I like to rest capacitors three ways to Sunday, however I do know and understand that changing it will be done. My experience in electronics is over 50 years, but on some days the mystery of it all dawns on me. For small value caps after I measure the cap on my digital “C” meter for value I’ll test the cap with a Simpson 260 using the Rx 10000 range. The Cap originally looks like a shirt circuit as it quickly charges up the meter needle will swing to the right and settle somewhere around the extreme right scale. Small caps .0001 uf to .001 display a quick jump of the needle. Larger caps of .01 to .1 the. Jump charge is slower. Electrolytic cap jump slower and settle around 100 k ohms. What I am actually witnessing is the V-loss action. Once the needle settles the insulation resistance can be read. I have a breadboard variable 450 DC power supply to see how the cap of any value holds the charge. So I can check any cap at its rated voltage for testing. Leaky charges will discharge theirselves quickly. Electrolytic’s hold the charge for days. In the final test in the ground connection I insert an ammeter , to monitor leakage current. A really good cap will show NO leakage current. Any Cap that shows any amount of leakage current , I consider leaky beyond use with a shirt life. Very small caps in the pico range are the hardest to test. The best technique I use a Square wave generator and a scope . The square wave is applied to an series connected RC network. Then monitor the junction of the parts the best visual is looking for a differentiated signal and measure the rise time of spikes. Using complicated math I can calculate the ESR. More than that the waveforms show me good caps Vs defective CAPS. I know, I know its a lot of over kill to test a CAP. I don’t put every CAP in every way, I only do this fir an understanding. Some of us spend as much time pouring over data sheets,mI like doing my own detailed research. I pay no attention to numbers of Vloss or ESR, when its easy to measure using modern tech. In vintage ESR and Vloss mean nothing, however in high tech modern gear and switching power supplies ESR means everything. If you use an old CAP with poor ESR it will over hear and explode. All one needs to do is physically feel and observe suspected CAPS.
