    From what I understand Scientology is all about hooking you in before revealing anything about the religion

      David Lev Yeah, you got to e eased into the bullshit. If they'd lay the Xenu bullshit on you straight away, you'd just leave. Takes a lot of brainwashing first. Expensive brainwashing.
      Thing is, they use valid "self-help" stuff that kinda works and makes you feel better first, so you go "Oh, this $cientology thing as a whole works!". Then comes the bullshit, but you're already hooked.
      As a side note, when they do those "stress tests" on the streets, those will ALWAYS show that SOMETHING is wrong with you... you're insecure, or sad inside, whatever... but $cientology can help you with that. And there you go.

      It's not a religion it's a role playing game. Everyone is pretending they've got their shit together and special powers. If you hang around long enough to get properly indoctrinated you will start pretending you have your shit together and have special powers too. There are levels of status along the way which cost tens of thousands of dollars to reach, almost half a million dollars in total to reach the high status level. Each level you reach you get to pretend you have more special powers and more of your shit together, but in reality the longer you hang around the more messed up you get.

    "I wish you the best." As a journalist you are automatically an enemy of the church and from your first audit, a folder was created with your name on it which would follow you through your time in Scientology; a whole history of you, your thoughts, and the experiences of your life. Over time those folders accumulate and should you ever decide to leave the church, people would pour through that information to use against you if you choose to speak against them. So much has been written about the church since you did this piece. Just hope you were not sucked in.

      @CBourn48223 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, to be fair, if you're self righteous enough to attack, then you should be able to defend against attacks on your character.
      The standard religious recruitment tactic seems to start with a confession of your shortcomings followed by their promise of making them "go away" whilst being shamed if you are unable to follow their instructions.

    • @hiker64
      @hiker64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CBourn48223 But nothing is "standard" when it comes to Scientology. It's not a religion. It may look like one, but that's for tax purposes. That's not to say that early Scientology classes don't have merit and that they aren't helpful. They can be, but Scientology's goal is to pull you in hard and to get you to commit to either service via the Sea Org or with your dollars until you are either too old or too poor to provide labor and/or money.

      "Be sitting there. Sit in your chair. Have legs. Be having legs. Sit in your chair. Be sitting. Sit in your chair." That's a paraphrase of a secretly recorded "service" someone recorded on the day they had their very first audit and were encouraged to join in. Apparently that is also how they "comfort" a crying child, which they consider adults in tiny bodies. You cry. You be laying in your crib. Lay there. Be a baby crying. You cry.

      When I did Dianetic auditing we were following chains of engrams, I reached some which were when I was in the womb. That was weird, sensing the physical sensation of being in the womb and hearing what my parents were saying at the time. We stopped there, I imagine that Scientology started when people kept going back in time, maybe some people had engrams which were from before they were conceived? I don't know how one would deal with that, I'd have to seriously ponder whether this is imagination having fun with me, or if it's legit. Regardless it wouldn't justify setting up an oppressive bureaucratic structure. That's more a reflection of who is at the top than about the experiences people have. One always must learn to separate "the wheat from the chaff" so to speak.

  • @chuckbeattyo

    03:43 They in Scientology are not allowed to define two major things: 1) Xenu 2) "body-thetans"
    Xenu's the bad guy who dumped zillions of surplus souls onto earth, damaged souls that infest ALL humans on earth today. We are supposedly being effected by our loads of surplus souls that infest our bodies. Xenu's just the bad ancient space leader from another star system who dumped these damaged souls here on earth, the South Park episode "Tom Cruise Won't Come Out of the Closet" episode, has the Scientology secret story. But simply, the surplus souls that infest us all today, supposedly, are called "body-thetans" and Scientology isn't allowed to explain either Xenu or "body-thetans" publicly.
    Intro Scientology cannot explain this.
    Only ex members are good at explaining this simply. Existing Scientologists are incapable and disallowed from explaining it.
    In a nutshell, 5 of 8 of the "upper levels" of Scientology are exorcism quack therapy to exorcise the "body-thetans" off of a Scientologist's body!
    When Tom Cruise was jumping on Oprah's couch, he had coincidentally also completed ALL 5 of the Scientology exorcism levels, LOL!
    YOu become a fully brainwashed Scientologist when you get up to believing you are infested with your own custom load of "body-thetans" and you pay to exorcise all your "body-thetans" off your body, for years, since completing the 5 exorcism levels of Scientology takes years!
    That's way way way up ahead for anyone who gets stuck into Scientology!
    Skip it! Now you know.

