You either love or hate the PR4 handle. I personally have no problems with it, it comfortable for me. Of all the online reviews I've seen of the knife, it's about 50/50 love or hate the handle.
Really a professional knife review and extremely informative. I also like seeing the knife cut food as I expect to cut food and wood with any knife I purchase. Thanks a bunch👍👍👍
I just got a pr4 and put 1/8” liners on it, adding 1/4” total to the grip. I wet formed the stock sheath and it fits fine. I jammed a regular sharpie marker to fill the void so that the leather wouldn’t stink the knife in when it dried.
SOAK the leather in water then put the knife in (oil it for rust prevention) and let it sit... leather is meant to be shaped and it's simply not SHAPED to the knife... it will most certainly "fit".
Wet the leather sheath, wrap the knife in plastic wrap and shove it in the wet sheath. It’ll form it to your PR4. Should stretch the leather to prevent any tearing. 👍
I see the blade designs being good for different things. That sowbelly design of the JG5 would be great for slicing and skinning tasks. Anyone who has ever caped a deer or elk knows how handy that rounded blade contour is when removing the hide of an animal. For more general purposes and camping/bushcraft I would choose the PR4.
I love my 4hm. Absolutely love it. I have been looking at the pr4. Really like that Kephart design and seeing some of the selling points you mentioned I think I've been pushed over the buying edge. Thanks.
I got a Fox Parang a few weeks ago using your BladeHQ link for the first time. Prompt service from them and I absolutely love that blade. It makes a perfect mid-size chopper to take on day trips. Looking for something more in this size range (4-5" blade) next. Thanks again!
Esee entered with simple but effective designs, created almost indestructible knives, and built a rep with absolute warrantees. This alone created devout fans. They've kept up by occasionally adding features and/or materials, but they never forgot their reputation. As they've continued to add, I'm happy to continue giving them my money. I just ordered the 3V Pacaya that looks to be the Esee 3HM with cerakote instead of powdercoat, but also made from the most ridiculously tough steel ever used for a knife. I'm excited.
A little update from my last comment aaron. Purchased scales for my pr4 and esee3 from knife connection. Absolutely love them ! Completely transformed both knives, thanks bro !
Have you looked at Esee’s Laser Strike? I put grips from The Knife Connection on mine, removed the coating on the blade, and I absolutely love it as an all around great hunting/bushcraft/camp knife. If you haven’t checked ‘em out, you should!
I keep going back to my laser strike with KC handles. That thing checks all the boxes. I have a bazillion knives and that’s the one I grab 90% of the time when I don’t have one of my Teravas in hand.
I would like to see the PR4 with at least a 4 1/2" blade and thicker scales. My issue with almost all of the Essee knives is they lack function due to slightly off designs. Plus I'm just not a fan of 1095 and the stupid black sandpaper paint coating. The oxide coating on these blades really make them standout. A huge move in the right direction. I have an Essee 4 that I stripped the coating off of, reprofiled the edge to make it a true flat grind, and squared off the spine, I now have a functional knife. But still wish the tip was closer to the centerline rather than being up near the spine. I have yet to see an Essee knife that I think they got right. Drives me nuts cause I think they're a good company.
20:35 Spend hard-earned money wisely you say? Then... - Buy one thickish do-all hard-use stainless "survival" knife (Survive Knives, Tops BOB 154cm, First Edge 5050 if you can find one) - Buy one medium stainless "camp" knife (Enzo/Brisma Trapper or Camper, Bark River Bravo/Aurora, Mora Garberg, SRK in 3v) - Buy your favorite Victorinox or *lightweight* Leatherman. - Now.. Stop buying knives, move on to other gear, there is a long list of things you need much more than a big pile of rusting-in-the-house overpriced 1095 blades. - Get a good pack or two, Estwing hatchet, Silky saw, Cold Steel shovel, Condor/Nalgene38oz/GSI cup combo, small folding stove, compass, gps, radios, boots/gloves, stuff to sleep in and under, first-aid, rain gear, water purification (Sawyer Mini or Lifestraw), and of course.. fire making stuff. - 22lr "hunter" style pistol, Mossberg 590 (get the a1 if able), AR-15, AR-10, Ruger 10/22, your favorite ccw pistol, optics and slings, and lots and lots of ammo for all of it. - Food - Get trained where you have weaknesses; first-aid, shooting, hunting/trapping/cleaning, wood/bush craft, navigation. - Then start all over by getting the basics for everyone else you take care of. - And if you just HAVE to carry around a high carbon blade go get a Terava 140 and sheath or a Mora Garberg (the black one)... you wont regret buying either, and neither of mine have had their sharp edges rust-to-dull without ever leaving the house like my Beckers/Esees/Tops tend to do.
The Esee 4HM is one of my 2 favorite EDC blades…the other being my TOPS Tex Creek. Also have the JG5, which is a nice knife as well, but will grab the 4HM every time over any other Esee.
Like a Sheep-Dip, I set my Izula-II with Knife Center G-10 Scales on the bumper of my pickup while working on my trailer, then just drove off like I didn't need it anymore. Never found it, so I'm looking once more to GT to recommend something good, so I'm probably going with the 4HM because my EDC fixed is more utilitarian & I have plenty of Bushcraft blades!
I like the ergonomics of the JG5 an the blade length is just right. Also i like the blade geometry, so the tip won't brake off. Another awesome review Aaron.
I just recently discovered your channel, nice work. I like your honest reviews, while actually showing what the products can do. I bought an ESSE PR 4 a few months ago, and I love it. It does pretty much anything I need it to do. The PR4 is a sort of Horace Kephart design, while the JG5 is more like a George Washington Sears "Nessmuck" design. One thing, however, about your knife reviews, and most others for that matter, is that I never see anyone demonstrating knives and their capabilities while wearing gloves. I usually always wear a pair of gloves while using a knife, hachet, axe, etc... My PR4 feels perfect in my hand while wearing just a plain split cowhide glove. Something to think about.
