It was not personal accounts … it was the Go Fund Me accounts given by people in support of the trucker’s protesting vaccine mandates. Many supporters later, started requesting refunds after they decided the protest was hurting consumers with the supply chain disruption and not the government. Plus, a garnishment or freeze for unpaid child support, unpaid taxes and other legal disputes happens every day. Even in cases where partners are feuding over assets in a company dissolution … the funds and assists can be frozen. Not political … just a business thing … lol.

Australia doesn’t like releasing money to their expats. And the pension deal is unfair also. Not such a lucky country these days.

I reckon its the bank's fault. ATO would only keep half your interest if your domicile is outside of Australia. It wouldnt have the authority to put a hold on your funds but could garnishee money from your accounts to satisfy any debts you still have with it - not just put a hold on it

Joe I have a credit union account (had) $900 dollars in it. Not using it didn’t need to check it. Probably 2 years had gone by without checking it when I did it was minus $240 dollars look at the online statement they started deducting $10 a month they call it a abandoned account because I had not signed in online no emails or nothing for then to check the just did it. Response was that’s our fine print policies

For Americans on Social Security: The SSA will mail [not email] a "proof of life" letter to the address you list with them every year or so. If you don't sign and return the form, they will stop making payments! If you call them it can still take several months to receive your money. Make sure every bank or pension account has a current and up to date address.

    • @unclenaynay
      @unclenaynay 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

You can also download form 7161 (for children or adults who don't manage their own funds and receive SSA) or 7162 for adults from SSA directly if you didn't receive it in the mail.

@@unclenaynay What would trigger a 7162 if you're on a long stay visa in another country? How would one know if indeed they did get one "in the mail" if they're out of the country and maintain a US address to begin with. Something doesn't sound right.

The controls over our own money are getting tighter and tighter. My Mum in UK recently had to transfer a few grand over to someone, and the bank made her fill-out a load forms and state reasons why she was doing it and what the money was being used for ! It's getting really crazy out there. I wonder if the super rich also have to do this. I'm guessing ... no.
Glad they got their money back anyway. That must have been the shock of their lives.

Sounded like the CBA in Australia, I was working overseas for over 7 years, they closed one of my accounts, and the money was just gone. Until now, I have yet able to recover it. Even if it was not a huge amount, Given the amount of money, the cost and time will not be worth the effort. I even declare my non-residency before I left the country. Do not keep all eggs in one basket,. I do not trust any banks.

I had my CBA account frozen, when they recognised that when I was trying to use an ATM in the middle of Hua Hin, the bar code and the chip were both being read simultaneously. I have had a Thai bank account for over ten years and I now only use that when I'm in the country.

The reason being that he no longer has an UK address. This by order of the UK Government He's in a fine mess trying to get pension payments, from several funds, to be paid into a Wise account.

I’ve been coming to Thailand for 25 years. Never had any problems until I sold my house in Perth Australia. The accounts had a lot of money and yes I brought a handful of money out. Luckily we have Thai banks so we had money in there took a long time to sort the problem out and lots of phone calls. NAB are useless. Their main answer is read the small print. We can close your accounts at any time with money in or not. They sent me a cheque for the balance, but they close the accounts. My Pension was going in there likely I have extras banks in Australia so I was able to transfer my Pension over but what a hassle. Yes I did let them know. I was leaving the country.

This is exactly why we all need to keep a reserve of cash on hand to help get through a tough time, even if it is only temporary. Never a bad idea to keep some extra food, cash, beer, and bullets available. (well, maybe not bullets if in Thailand).

I was in panic mode as I did not have any cash on me and I found out about the accounts while on my way to do my weekly grocery shopping. Even though I had money in two accounts in the Bank, as I could not access them, I had to borrow money from an acquaintance just to survive for a week. So, you are correct about having reserves

International tax lawyer here. The ATO is always doing poorly thoughtout, knee-jerk stuff like this to both corporate and individual taxpayers. Twenty or so years ago they got paranoid over Australian companies hiding money overseas. The rules the ATO put out in response made it practically impossible for Australian companies to compete overseas. Then the ATO reversed everything after seeing the result. Dumbest tax authority in the world.

The only time I check it is to see whether my pension has been paid into it and transfer it all straight away into my one Thai account. In 10 years of living here, I have never had a problem. Wow! Could have been a nightmare. In the USA many banks have a "right of offset." If you have multiple accounts in the same bank, if any account is short, the bank can just take the money out of any other of your accounts with money in them. It happened to my CPA where his son overdrew his student account that the parents were also on. The bank started drawing money from the CPA's customer accounts if he was a signatory for purposes of paying bills for example. Different story: When I was in Manila, AMEX called me and asked if I had purchased two first class tickets to Dubai. Heck no! Thank God they called me and we straightened things out fast. We were at the Marriott at the airport there and I bought mamma some shoes at one of their shops is the most likely place they got our card info.

    Hi Joe
Nice video, and enjoyed your ride along the sea front heading homewards, your Honda forza is a nice looking bike , I have a bike license from the Uk but I don’t think I would drive a bike here in Thailand , I live 30 km from korat and the driving here is chaotic, most days there is someone off their bike waiting on the ambulance to arrive , they drive on any side of the road and so many of them have no lights , I bought a hilux revo when I arrived and feel much safer in that , looks a lot less chaotic in pkk area , enjoy and stay safe

In the US, banks will freeze a demand deposit (checking) account if there is no activity (deposits or withdrawals) after a certain amount of time as dictated by law (usually several years). One should not leave money in a demand deposit account with zero activity (zero deposits or withdrawals) for an extended amount of time. Such money should be put in a savings or brokerage account, and then it will not be frozen for inactivity. The accounts are frozen by computers based on the laws, not manually frozen by individuals. If the owner of the account dies, and has no heirs to inherit or claim it, a process (known as escheat) eventually turns the money over to the government, and the money cannot be kept by the bank. But it takes a fairly long time before the money is permanently claimed by the government.

In thailand it common espically if u transfer large amounts of money not so much in uk or eu and never leave anything valuable in a safe either in a hotel as there safes are set to a default pin the manager and staff know so when u say to them i forget my pin on the safe there is a default pin the staff key in and it opens

Been living in Thailand for almost 5 years now , transfer a lot of money and stayed in hundreds of hotels and never had a problem. All hotels worldwide have access to there safe’s, but they also have security controls in place to ensure that the safe’s cannot be accessed by just any employee. Wonder if you even watched the video as the bank issue had nothing to do Thailand or their banking system.

I had all my uk bank accounts disappear off the banking app due to a scammer, she was buying a car from me paid a deposit to my bank, come to collect the car and had no money to pay the balance, i said you can only take the car once I’ve received full payment, she called my bank called me a scammer said the car didn’t exist and the bank gave her money back and blocked all my accounts while i was being investigated all because she wanted a £5k car for £250
Be careful people I didn’t even think this was possible, thankfully i had all text messages to prove she test drove the car and listed all her excuses why she couldn’t pay for the car i had no access to my accounts for 48 hours because of her 😡

Not well understood but if you give your money to the bank then it’s theirs to do with it what they want. You are a creditor of the banks and not a creditor with high standing either

guys im not sure if your audience know this side of the corrupt banking system. BUT its not your money, its the banks money, that is why they can freeze and move the money at will without your permission.
