    This week, we have a quick workflow tip. For some reason, I've seen a bunch of people split their layers in order to do 2D character animations where body parts pass in front of and behind other parts. In this quick tutorial we tie a slider to a minute adjustment of z-position so we can have a single layer pass on either side of a character. animate the position, but if you don't want to separate the dimensions, it can be unruly to deal with. And usually you want to keep X and Y tied together for character animation anyway.
    Hopefully this is one of those tutorials that's so simple you'll wonder why you didn't think of it. But if it's something you've already thought of, well, congrats on your character organization prowess and I'll see you next week!

    That's a very good tip. I used a similar solution on the rig of my D&M Charkit. Actually, I use a slider to turn around the character 180º. But it's pretty much the same logic that you used. Thanks for sharing!

      Nice! Yep, you can use this technique for that as well. I just didn't have the time to rig the character all the way to do that. I should've mentioned it though. Thanks for sharing!

    Wouldn't this cause problems if/when you needed your pre-comp to be continuously rasterized? I always run into buggy layer issues when I attempt to pre-comp vector layers and disabling 3d usually fixes it. Lemme know if I'm missing something here...

      @Workbenchtv  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I meant about it working if you don't have to do some odd things. Continuous rasterization was one of the things I was thinking of. However, if you don't have 3D layers in the main comp for them to interact with, continuous rasterization won't mess it up.
      I'm not sure what kind of layer issues you're mentioning. The only thing I can think of is you need to enlarge something so you need to continuously rasterize the precomp so it doesn't alias. You should be able to turn on continuous rasterization on these 3D layers in the precomp and bring them into another comp no problem.

    Love your tutorials, but for a non-native english speaker your scripting tips never make any sense on the first view-through :D Slow it down a bit!

      I try. This one was kind of a throwaway expression. We just multiply the slider value by .01 to reduce it so the layers are just ever so slightly on top of each other. And we just add that value at the end: value + [0,0,z]. Basically any way you want to push the layers in z-space is fine.

    dude ,, just amazing ,I mean as always
    I am one of those who did the chopping thing ,, duplicate ,, bring the layer to the top of everything ,, hehehe

      Thanks! There's a bunch over there! You're probably talking about Flow I'd imagine. Here's a list from last year of my favorite tools. All of the ones on the right side are in there, other than my own StackIt script which can be found in the products section on this site: workbench.tv/blog/2016-12-28_Tools/

    It's a great idea, but rigging plug ins like RubberHose and DUIK don't always play nice with 3d layers.

    • @Workbenchtv
      @Workbenchtv  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. That's why I said if you can do it, this method works well. If you don't want to go 3D, you can link two layers together and make a checkbox control that is linked to the two layers' opacities.

    • @TheRampax
      @TheRampax 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, like you say, that whole "dupe the layer and bring it forward" gag feels like such a hack. It's horrible when you have to pick up a project that is full of split layers.

    • @Workbenchtv
      @Workbenchtv  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. This isn't the only way, and probably not even the best. But it's an option.

    Wait, why not use the checkbox controller and use the if expression to control the z position?

    • @Workbenchtv
      @Workbenchtv  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you can have multiple levels if you need them. ;)

      Nope. I've downloaded it, but I've never actually bothered to figure it out.

      Do you usually animate limbs by morphing of lines? Though... also I remember that you told about using of RubberHose for the character animation.

    • @Workbenchtv
      @Workbenchtv  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's an older character I already had built before Rubber Hose existed. ;) Good eye!

      He needed that Michael Jackson kick! I had a whole series planned for this guy, but of course, it was backburnered for paying work. I need to finish it though! I had some good ideas for it.

    hey man nice video but you have got to start naming you videos properly! for example after effects tutorial - character organization so that people know what its about. thanks

    • @Workbenchtv
      @Workbenchtv  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eh, I think I'm doing well enough. It's how I want to do it. I don't want 8 word titles just to include After Effects in it, haha. Plus, if you find my video you've been looking at AE tutorials most likely. It's in the keywords and there's an AE on the thumbnail (though I just realized it gets covered up by the time so I'll likely move that). Thanks for watching!

    • @monojit6820
      @monojit6820 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Workbench well there is no way to tell what this video is about by just looking at your thumbnail....

    • @Workbenchtv
      @Workbenchtv  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And as I said, there would be if I move the AE from the lower right corner. So I'm going to do that.

    3d layers demand more RAM. So, If this criterion is critical, it is simpler to create two (above and under) limb layers and trigger their opacity (0/100) with checkbox control.

    • @Workbenchtv
      @Workbenchtv  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely! If it's really taxing your system you can do that. But I thought I mentioned that for a few characters at least in an otherwise non-3D scene it shouldn't be noticeable. :)

    • @Rombododecaedron
      @Rombododecaedron 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I understand )). It is my own pain which enforces me to deny 3d before I properly think about it )). But, of course, the idea about the third dimension is really good!

    • @Workbenchtv
      @Workbenchtv  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well sometimes it is definitely a pain. So I can't fault you on that. If I were putting this into a scene that had other 3D elements in it it might get really slow and annoying. But for a basically 2D character on its own, it's not bad.

    Simple question does turning on 3d will it make my pc slow 😀😀 i mean if there are lot's of character then 😅😅

    • @Workbenchtv
      @Workbenchtv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It certainly can. You kind of have to balance which is harder to deal with, extra layers to change directions, or speed of working. For a few characters, I would think this method would be easier. Depending upon what you're doing you could also animate all of the characters in precomps using this method and then composite them together to render.