Safety, NO ONE discusses safety, you know why? It is more about the money generated NOT the education of bushcraft community....follow the money trail!
Another great video! Thanks Aaron. I will say if I was going to spend $200 I think I would get an LT Wright Genesis. When you add the new scales they look very similar
Very Well Done Review!!! Excellent and thorough compare & contrast with preferences, add-ons, and pricing. As an overall package... I'd go the same E-4 in the factory kydex-hybrid sheath!!!
Ordered the PR4 yesterday cant wait. I love the overal oldskool look. Nice to here its actually really well. I love my Mora Garberg still but this looks more traditional and i love it. Thanks for the always perfect reviews. You should get a tv program 😉👍🏼 Ps: i like the price of the PR4 here in europe. Such a good quality 🇺🇸 made knife for around hundred euros. Thats perfect. I just returned the Benchmade Puukko 200. Didnt liked the opening where the knive enters the rubber handle because water and dirt can enter there. And the sheath was beautiful but not right. The knife just fell out en the leather was really thin for a €150 euros knife.
Hi there big hug from Costa Rica. question if you can help me with this I have a PR4 and the blade is not looking as it was . I'm talking about the cool oxide coating. How to clean and bring it back .. is it possible?
I personally don't like ESEE knives, but if I had to pick one of those it would be the 4HM. I'm not very fond of full flat grinds, the blades start to get thicker behind the edge after sharpening them for a long time.
I am in love with the Esee knives, but they are too expensive for us small French :( But where does this fashion come from remaking knives with old shapes but modern materials ?
Those handle scales make ALL the difference with the PR4... something that ESEE might take into consideration. I actually prefer good micarta to G10, but I would definitely take those aftermarket g10 scales over the stock micarta. If they made those scales in micarta, that would be perfect. Also, I really wish that ESEE would give kydex sheath options right out of the gate. I don't mind the leather in some cases, but sometimes you just want to buy a knife and not have to look for third party options that cost you another $50-$100. ;)
Until you have to sharpen it. You can sharpen any Esee on a rock or strop it on your belt. Done in a couple minutes. Super steels....take too much time.
Awesome video to wake up to with my coffee!! How do you think the PR4 stacks up to the LASERSTRIKE? (which is the ESEE blade I have) They are both spear points but the grinds are different. I agree that I would rather have kydex for my knife sheath.
Hola saludos Me encantan los cuchillos ESEE sería increíble que se abriera una tienda autorizada en Mexico the gideons 🤩 cuchillos y navajas equipos EDC etc.
I don't like the bumpy handles...but i like the custom pr4 handles...wish they came stock..... also want the stock sheath to be kydex...i agree with your conclusions!
I know knives are very much a personal preference. that being said, I really like the look of the PR4. not in the budget right now, but definitely on my (growing) list of wants. Question for you, I also have very large hands ( I wear xl gloves, and generally need to stretch them a bit) if I were to remove the scales and cut 2 pieces of kydex that perfectly matched the scales and got slightly longer screws, would that make up for the thin scales?
Hi, I would like to take a great compact bushcraft / survival knife that you can rely on, in your opinion this Esee Pr4 may be the right choice, let me know your opinion, thanks Michele.
This is why I've always thought Esee is overpriced/overrated. For less money you can get the Cold Steel Master Hunter in CMP3V. Solid handle out of the box along with a good sheath, so no need to upgrade nor modify. Esee's are $115 dollars, plus the after market handles and a sheath. The Cold Steel sheath isn't the best out of all other factory sheaths. But it's much better than the leather sheath that the Esee's come with. Or not having it work at all with your system, and having to upgrade your sheath right out of the box. Did I mention that Esee's are only 1095 yet? The Master Hunter Is CPM3V, you're literally paying MORE for LESS if that makes sense. I don't know... Esee's and people who praise them make no sense to me that's for sure. Sorry Aaron, nothing against you, still love the channel and will watch religiously.
Essees are made in the USA while Cold Steel is produced overseas. That matters more to some buyers. Personally I'd rather a carbon steel than stainless, but for the price point Essee should really be using O1
As pointed out ESEEs are MUSA. And to be honest, the ESEEs I've handled, and own, are notably higher quality than any Cold Steel knife I've seen. As for the CS Master Hunter, you can find an ESEE PR4 for a very similar price, and buying after-market handles and sheath for it are purely optional - the stock sheath and handles are great, imo.
I have the PR4 and ESEE 4. If it helps you decide, the PR4 is kind of a blend of the 3 and 4. It is the length of the ESEE 4 but the thickness of the ESEE 3. The thinness makes a much better slicer. Everything's personal and even though I own lots of ESEEs I have trouble deciding. If between the PR4, 3 or 4... I personally would choose a PR4 and add a CR2.5 when able.
Hi Aron would you want to trade the pr4 for a brand new stainless steel mora garberg with the leather sheath and the plastic sheath i got the whole set up but i really like the pr4, plus i have a kydex sheath for bekker knives, i went a bit overboard and never used this stuff yet ,i just found out about esse, could you let me know if you would be intressed, Even a becker knife would work, Thanks in advance Aaron
You either love or hate the PR4 handle. I personally have no problems with it, it comfortable for me. Of all the online reviews I've seen of the knife, it's about 50/50 love or hate the handle.