    Engrams are not memories... Aren't memories primarily just visual? Like a bin full of old photographs. Anyway that's not how I understood them, but the definition may have been changed by the Scientology side. Re-experiencing the engram is supposed to draw its energy, neutralizing it. LRH got that idea from psychoanalysts. You didn't mention feeling euphoric or laughing, maybe the example you gave her was not a real memory? Not sure why she asked you to think of a pleasurable moment, she was supposed to ask you to move to another engram associated with the first one you mentioned. They are tied together by association, making what they called chains in Dianetics. The auditor is supposed to try moving backward or forward in time to reveal the next one. Once there are none left you were declared "clear" but I am under the impression that the definition of clear was changed a few times. Anyway. Once "clear" you supposedly have fewer hangups (literally) and more energy, you may be more conscious during the day instead of being run by reactions or habits feeding off you. I liked Dianetics auditing, not sure whether it really does anything tangible or not but it was an interesting experience. I did feel different but that may have been a placebo effect. I wasn't sold on the religion aspect, I have always been extremely sceptical of bureaucratic / organized religions. A young fellow from SeaOrg came to give a talk but my intuition rebelled, what he was saying seemed just plain wrong to me. I remember asking him about Gandhi and he had nothing coherent to say. I left after that.
    That said, I am not impressed by how they explained things to you. Pretty wishy-washy if you ask me.

    • @jupiterpheonix3631

    "75 million years ago, the galactic overlord for this sector of the galaxy was called Xenu. He was in charge of 76 planets, including Earth (at that time known as Teegeeack). All of the planets Xenu controlled were over-populated by, on average, 178 billion people. Social problems dictated that Xenu rid his sector of the galaxy of this overpopulation problem, so he developed a plan. Xenu sent out tax audit demands to all these trillions of people. As each one entered the audit centers for the income tax inspections, the people were seized, held down and injected with a mixture of alcohol and glycol, and frozen. Then, all 13.5 trillion of these frozen people were put into spaceships that looked exactly like DC8 airplanes, except that the spaceships had rocket engines instead of propellers. Xenu's entire fleet of DC8-like spaceships then flew to planet Earth, where the frozen people were dumped in and around volcanoes in the Canary Islands and the Hawaiian Islands. When Xenu's Air Force had finished dumping the bodies into the volcanoes, hydrogen bombs were dropped into the volcanoes and the frozen space aliens were vaporized. However, Xenu's plan involved setting up electronic traps in Teegeeack's atmosphere which were designed to trap the souls or spirits of the dead space aliens. When the 13.5 trillion spirits were being blown around on the nuclear winds, the electronic traps worked like a charm and captured all the souls in the electronic, sticky fly-paper like traps. The spirits of the aliens were then taken to huge multiplex cinemas that Xenu had previously instructed his forces to build on Teegeeack. In these movie theaters the spirits had to spend many days watching special 3-D movies, the purpose of which was twofold: 1) to implant into these spirits a false reality, i.e. the reality that WOGS (Hubbard's derisory term for anyone not a Scientologists) know on Earth today; and, 2) to control these spirits for all eternity so that they could never cause trouble for Xenu in this sector of the Galaxy. During these films, many false pictures and stories were implanted into these spirits, which resulted in the spirits believing in all the things that control mankind on Earth today, including religion. The concept of religion, including God, Christ, Mohammed, Moses etc., were all an implanted false reality that to this very minute are used to control WOGS on Earth."
    -L Ron Hubbard

      Disagree. She didn't explain that the Volcano on the Dianetics book is one of the Volcanoes that Xenu dumped humanoids into, disintegrating the humans' bodies, but the souls got captured by Xenu in these soul-catching machines and then Xenu mass indoctrinated the souls for 36 and 1/2 days with "implanted" false ideas, and then let those souls roam earth, and today, in Scientology, the secret word for these hidden souls is "body-thetans." Xenu caused the "body-thetans" problem, for which the L. Ron Hubbard exorcism, expensive, quackery levels called OT 3, OT 4, OT 5, OT 6, and OT 7 are the long exorcism pseudo-therapy quackery that Scientologists have to do to get rid of their infestations of their "body-thetans". Scientology is a HUGE amount of quackery that peddles a newbie into more and more nonsense, until the final Xenu story and the exorcism then are supposed to "make sense" and you pay for it all, step by step. A pay as you go charade "religion."
      It truly is "snipe-hunting" (see Wikipedia for snipe hunting). One chases after and supposedly exorcises "body-thetans" that Xenu left on earth as a dumping ground from other outer space planets.
      Skip this nonsense, save you money, the above is all you need to know of what Scientology is. It's quackery pseudo-therapy and exorcism of non-existence "body-thetans" that the non-existent/fictional Xenu did NOT leave on earth for Scientologists to find and exorcise!

