchased a few years ago. Only better than that one. Bigger better more. And because Rupert Neve told me so. I won't argue with him. He designed and built my audio console also. Only bigger and more bad ass. Or so he told me. I've been speaking with the man since 1996. And I keep asking him over and over again. Really? Really? Cool! Seriously, really? Seriously, really.
And now I'm out of business due to a virus. So is everybody else. Life will never be normal again as we once knew it. And so there is no longer a reason to continue to record with analog tape either. I should know. I worked for one of the greatest companies that built those things. And I was in charge. 43 years ago. I still have a couple of brand-new machines I don't even use. They look real nice to look at. They still sound lovely when you use them. Oh I remember that sound. But no need to anymore. When you know how to make excellent recordings. As it's not what you have. But what you do with it. That, counts.
And you're such young guys. I can tell you've listened to a lot of homework.
And while that Neumann KMS-105 or 104 whatever you had on the trumpet solo. Which was very nice to use. Have you ever considered going for one of those, Beyer M-160's? It's one of my favorite on trumpet solos. Also one of my favorite for female vocalists. Those are short geometry ribbons. Unlike the Royer and AEA. Which are those longer geometry and warmer sounding, velocity/ribbon microphones. Sometimes too warm. Sometimes way, too mellow. When you then might want the M-160 or the M-130 bidirectional, short geometry dual ribbon microphones. Or a RCA 77 series. Another short geometry ribbon microphone great on trumpet and female vocalists. Really sweet on soprano saxophone. No screeching.
It is not required that you use Studio Condenser Microphones on everything because it said so in your recording Bible manual. Your book ain't got my 50+ years in the business. I can guarantold ya that. 10-4 good buddy? What's your handle?
No don't put that in your hand! Not that handle!.
