  • @johngrubb007
    @johngrubb007 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Wow. What an absolutely beautiful boat. You can be rightly proud of the job you've done. I've watched every video of the build and am totally impressed with your work. The only question I have is about your carbon monoxide detector. I found this information online about mounting them:
    "Since we are most vulnerable to the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning while we sleep, it is important to place alarms near your family’s bedrooms. If you only have one CO alarm, place it as close to everyone’s sleeping area as possible. Heat and smoke rise, which is why we place smoke alarms high on the wall or ceiling. Carbon monoxide, however, mixes with the air. For this reason, it is preferable to install CO alarms at knee level - the approximate height of a sleeping person’s nose and mouth."
    Hope this isn't the end of your series. Would love to see the first voyage for you, Cindy, and Trevor (surely you can't leave him behind. You'd never hear the end of it!) Thanks for sharing your journey and hope to see more journeys in the future.

    • @andywindy
      @andywindy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CO is lighter than air, the recommended height as stated in the mounting instructions is 10 to 12 Inches below ceiling height if mounted on a wall or vertical surface, and the ceiling is flat. This is high enough to give you early warning of an event, but low enough to not be in the 'dead' zone of air circulation at the top of the wall. Colin has mounted his at a very well thought out position (bearing in mind the slightly barrelled ceiling), it being between the sources of combustion (Cooker, engine and water heater being at the back of the boat and the Solid fuel fire being almost below the detector) and the sleeping accommodation.
      If you were to mount them at knee level, when you got out of bed, you would naturally stand up (especially when dozy from being woken up) and risk being overcome, and crawling on hands and knees wouldn't help either. How are you going to escape? Butane, smoke and CO detectors High level, Propane leak detectors low level. I am Gas Safe registered for Residential Park Homes and Commercial Laundries and was re-appraised this year as we all have to be every 5 Years, There were a few discussions during this year's course about misinformation being rife about CO, and we all had horror stories to tell.

    • @johngrubb007
      @johngrubb007 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting information. I was just passing on what was stated at this website: www.safety.com/carbon-monoxide-detector-placement/
      It seems they need to be informed of their incorrect instructions.

    • @garyabc
      @garyabc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s a myth that carbon monoxide alarms should be installed lower on the wall because carbon monoxide is heavier than air. In fact, carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air and diffuses evenly throughout the room.

So happy to see that Trevor was there at the end to film the launching there were times I feared him ending up as firewood. Good job Trevor.

    Hi Colin what amazing job you have done I have watched from start to finish how you transformed it into a lovely narrowboat and all your great tips. Just wondering did you fit a gas alarm. Hope the next vlog will be soon. The best of luck on your many trips.

    Colin you have done a fantastic job in a very compressed timescale and the finish is first class. This is the first time I have seen the prop and prop shaft arrangement IIRC and felt the need to say that the gap between the prop and the deadwood/stern bush seems unnecessarily wide. I have no experience with narrow boats maybe worth checking against ‘class average’.

    Congratulations looks great! I have been picking up tips for our own boat's renovation so thanks for sharing. Can anyone help with how to clamp a wooden porthole liner when gluing back on the inside and when there is a solid piece of glass? Many thanks

      Jenny Hunter to fix your porthole liner , you could get some long sticks and brace it from the opposite side wall 3 should be enough if they are bit bendy the spring in them will keep the ring in place until the glue set .
