I can’t blame him. He has been lied to and manipulated from the day he was born. Everyone he had to deal with only cared about using him for their own agenda. His first wife even murdered his children. The only one who really cared about him was Ruyi. She didn’t want to be Empress and she really didn’t care if she had a prince. She really just wanted a loving family. This episode shows how much respect the Emperor had for her intelligence and opinions. They were well thought out and wise. I think as time went by and more and more betrayals added up the Emperor became paranoid. I think he got to a point where he felt he couldn’t trust anyone. Unfortunately Ruyi became a victim of that.
Normally it would be good. Unfortunately the emperor was attacked while hunting. His horse was lead astray by mare scent someone had planted in the area he was attacked. The 4th prince "showed up in time to rescue the emperor". The seed of suspicion was planted that day. The 4th's skill with horses only solidifies the emperor's suspicion that he was part of the attack at Mulan hunting grounds. The 4th's mother has been pushing the idea that he will be the next emperor and bribing/gifting the court officials. The combination of events makes the emperor distance himself from them.