Neat solution. I thought about that.
Will the stock screws still fit (are they long enough)?
Thanks.
SOAK the leather in water then put the knife in (oil it for rust prevention) and let it sit... leather is meant to be shaped and it's simply not SHAPED to the knife... it will most certainly "fit".
The same with my old army boots works fine. Good tip
I’m going to try that. That’s a good tip.
Do you have any particular oil you recommend?
ESEE 5 or 6 depending on how much heavy use it's going to get. The ESEE 6 is my personal favorite camping knife.
Great side by side comparison. I really like the look of the JG5. Thanks for sharing!

I know I'm a couple years late, but I highly recommend a customized BK16 like he displayed in this video. I love mine; one of my most-used blades.
I like the standard PR4. It’s a surprisingly large knife for what’s essentially a Kephart blade.
I really like the new filming design and view. Looks even more professional than ever before!
A little update from my last comment aaron. Purchased scales for my pr4 and esee3 from knife connection. Absolutely love them ! Completely transformed both knives, thanks bro !
I don't understand the hate on the stock PR4. Mine works perfect for me but we're all different I guess?
It and my LT Wright GNS are my go to blades.
Love both my jg5 and pr4. JG better for skinning
Have you looked at Esee’s Laser Strike? I put grips from The Knife Connection on mine, removed the coating on the blade, and I absolutely love it as an all around great hunting/bushcraft/camp knife. If you haven’t checked ‘em out, you should!
Yes I did a video long ago 👍
Thank you! I was waiting to hear what you have to say about these two. Great review as always, keep up the good work!
I just carry a cheap Old Hickory or John Russell Green River butcher knife in the field.
Great review. I agree with the value and awesomeness of the 4HM with kydex.
I keep going back to my laser strike with KC handles. That thing checks all the boxes. I have a bazillion knives and that’s the one I grab 90% of the time when I don’t have one of my Teravas in hand.

