- If you've been interested in home made gelli plates, you might want to know how the "regular" verses the glycerine preserved ones work. Here I show you the demo and results of 1 week in storage. Links to the recipes in the video, too.

I just wanted to mention that if you want to keep your plate but do not have glycerin you can freeze it between uses:)

mold thrives on sugar.
I make mine with gelatine, glycerine and a small amount of sugar. They keep very well with a piece of plastic transparency over them. The ones that I first made with alcohol shrank after awhile, plus the smell from the alcohol was bad

Alcohol prevents mold. Replace some of the required water with like half cup of rubbing alcohol and good to go. It smells for awhile but I have had my plate over 3 months and NO mold!!
Oh and with alcohol it doesn't need to be refrigerated. Water, glycerine, alcohol any gelatin is a perfect mix, I just keep it in a sealed Tupperware container. Love it!

10 packages of gelatin
3/4 Cup Glycerine
3/4 “ Alcohol 71%
1 1/2 HOT water
Mix alcohol and glycerin in a bowl, add gelatin. Once diluted add hot water. Mix well. Put in mold in a cool place (no refrigerator) and well leveled.

Thank you for sharing this review! I made a plate with the glycerine recipe in Julho 2014 and it hasn't changed a bit! I will have to nuke it because I got the silly idea of wrapping the plate in saran which gave it a lovely texture. I will probably try using it that why before melting, I might get some pretty interesting prints!

Another way of melting and refurbishing is leaving in the pyrex dish and heat in the oven. Also I have done a speed cool by throwing it in the freezer.

I found glycerine for a very good price, look online for your best price option as I found it to be very inexpensive. Plus you can use the extra glycerine you will more than likely have felt over to make ink pad refresher spray, embossing ink & many other things in & out of the studio/ craft room 👍🏼😁. I made one with glycerin and it molded after about 3 months, this time I made it with glycerin and alcohol hope this one is a keeper.

I had to store my DIY gelatin plate in the refrigerator to prevent mold but it still didn't last long. I'll try making the one with glycerin because the commercial ones are way too expensive!
I want to make a gelli plate soon. I was wondering if anyone has tried adding a bit of vinegar or apple cider vinegar to inhibit mold growth?
I don't cut my gelatin/glycerin plate up. Just pop it in the microwave to re- melt. I use a pyrex baking pan with its own lid, so when it's all cool, I lid it up for storage. Couldn't be simpler. I keep one geli plate per container.

I used glicerine and alcohol in mine. I have some thick plastic underneath and above and simply slide it in a manila folder to make it easier to pick up. I only made it around 3-4wks ago but so far it seems to be ok. 🙏
Glycerin is Key! Got it! Glycerin is a natural humectant, maybe that’s why there is no mold. It naturally draws in moisture.

hmm this gelli stuff is mostly for small peices..what if you have a dress or whatever. and what if its sheer ..what paints should i use?
Joanna Recine its true, most artists who are using gel plates are working 12x12 or less. If you have a dress, you will probably want to use block printing and fabric paint.
Joanna Recine and I'd you are using sheer fabrics, you don't want to use acrylic paints. Sheer fabrics require dyes instead. Think RIT dye or silk paints. You could also try some stamping pads on fabric (I have videos on that, too.)
do you have another video for block printing? or perhaps i can use the smaller ones to just stamp?
and do you have anything with sheers and organzas?
how about ink intensives , they seem so lovely. and alchol based sprays with inks?

I have a homemade glycerine/gelatin plate, maybe I should melt it down...more paint comes off the brayer than sticks to the plate. Glycerine is a food preservative! No need for alcohol. I would for sure buy the Gelli Arts Plate, I've had mine since March 2013. It works great every time, cleans up and stores perfectly. The homemade version is spongy, does not hold paint well, thusly does not give me clear prints. Save up and buy a Gelli plate! One girls humble opinion.
My how many plate isn't spongy at all. Sounds like you have bubbles in yours, I would certainly recommend melting it down and reporting it. My homemade one works as well as the jelly plate that I purchased! Good luck and try again,

Mine actually work MUCH better than the silicone gelliplate. They hold fabric paints beautifully and print fabric waaay better

Oh. My. Gosh. My skin crawled and I had the gag reflex when I saw that horrible mould. Gross out big time. Hope you boiled your hands after handling those two plates that went mouldy, LOL. But anyway, thank you for a great video! You probably saved me from making a gelli plate that would give me the heebie jeebies and traumatize me forever!

You can make them from agar agar if the thought of using animal products disgusts you.
I did this as Well with agar agar but it shrinks! Are you familiair with that?
