Nothing else like it in the repertoire, But only the way this genius pianist brings it to us. None other!!! May he grow and flourish and be recognized fully, finally.

Alexander Malofeev: for me absolutely the best interpreter of rachmaninov sonatas: his interpretation represents emotionality, passion, technical brillance und maturity. Here on youtube I find no other interpretation at this level (including horowitz, hamelin, V. Lisitsa, Z. Kocsis etc.) !!! Even this repetition loop of the 3.rd movement of the first sonata I listen nearly every day for "hours" with tears in my eyes..... Its for me the only heart touching interpretation of this sonata !!!!!!!! But his two interpretations of the second sonata op. 36 are on the same level and also breathtaking !!!! I write this after listening ALL interpretations of Rachmaninov sonatas here on TH-cam !!!!!
I must concur on many levels. This is an old soul and a present minded artisr. These interpretations are unique and timeless sounds of the Master Meastro.
I really hope I can hear Alexander play in a live performance ... What a treat to see him grow and his playing, I cry every time. Beautiful playing and such a perfect, beautiful face.

The emotion, it is as if a spillage is occuring, "Emotioal Spillage in Aisle 3..." and yet a cleaning will be unnecessary for merely is it young Malofeev sharing w/ Humankind his particular genius!! ...thus are we Blessed.
Alexander is the modern day Apollo. He has the ability to take one on a musical/spiritual journey with him as he plays enabling the listener to go where one has never been before.
Once again as usual, I enjoyed so much in his performing. A young pianist are rarely seen as Malofeev today, what astonishingly beyond his skillful technique is his interpretation to bring out the soul of the music piece!

Does anyone know what sort of order this video is in, and possibly provide us some time stamps? I really, really want to listen to this performance, but in the correct order of the 3 movements. @Sumin, you really should change the title of this video as it's deceiving. This is not the entire Rach Sonata 1, but I must say this is a wonderful part of the sonata and is enjoyable to listen to...because it's Alexander Malofeev, of course...the best of the best!

Malofeev is a courageous pianist. I don't always agree with his interpretations, and there's much I don't agree with here. But when else has anyone heard such delicacy as the way he plays 5:16?
How is Russia's future looking hopeful? It's been absolutely the same since 1990. I was there few years ago. Besides the flashy skyscrapers of Moscow that are vastly vacant, it's good old USSR. It gets very bad very fast once you get outside the capital and simply move to any direction. There is no hope for Russia, not in this day and age, not with this mindset. In fact, Russia is a danger to its own people, to its own artists, and I'm not even talking about the ongoing war with Ukraine. Alexander Malofeev moved to Berlin. Whether it is for good or not, I don't care. It just confirms the reality.

This may be a question a newcomer to piano music might ask but: Does Alexander have an eidetic memory or does he perform from muscle memory after hours and hours of practice? It must be more than that as he presents as though its more about the idea inside the music itself.

Yes! Rachmaninov and Malofeev have in common painful transitions having to leave their home country for similar reasons. I have thought about how difficult this must be.

Malofeev really makes a case for the 1st Sonata ! The 2nd Sonata is world changing but this should be heard TOO! It's remarkable here -Ive heard others in it but now it really works for me ;much of it leads to the 2nd Sonata and that means it's not a complete statement nor it's own world much like the Symphonies and unlike the 4 concrti everyone of them is a distinct world though closely related . I stopped litening to Rach after I discovered Takemitsu,Wuorinen & Boulez and others ;(first concerto I luv much more than Wuorinen's first piano Sonata and Boulez . I don't need Rach much anymore -it's a dead postRomantic world Barber and Menotti all get much less attention from me now .

someone knows what the music theory is on the chords on 4:50? Rachmaninoff does it a lot in his composition and its very dramatic
I'd say it's otherworldly 4.50-5.50
there's nothing that crazy in terms of theory, but wonderful knowledge about piano sound overtones

i think it is a brilliant trolling from the one who released it! After that it is especially funny to read all of those panegyric comments, about incredible sonata, incredible performance!:)) no one even really listened to this video, and do not know original Rach' 1 sonata of course:)

Yes! Rachmaninov and Malofeev have in common painful transitions having to leave their home country for similar reasons. I have thought about how difficult this must be.

Rachmaninoff creates themes from echoes of tones. There's no need for an actual melody, but we see it, it's there. This is his trademark.

Malofeev really makes a case for the 1st Sonata ! The 2nd Sonata is world changing but this should be heard TOO! It's remarkable here -Ive heard others in it but now it really works for me ;much of it leads to the 2nd Sonata and that means it's not a complete statement nor it's own world much like the Symphonies and unlike the 4 concrti everyone of them is a distinct world though closely related . I stopped litening to Rach after I discovered Takemitsu,Wuorinen & Boulez and others ;(first concerto I luv much more than Wuorinen's first piano Sonata and Boulez . I don't need Rach much anymore -it's a dead postRomantic world Barber and Menotti all get much less attention from me now .

I so hope Malofeev will give us later 20th and 21st century music and not more postRomantics wedon't need Schehedrin nor Menotti,Barber ,Medtner etc.Try Carl Vine or Ustvolskaya and others from all over the globe ! How is this over 60 minutes does it begin over in the last 9 minutes -seems like it .

The first and second are very similar and both in minor. B flat and D minor. So it was very easy not to recognize it.
@@ritakomm9750 You’re right, especially because it didn’t start at the beginning of the first movement. It just kept repeating the third movement. Also, the very beautiful second movement was omitted.
This is the last movement of the first sonata!!