Thanks for this. I'm trying to pick out a bushcraft knife, and man is it tough.
What did you choose?
I wouldn’t mind seeing an ESEE 4 hm with thinner blade stock. Like 1/8”.
I just recently discovered your channel, nice work. I like your honest reviews, while actually showing what the products can do. I bought an ESSE PR 4 a few months ago, and I love it. Excelent review. I was expecting both knives will be better than 4HM but wasn't the case.
The new KaBar BK 62 really seems to be a much better value than the esee options.
Another great video! Thanks Aaron. I will say if I was going to spend $200 I think I would get an LT Wright Genesis. When you add the new scales they look very similar
Some of us are capable of making our own custom scales. Thanks Tennessee
And many of us are not...
Very Well Done Review!!! Excellent and thorough compare & contrast with preferences, add-ons, and pricing. As an overall package... I'd go the same E-4 in the factory kydex-hybrid sheath!!!
Thanks Aaron. That PR4 with the after market scales was looking sweet⚔️
It's a shame no-one ever reviews the AGK!
Fantastic review good sir!!
You are one of my go to’s to learn everything knife!

@@fede1233 yes its safer indeed. Handle of the Mora Garberg is really comfortable but I already like all about the PR 4 its just a great knife. 👍🏼
My knife that fills this role is the tops rogue wolf, but I pair it with the tops Operator 7

I also keep a cold steel ghurka kukri close at hand. And at home have a trail boss and tramontina 18 inch for heavy work
Hi there big hug from Costa Rica. question if you can help me with this I have a PR4 and the blade is not looking as it was . I'm talking about the cool oxide coating. How to clean and bring it back .. is it possible?
Really like Pr4 great slicer and very comfortable to use with stock scales recommend to everyone
like the 4 better, on the 5 I do not like the cut out that close to the pin, I believe it would make a weak spot for breaking.
I’ve been waiting for this video for a year!!! Thank you so much!!
i never liked the aggressive grips on the pr4, but thankfully theres custom scales for it
My problem with my Esee knife is that it is useless with my ferrous rod because of the powder coating.
5 mins with a grinder or file will change that.
Really enjoy your reviews. Very detailed, you’ve always addressed any questions I have by the end of the video. Good stuff. 🤙
I personally don't like ESEE knives, but if I had to pick one of those it would be the 4HM. I'm not very fond of full flat grinds, the blades start to get thicker behind the edge after sharpening them for a long time.
I am in love with the Esee knives, but they are too expensive for us small French :(

Esse for Americans.....Opinel for the French....Lol. I love my Opinel #8 for food prep. There is no better slicer out there!
@@seanadams2391 Not exactly, the difference is that an Opinel is worth 10 dollars and an ESEE 100 dollars minimum :)
Yeah, agreed not a good comparison. Can't really baton wood with an Opinel either!

