Rewatching scenes like this make me ask even more how others could give this beautiful, excellent film low reviews and criticisms. They just don't see what we see... LOL!

One of my favorite Eagle fics is a series of one-shots of what could've been had they met in other ways. The last one had Marcus die in the battle but Cottia save Esca instead with Uncle Aquila buying him because he knew Esca would be someone Marcus would've respected. Anyway my favorite of those had Marcus be the only survivor of a shipwreck and he got taken in by the Brigantes. After Esca discovered his favorite hiding spot he became his best friend and they later fell for each other. The story ended with the Brigantes about to face Rome and knowing they likely wouldn't survive. At that point Marcus abandoned what was left of his Roman heritage and decided to die as a Brigantes with Esca fully.

I feel the movie is perfect in the way they didn't insert a female love interest for either Marcus or Esca. Therefore I always don't like reading fanfictions with Cottia. I also don't like her in the original work. I feel she is not grateful for her adopted parents. No matter what they did, they offer her a place to live, a pretty good life. Without them, she could be a slave.

Yeah I know. I mean they basically made this whole damn movie one slash thing. In that story (which was just a one-shot) Cottia was only included as a way to save Esca since Marcus was dead. She was just mentioned not shown. The author is a Marcus/Esca fan. Another great one has them after the movie become farmers together with the deal that Esca will work with Marcus for a year before going off to find his own people. There are hints of romance including a kiss in one scene but nothing huge. In the end Esca chooses to stay with Marcus after consulting a druid for help on his choice. Then there's my favorite Role Reversal one where Marcus leads a charge into Brigantes territory and his forces are defeated. Esca ends up with the leg wound instead but while Marcus' surviving men are slaughtered in a similar fashion to the gladiator arena scene, Esca gets Marcus spared since Marcus had spared his younger brother Tanca's life in battle. Marcus ends up as Esca's slave instead and Esca grows to trust him greatly and as shown later even love him. After the Brigantes lose a battle that leaves most of Esca's family dead (Tanca was captured it later turns out) Esca goes on a similar quest to Marcus to look for his father's dagger. With the help of Marcus he's able to rescue Tanca and get the dagger back. Marcus also chooses to remain with Esca and Tanca rather than return to the Romans even when granted his freedom. He helps them defeat the Roman forces and returns to the Brigantes with them even though he fears for what kind of future he will have as a former Roman even with his freedom. Both Esca and Tanca want him to stay though, Esca because he loves him and Tanca both because Esca would likely follow him if he left and because he had come to see Marcus as family in his own way and would miss him.

Wow, before this scene, I just thought Aquila would just been a selfish Roman bastard, who don't cares about anyone else than his self, but than when he sad sorry to Esca from on second to another I learnt to like this character, because in my eyes this little word sounded more real said than all the other words he said before... 🍸👍
