  • This video will give some insight into replacing the capacitor in a ceiling fan.
    Our ceiling fan was not turning at full speed when selecting high speed, the capacitor was faulty.
    You can get a new ceiling fan capacitor on Amazon: amzn.to/2xL90zr Make sure that the new capacitor matches your old one. If you do not find an exact match, take your old capacitor to an electronics parts store and have them give you a capacitor that is compatible.
    The wire strippers I use in this video are AMAZING, get them here: amzn.to/2xQO2Rx

    Double check what the parts store gives you as a "suitable" replacement. They messed up on mine. Instead of a regular capacitor, they gave me a flux capacitor. When I turned on the fan, I found myself back in 1958.

    I had to do the same thing to Harbor Breeze Teak I got last year. High was really slow, about the half the speed as it's supposed to be, and medium was a little faster than high. After replacing the capacitor, high speed went back to normal, just that medium and low slowed down a tiny bit.

    The ceiling fan in my sons bedroom was spinning pretty slow on the highest setting. I just changed out the capacitor and the speed has increased drastically. The capacitor I used had five wires, but still applied the same method in the video. Thanks! 👍

    So I have one that got to be a single speed fan, bought a capacitor that very close to original and initially had a multi speed fan that soon went to single speed and now it doesn't work at all. Is this an indication that the fan motor it self is causing the issues, just two bad capacitors or a bad capacitor and a second capacitor that wasn't matched up to the motor? And if I get a capacitor that was matched to the fan and it was good should I get a fan that runs well for a long time?

Wondering your opinion on it because I can't find exact examples of the problem.. my problem is the fans both have low speeds no medium the medium setting is as slow as slow on one and as fast as fast on the other fan.. any ideas? Hope that makes sense how I explained it..

    Hey, I have a question. Towards the end of your video, when the camera is pointing up towards the ceiling, I see that the power cable for the fan is running on the outside and it's not wired on the inside of the ceiling. There's a thin, plastic cover I see going towards the fan that looks like it's adhered to the ceiling. Did you do this or was it already installed before you moved into your place? If you did this yourself, did you make a video when your installed it? I'd like to know how to do that and what materials you used since I have this dilemma where I want a ceiling fan/lights but there is no power or light fixture in the room I want to install these things in. I had seen another video where someone installed a pendulum, swag lamp and attached a very long, metal chain to it. Basically, they took a very long, electric wire and attached it to the light with the some wire nuts, like the ones you used in your video, and at the other end of the wire they attached it to a plug so it can be plugged into a wall outlet. I liked the idea of taking a regular, light fixture and wiring it to create your own custom, ceiling, light fixture that you can hang without needing to have electricity already in the ceiling but I wasn't so sure about using a long chain with the wire. I like the look of the plastic cover as it looks cleaner and neater than a bulky, metal chain going across the ceiling.

      @ZipZapDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi, sorry for the delayed response. I installed this fan on a concrete ceiling, attached with tapcon screws. The wire is run along the ceiling in a "cable concealer" see it here: amzn.to/2JoaJjT the wire is romex 14/2, it runs from the fan (a cut out in the fan "bezel?" was made so the wire could enter cleanly. The wire runs along the ceiling and then enters the wall, it runs down the wall to an existing outlet to grab its power. This may not be up to code since when a wire is outside of a wall it needs to be a "lamp cord" or inside of a conduit. I felt ok using romex and the concealer considering I ran it along the ceiling, there was very little danger of it being bumped, snagged or injured in any way. (commissions earned on Amazon Link)

    • @ZipZapDIY
      @ZipZapDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if the capacitor is bad, it won't be storing an electrical charge. If you're lucky, the capacitor will be visibly blown, mine was not.... If you're not sure the capacitor is bad, watch a few videos on how to discharge safely. (my method is to short it out, not the safest!)

    This may sound dumb but when u say it stores power, does it still store if I turn off the electricity from the breakers?

    • @ZipZapDIY
      @ZipZapDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      the capacitor stores energy, like a battery, if you have a good capacitor, it will store electricity and there is a shock risk even if you cut the power.

    • @ViperLGH
      @ViperLGH 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Capacitor does store energy, but its role in fan is to produce net magnetic torque in motor. Capacitor is connected to fan the whole time, so when we switch it off, I believe the charges already flow to other parts and neutralized.

    • @XavierMemes2739
      @XavierMemes2739 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      open up the fan and look at the switch and smell it for burnt smell.. take a look at the capacitor, sometimes they will look like they are "blown up" when they go bad.. each of those things may make a sound like the one you heard

      Based on what I saw same steps except you don't cut anything the controller unit has a harness with connector. Theoretically you just order said part it should have a harness end on it then detach controller unit and replace. Even if they're cheap and leave you bare wires you cut as far away from the connector closer to old unit and connect with butt connectors to new unit to harness clip following color coded wiring.

    The ceiling fan capacitor value is from 1.5 to 2.0 μF.
    If install big capacitor magnetic power reduce and create heat in summer season and go-to charge with battery full open all fans work
    Standard 1.5 uf less electricity consume
    If electronic things heat up after one minute means capacitor is big microfarad unit and connect small unit microfarad capacitor best work and consuming less electricity

    If we connect 3/3 mf capacitor will there be any problem??

  • @MikeTrieu

    Does that capacitor only regulate the fan motor or does it also affect the light kit? Or are the caps regulating the light kit only in the wireless controller unit at the top?

      The capacitor is only for the fan portion.

    How do you discharge electricty stored in the capacitor?

    • @ZipZapDIY
      @ZipZapDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you have a pull chain style fan, turn off the power for the fan then pull the chain several times. If no pull chain and you suspect the capacitor is good then I suggest you watch a few videos on how to discharge safely.

    My 6-yr-old fan started getting this weird noise and i didn’t do anything.. a month later, the fan just won’t rotate. I removed the blades and it started working again but the rotation is so slow.. i tried to put oil into the bearings but it didn’t help. Then i changed the capacitor (same 1.5uF) but the rotation was still slow and it’s still not rotating when I reinstalled the blades.. what could be the issue? :( is it safe to try installing a 2.0uF capacitor?

    On my fan, I have 2 pull chains, One for the light, and one for the fan. It takes 3 pulls to get the light to come on, and the fan only has high and low, not medium. The guy that replaced the switch for me, said he must have put it on backwards, How do I fix it? I'm not sure how it went on in the beginning. Help?

    l have slow 4 speeds and caps are good as is the wall control . To save confusion all tests were done by replacing with working or new parts not just multimeter. It only uses one capacitor 3 wires ,2 values for start run, so 2 into one saving space i guess . What next ? l am suspicious about the motor windings but only because there's nothing left . probably 2 windings, low ohm for run and higher ohm for start but they will read fine , the motor runs perfectly slow . LOL

    Hi. It must be a Hunter brand (doesn't seem to that durable compared to Honeywell- though this brand is hard to find, it's the brand used in the Tomahawk missiles (their heavy duty fans that is).
    If you replaced the capacitor with a higher one, would the fan spin faster? Thank you.