    They're really friendly and hospitable to people going in for the first time. Their aim is to make you feel like they want to help you and like you belong. The point of auditing is two-fold, one is that it puts you into an emotionally-compromised state by making you go over traumatic memories for hours. The other is that it collects information on you that helps them profile ways to strike back at you if you leave or criticize the church. When you submit yourself to auditing, you're basically going to an extreme gaslighting version of confession.

      peekaboots01 You should be very careful not to misrepresent the practice of auditing. Mr. Hubbard does mention the role hypnotism played in his development of Dianetics in his book, Dianetics: The Evolution of a Science. Maybe he was wrong, but Mr. Hubbard believed he was 'waking' the mind rather than putting the mind to sleep as in popular notions of hypnotism. The canceler procedure was a precautionary measure that was later cancelled itself. The whole idea was to assure the person that they were not being hypnotized and that they would remember everything that happened in the session. There are people that will tell you that conversation itself is a form of hypnotism so the controversy can continue for a long time over the use of a word ignoring whether or not anyone is helped.

    • @BlueGiant69202
      @BlueGiant69202 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      squeezar jones The fuss went on for more than thirty years after Dianetics was published. Just for starters, Mr. Hubbard was not an accredited physician, psychiatrist or hypnotist. Dianetics did not go through formal scientific peer review channels or double blind studies. Personally, I think that bypassing formal scientific channels was for the best because the research would have been stalled in its infancy. For example, it was another 50 years later that scientists finally decided whether or not there was such a thing as a hypnotic trance state that was distinguishable from deep relaxation.
      Most of the modern fuss in 2017 is over The Church of Scientology's authority and social relations. But remember the 300 of Sparta. The Spartan lifestyle was very harsh but it was the Spartans that stood between Greece and the Persians.

      Oops! Missed the last few seconds. If you want to know about Xenu, you'll have to hunt it out for yourself. Beware of impersonation recordings and clips carefully removed from their proper connect.

      Van Torrance Given what this woman said about visiting an org, recalling crying in a crib and eating oranges, it might be a very bad idea for her to know anything about Xenu. She sounds smart enough to figure out what it's about.

    this girl robbed herself of a very powerful opportunity. she was placed in a room with a woman who was asking her 2 identify one of the many memories that gives her pain or shame, one of the very things that holds her back in life. she was given the opportunity to face one of the Demons that moves her and she totally missed the opportunity because she was afraid. I would not have the courage to confront my demons with a stranger neither but sharing this cowardice with the world is not good

      William H. Williams I agree with Mr. Williams. The woman went in with a prejudicial, distrustful mindset that was not actually an "informed" mindset. Would she trust Dr. Bruce Goldberg to hypnotize her into a past or future life? Here is a Zen Koan. Who awakens?

      Right! A talking snake, a virgin birth, a dude with two of every animal on a boat, a deity talking through a burning bush, and on and on. All of that, COMPLETELY LOGICAL. It's hilarious when one religion tries to slam another over beliefs.

    Haha so you lost your memory on crying in a crib because that was scarring your adulthood.. and no longer eat oranges.. because pleasure is bad. I'm not mocking you I understand it was a let's see what this is about..
    I'd never be a Scientologist.. this is why I do feel though for those who have family within there.
    Old Ronald Hubbard went to the cupboard.. FFS it's said he was a science fiction writer.. how can it not be believed that he wrote his own religion..??
    All I can say is anyone looking at exposing falsehoods or weird facts about religions is doing a positive thing.

    can one use an e-meter to help clear out negative blocks on your own (without an auditor)? I have bought dianetics, handbook to preclears, and self analysis and am doing all the excercises in the 2 latter books. thought adding an e-meter to my therapy would expedite the healing process.

    Hi! I got the sense that AJ was intentionally skewing the story so that it made Scientology sound really cryptic, vague, and insane. From personal experience, this is not at ALL what the experience is when you go to an org, at least where I live! I honestly would recommend stopping in one, if you want the best idea what its like. Then you can *actually* know what it is like doing intoductory services. Because this is just a sad explaination tbh. Misleadingly vague.