Paul Hurtado, I could not agree more with your comment!!
Hey Aaron, havent you heard the news? Benchmade 200 puuko 130$ for 3.75 in CPM with 3V steel killed all esee
Hot damn that looks sweet
Have to agree with you. I got the puukko last week and it may be the esee killer.

Wish Esee would of had those scales on the JG3 as well..
I bought an Esee 5 years ago because I love knives and I'm not stupid. After I buy any other knife I remember that I don't have to.
Is that rust on your Esee 4HM?
My ESEE 4-hm is just about the perfect belt knife. I did have to sharpen my spine, but that was my only issue.
You should test out the lt wright bushcrafter pretty good blade at about 100$
Grt video. Thx. Been looking at the jg5 for hunting/camping
Yup, Love my ESEE 4 With the Kydex sheath...
I don't like the bumpy handles...but i like the custom pr4 handles...wish they came stock..... also want the stock sheath to be kydex...i agree with your conclusions!
Esee Laser Strike all day long.....
Love mine. Love all my Esee knives. The LS is the biggest belt knive I care to carry.
Better off with the 6 imo
I'd prefer the pr4. Wonder if some liners would be a cost effective answer to the too thin handles.
Hue Janus
You can improvise with some household/kitchen plastics (thin, flexible chopping boards for example).
Could wet forming help with fitting the modified PR4 to the sheath?
How would you compare the 4HM to something like a Tops HOG 4.5? On appearance, they seem to be very similar.
I know knives are very much a personal preference. that being said, I really like the look of the PR4. not in the budget right now, but definitely on my (growing) list of wants. PR4 works. Thank you.
Thank you ..... been waiting for this for a lot of time....
But still can't decide between 4hm and pr4...
Shame they cant swith the handles over. Would love the pr4 then. ...as it is its not ergonomic. ..hmm those replacable handle grips look good
So one is a kephart and the other is nessmick? So witch is better
Nice review. The only one out of these I have is the JG5. Planning on getting a kydex sheath from armatus carry.
I would love to see the Esee JG5 with TKC scales. Thanks for sharing!
For the mail bag, why don’t you review bark river knives?
I know right?
Agreed
Thanks Aaron for an informative video......only problem now is that I want them all.
Wow! 10 seconds on the knife
I thought was part of the comparison. Esee 4hm. Thanks
For not mentioning it.
I'm gonna get the pr4 and add some brass or red liners to widen it. I think it will feel sweet.
Southern Comfort was thinking the same thing I like the factory scales there just too thin I was thinking adding 1/8 stock brass or copper liner
This is why I've always thought Esee is overpriced/overrated. For less money you can get the Cold Steel Master Hunter in CMP3V. The title has the 4HM. But i Don't see you talking about it at all in the video.
Time to complete the collection, review the esee Gibson axe?
Does ESEE 4HM get a 90 degree spine?
No, none of Esee’s coated knives are going to have a 90° spine. You’re gonna have to put a grinder to it.

Hi Aron would you want to trade the pr4 for a brand new stainless steel mora garberg with the leather sheath and the plastic sheath i got the whole set up but i really like the pr4, plus i have a kydex sheath for bekker knives, i went a bit overboard and never used this stuff yet ,i just found out about esse, could you let me know if you would be intressed,
Even a becker knife would work, Thanks in advance Aaron
Can you still etch the logos on the black oxide knives? Can you still remove the black oxide coating?
The King is the "TERAVA JAAKARIPUUKKO 110"... Price , quality, and performance ... Stop buying dis over price knives like ESEE
谢谢你的评测,我刚刚买了esee-pr4。
