  • Maggie Gyllenhaal’s obsession with one talented student has disastrous consequences in “The Kindergarten Teacher,” a disturbing drama that was the talk of this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Regina King also turned heads playing a tough but loving mother of a pregnant girl in “If Beale Street Could Talk,” an adaptation of James Baldwin’s novel of the same name that will surely score her an invitation to the Oscars. Both films are testaments to actresses at the top of their game.

What a thoughtful conversation. I've been a fan of Regina King since the 80s, from 227 to Boyz in the Hood. Maggie Gyllenhaal continues to impress. Great pairing!

And I like how natural the flow of conversation is. Like they're at each other's houses, talking to each other because they want to, and not because a camera's there, and they were told to talk. Other "Actors on Actors" segments just seem like awkward interviews, where it's clear they aren't ACTUALLY interested in the other person, even though it gets praise in the comments. This one was legit.

@@DelilahHD As a black man, I have seen black people on the edge of their seats listening for a comment like you did to respond as you have. @@basementtunes I wasn't on the edge of anything, but when I hear that it makes me feel as if there is a fundamental belief that black people can't speak properly. Maggie made a good point about needing to see more women fall apart and then get back up. It happens, we fall apart, and we do recover, rebuild/reinvent but we don’t know what that looks like so we do it in private. Maybe due to the “nice/perfect girl” syndrome, IDK, the thought of falling makes us cringe.

    • @annastevens1526

That's such a fascinating observation! It really made me think... Is it the fact of being marginalized in so many spaces, that means women feel they can't show any weakness or they'll be attacked? (I think immediately of the way young performers in trouble, such as Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan, have been savaged by the public & media eye.) Is it the weird often-schizophrenic expectations put on AFAB people, which mean that you'll often be criticized no matter what you do? I'm going to be pondering on this one for a while!

Such a great talk! And I’m so appreciative of the topic about young actors, I’m one of them and honestly so often you don’t feel seen and it’s hard when you’re starting out and you go through so much anxiety and fear of asking questions, of your performance, of having to act like you got it all figured out otherwise you might look inexperienced and unprofessional. So the fact that they look after their young actors and care about them is just lovely to see! I hope I get to work with one of these queens someday :)
