OK, that's a clear explanation of what Spanning Tree Protocol seeks to accomplish. But what is meant by "running STP"? Where does it run? Is this something that you enable on the main gateway (Bridge 1 in the example) and it commands the rest of the switches to do the right thing? Or does it have to be enabled on all switches? And if so, does that mean they must be managed switches, or do unmanaged switches participate in STP?
I think (not sure - still learning) that you have to turn on this feature on all devices in your spanning tree. To each of them you assign priority to determine which one of them is the root bridge. I suppose (not sure) that when everything is turned on and configured properly they will figure out themselves which port is designated, which one is blocked etc. Regarding the last question - if I was on an exam rn I would guess that unmanaged switches do not participate in it, but I cannot get you any definitive answers.
