This is one of the best interviews and interviewers I have ever seen. I usually give credit where due to the interviewee but this guy Alan strikes a perfect balance of interesting, well thought out questions and actually letting the subject speak. Fantastic.
Whatever David puts out I'm there 2-3 hours makes no difference. The man's work speaks for itself. He should be telling the studio what, when and how not the other way around
Gives me more hope for this movie that David is distancing himself with how the movie is being marketed. Sounds like he (as I) has no interest in a Tony Soprano origin story but a film in the same world building on the same themes.
To be fair, he always said that the impetus of the movie was a blending of his thoughts on the Newark riots and his desire to explore Tony’s childhood further. So it’s not entirely inaccurate to market it that way, but it’s reassuring to know that it’s not the ONLY focus of the movie. We have a fairly good idea of how Tony thinks and came to be, so it would be more interesting to flesh out all these details we don’t know about their world.

this interview is a good example of why art is so amazing. You want him to say something that speaks to you or changes you or explains something about life that could help you, deep down we’re all looking for an answer, but he’s just a regular guy talking about the logistics of his job. The only way he can compel you is by tuning into something bigger than himself and channeling that into creating a piece of art that lets you pull a message out that resonates with you to make into something of your own.

as a millenial, to answer david's question why younger people are enjoying his old show: I think the sopranos is of timeless quality and it shouldn't matter what generation you were born, to be able to appreciate a classic. but when you create something, you shouldn't easily assume what you made is that great, so i understand why he asked.

@@freddybeer Yeah, I hear you. But, being old enough to remember the turmoil in the US during the late 1960s in Los Angeles, Cleveland and Newark, I find it ironic that The Sopranos’ film deals with the Newark riot just as so many other divisive events occurred in 2020.

Alan: After all of these years, you finally have made a Sopranos movie.
David: 🙄 💭 "This f*ckin' guy."
Vera as Livia is perfect.
Yes! I forget the one with her and Paul Walker. She shows some Livia there.
@@cohenkane2148 Her Norma Bates on Bates Motel was very Livia-ish too.
When I heard that casting choice I knew I had nothing to fear about this prequel
@@cohenkane2148 running scared badass movie !
@@listentothenightfilms Shit, maybe I got that movie wrong. It was Bates Motel show.
You're not gonna believe this. He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. The guy was an interior decorator.
His house looked like shit.
Probably whiped his ass bare handed before he came to this country!!!
That kind of guy probably washes his balls in ice water!
He got a little pissed off when paulie didn’t put universal remote on docking station.

Interesting to hear him mention Vinny Ocean, who it was always speculated Tony Soprano was loosely based on. I guess that’s some what of a confirmation that he was paying attention to the irl counterparts of The Sopranos.
There’s a documentary on TH-cam called “The Real Sopranos” that is an absolute must watch for any Sopranos fan.
This is one of the best interviews and interviewers I have ever seen. I usually give credit where due to the interviewee but this guy Alan strikes a perfect balance of interesting, well thought out questions and actually letting the subject speak. Fantastic.
20 years I waited for a soprano spin off. I compromised. I watch TH-cam clips.
Lmao
TH-cam clips off the radiator
@@14AspenDrive 😂😂😂
To be honest this whole movie felt like a compromise
WOW ! What an INCREDIBLE INTERVIEW!! INCREDIBLE JOB !!!
Paulie pointing his index and pinky fingers at the same time always made me laugh. The Sopranos never got their comedic due.
so many hilarious quips. talking to Melfi about the Horshack test...
Word to the wise : remember Pearl Harbor !
This movie was incredible. Loved all the references from the show
Whatever David puts out I'm there 2-3 hours makes no difference. The man's work speaks for itself. He should be telling the studio what, when and how not the other way around
beautiful interview!
David Chase, living legend.
The Sopranos is no doubt the best ever TV show in history, by far, and iv seen many
David Chase reminds me here of another deadpan Jersey genius, Donald Fagen.
This is such a great, raw interview.
For a guy creating the best mafia show ever, David Chase is so calm and non emotional.
He's depressed af.
Outstanding interview. Never heard Chase speak so much. Pure genius.
i love the sopranos- i watch it or just put it on more than anythng else. i grew up in LI. & as a kid we went to my grandparents apt in manhatten with my parents & bro my uncles fams & cousins would come & my sicilian grandma would make us all dinner.the recreation of that culture thats in the sopranos is more real than ive seen in any othr thing.my wife once askd me why i have it on for years now & i told her it comforts me bcz it does. i hope the movie is great.
p.s.aftr christopher dies- paulie told tony that if tony was like a dad to christopher then he(paulie) was his "dutch uncle".
this interview is a good example of why art is so amazing.
Well said

