Simply picking something up off the floor is important? Kneeling is possible after total knee replacement surgery. Were you able to kneel?

I watched this video several times before I had a LTKR 1/15/ 2024. I was very concerned because I work a job that requires kneeling.
About 2 and 1/2 weeks post op, I dropped something on the floor and it made a mess. My wife had already gone to bed, and I did not want to leave a mess for her to clean later.
Without thinking I dropped to my knees and cleaned up. About 3/4 of the job completed I realized what I had done.
I was pleasantly surprised my surgical leg wasn’t screaming at me and it wasn’t a huge deal. The lack of feeling was a bit weird.
It wasn’t that bad getting back on my feet either.
Thanks for your videos….they’ve been very helpful!

My surgeon told me it's a "use it or lose it deal". After the staples were removed, after I felt safe trying and after my oven element decided to "blow" I decided to try kneeling. I decided to try kneeling in bed. My thinking was if the pain is unbearable I could tuck n roll with no problem. It worked and I survived. It felt weird but all went well. I used a small cushion knelt behind the stove and fixed it. Even today 18 months later it feels strange but the Doc. may have been right. So far so good. Dave

This gives me hope where I had previously just been told I won't be able to kneel. Thank you for making it clear that I won't have to start this exercise on Day One! My TKR is scheduled for six days' time (May 2023). I am pretty nervous of the pain to come! So glad my husband found your video; I'm going to catch up with the rest of them, pronto! Thank you so much!

My surgery is coming up in around 3 weeks and I’m trying to do different exercises pre-surgery. I only found you, Dr Rosen, a few minutes ago but you approach to post rehab sounds doable and good to me! I trust my surgeon here in Kingsport TN. My pre-op is coming u soon and I wanted to watch some videos in order to know IF I need to ask him some questions plus understand what I can expect post surgery!! Your videos are very helpful. I might also add that I am an amputee and my only knee is shot, kapoot, etc so a bit of extra apprehension involved. So thank you for your straight forward, clear and concise advice!!! Barbara

I want to give encouragement to everyone scared, as I was, to even think about kneeling, before my knee replacement back in Apr 2024. My friend had TKR on both knees years ago, and she said she did it, so I felt I had to try. about 3 months after TKR and once the incision mainly healed, closed up, and swelling minimal, I decided to try just once, when making my bed, so I very cautiously knelt the one knee on my mattress. Yes, it was a pretty uncomfortable (but not sharp), and I only stayed in that position for about 5 seconds and fell over sideways on the bed, but I felt I could try again! It didn't kill me and pain wasn't sharp. So every second day, I did same thing for about two weeks, moving knee around for most comfortable soft kneeling position on the mattress and making time longer by a few seconds each time. Eventually it felt more comfortable as it really loosened up over time. So I did what dr Adam said and moved on to my couch, then a one inch sponge gardeners pad on the floor, then, after those for a few weeks, decided to go carefully to my actual floor. I kept my phone nearby for all times, and also made sure a hard chair or something else right beside me to pull myself up using the other knee, if I got stuck down there. Felt more comfortable each time, and Two months ago, I decided to take a chance and get into my tub for a bath! Yes, I can now kneel, and get back up, slowly and so happy! I know not everyone can, but please try it at the right time like Dr says- slowly and carefully with soft area, and progress from there if u feel not too Bad. Also important to keep the other leg muscles strong so u can use it to get up too if stuck. I will never kneel "quickly" because i dont want to risk breaking the hardware but am confident now to know I can get down there. I pray everyone else will get there too! Just pay attention to what any knee discomfort is telling you as you work throug each time. I wouldn't have continued if I had felt any strong sharp pain, but it was just "uncomfortable dull pain" till got loosened up, so I guess watch out for that. Thx Dr Adam!

Prostration (with knees, face and palms on the floor) is a part of the Islamic prayer. Hi Dr. Rosen, by kneeling, I wonder if you refer to the Japanese style of sitting called Seiza 正坐 whereby the body sits on the calves and the angle of knee flexion is almost zero. I wonder if that's achievable at all, with practice? I am considering getting a TKR for one knee which has a bone-on-bone medial condyle. I can kneel with genuflexion of 90 degrees and I am having stability problem but not much pain except after extended walking or on getting up after sleep in the morning. It's more stiff than painful. Do you think I need a TKR right now or I should wait? Also, I read that a partial knee replacement on the affected side is better than a total one. Is that correct? Thank you.

Why does anyone want to kneel anyway? For Muslims I get it. But for the rest of us I’m not sure this is useful. I don’t go to church and so far we don’t have a king.

Many of us kneel as part of our jobs. Landscapers, construction workers, etc. I’m a veterinarian, and I often work on dogs on pads on the floor.