the only tv show i can re-watch at any point in time. just quality through and through.
I love how David accidently called Jim, Tony.
Alan, thank you for this. What a great interview. A real interview without powderpuff, self-serving questions is a rarity. I found myself riveted watching a genuine conversation about a fascinating topic.
David Chase is a legend
David Chase, VInce Gilligan and David Simon: three of the most ingenious and unbelievably mind-blowing TV producers who have ever lived. We are blessed and thankful to get to watch and know their unforgettable masterpieces (The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and The Wire)
Love David Chase love the sopranos and can't wait to see the movie!!!!
Great interview…Chase is by all accounts a really tough interview but I thought this guy did an excellent job. Some of the questions were a bit generic but some of the more off-beat questions really seemed to get Chase thinking. Really enjoyed it - definitely worth half an hour of my time!
we need more David Chase interviews
I dont understand, when i was a kid David Chase was an old man, now I'm old... and Dave's still old!
Ladies and gentlemen, the creator of the best TV series in the history of television - David Chase.
Hell yeah
Your right
"I hope a lot of people are gonna see it...If they don't they don't. I wouldn't do many things to make people go(see it)". the absolute definition of realness!!!! #davidchaseisalegend #staysafe #stayhealthy
Quasimodo predicted all of this. Quasimodo was saying that Newark in the 60s and 70s was really an important turning point.
dont you mean nostradamus ?
Really nice of David chase to sit down and tell him a couple of three things
as a millenial, to answer david's question why younger people are enjoying his old show: I think the sopranos is of timeless quality and it shouldn't matter what generation you were born, to be able to appreciate a classic. but when you create something, you shouldn't easily assume what you made is that great, so i understand why he asked.
It really ages well.
The quality of the writing is what endures.
Whatever happened to Gary coopah the strong silent type. Once you get em started, you can’t shut em up. Disfunction this, disfunction that, disfunction all fungoo.
David Chase has always seems like he would rather not explain anything in great detail lol(let's move on)
Never admit the existence of this thing!
Like Lynch. It's the David energy.
@@Despair505 "elaborate on that" "no, I won't"
Amazing how such a serious sounding man was behind a show that had a lot of good comedy within it
Yes, Uncle

Casting Michael Gandolfini was a totally brilliant move
David Chase has the makings of a Varsity Athlete
Amazing! Very excited, great interview.
David Chase has the coolest watch I’ve ever seen.
Can NOT wait for this.... OMG. Such talent. I'm one of those Covid "go back and discover" shows like Sopranos, Game of Thrones, etc. So glad I did.
This is an amazing interview! Great questions! (Now I need to see what the young Tony does in Holstens!) This is tiding me over for the wait for 'The Many Saints of Newark' which has been so painful! I haven't been this hyped for a movie in a LONG time!
That was a great question the interviewer asked David Chase about “The Many Saints of Newark,” dealing with the race riots of the late 1960s, and premiering when there is much racial unrest today in America.
@@kensellers4082 - I couldn't care less about the political side of it. I just wanna see Tony's past, his family, a young Junior Soprano, and see who Dickie Moltisanti was really like. The racial issues don't interest me at all. I'm sick to death of talking about race. I just want to see the 'birth' of Tony Soprano.
@@freddybeer
Yeah, I hear you. But, being old enough to remember the turmoil in the US during the late 1960s in Los Angeles, Cleveland and Newark, I find it ironic that The Sopranos’ film deals with the Newark riot just as so many other divisive events occurred in 2020.
@@kensellers4082 - Oh definitely. The timing of it is so strange. David Chase dealt with that so casually. Like 'Okay.' Lol! But the riots was what actually made him want to do this movie so...........I can't wait!!! I hope James Gandolfini's son does him proud!
@@freddybeer
Yes, I too hope that Michael Gandolfini is superb in the film. It’s uncanny how much he resembles his late, great father with those eyes and his father’s great smile.
On the local radio station, NJ 101.5 FM, a woman called up and said she met James Gandolfini by chance in one of the bars on the Point Pleasant, NJ boardwalk while “ The Sopranos” was still in production and she said that Mr. Gandolfini could not have been nicer. What a great loss his death was to his family and to his millions of fans.
Requiem aeternam, Mr. Gandolfini.
Thanks for creating the sopranos great show
Innovated television, real old school... I take my hat off. I heard his house outshines even versails!
Great interview! Loved all the questions.
