Have you ever re-bought a bike you previously owned?
In 2020 I bought myself a brand new ZZR1400...simply stunning. I sold it barely a year later to fund a Fiat 124 Spider. Now, on Auto-Trader the bike is for sale and I find myself wondering if it is a case of blue-sky thinking or should I let bygones be bygones....
    Thoughts on a postcard please.

I can plug a tubeless tyre at the roadside much more quickly than I could change a tube or patch a tube. I can get moving and organise a proper repair later. I got a puncture on Christmas Day, as I arrived back at my garage, in a tyre that was only three weeks old. Until I plugged it and reinflated the tyre I couldn’t even push the bike into the garage with the tyre deflated. The tyre was properly repaired by a local tyre shop for £30.

Tubed wheels were all that originally existed as motorcycles were derived from bicycles (which ironically have only relatively recently been fitted with tubeless wheels). They may have their place for dedicated offroad bikes but on the road they’re dangerous when they deflate (I know, I had a front deflate at 40mph) and a PITA to change. They’re also typically much heavier than cast tubeless wheels that most road bikes have today. It’s hilarious after well over 100 years of development that so many classic road bike reproductions have tubed spoke wheels. Funnily enough they didn’t replicate the dodgy electrics, “interesting” brakes and death trap handling from old bikes 😂

The Hurricane was designed by an American, Craig Vetter. He was the inventor of the Windjammer fairing which was copied all over the world. He sold his factory to Bell Helmets when the Japanese factories launched their own faired models. I met him and he told me he had a job to get the factory to accept the design. At the time Americans were stripping all the “junk” off the standard bikes to make them into customs.

  • @nockianlifter661
    @nockianlifter661 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Tubed tyres usually deflate rapidly after a puncture, which happened to me at 70mph carrying a pillion. I was very glad it was a rear tyre because I doubt I would have managed the font end deflating so rapidly. Tubeless tyres are safer because most punctures are slow and by the time you realise you have one, it’s relatively easy to plug them. A tube can sometimes be re-inflated with tyre weld foam, but it’s 50/50. A tubed tyre that has come off the bead, or the wheel has a damaged rim, is pretty much a right off and it requires a proper repair in a workshop. Where tubes are better -arguably-is off road, where a damaged rim, or serious side wall puncture can be repaired with a new tube and a lot of tie wraps or straps to hold the tyre in place to get you to the home. It should be noted though, that many modern off road tyres are pretty difficult to remove even with good equipment and therefore the advantages of tubes are nullified. All in all, if you’re on the road, or doing mild green lanes, then tubeless is probably the best. If you’re doing serious off road miles, or travels in far flung countries, then soft sidewall tubed tyres are probably your friend.

The trouble with the K series bikes is that they were heavier than the boxer engined bikes and a lot of BMW riders preferred the boxer engine for its character (myself included). Indeed BMW wanted to discontinue the the boxer engine when they brought out the K series bikes but the outcry from many BMW riders forced them to rethink and spend a lot of money to produce a new oils and air cooled boxer that complied with emissions.

The last K series (1,300) were very quick and tons of torque. To really a competitor to the ZZR as it was more of a tourer and had shaft drive (and cruise). Unfortunately it was a compromised design from the beginning - the 1200 was poor, BMW got ricardo to breathe on it to create the 1300 but it suffered from a heavy and grinding clutch feel with odd engagement, it ran very hot, and usually due to the radiator grille getting full of crud because of the poor design, overheated and blew the radiator. The switchgear of this era was also very flaky, but the GT version was a lovely tourer - 140 on the Autobahn in complete comfort. The 1600 that replaced it was smoother but very heavy, less torque and stupidly expensive.

Tubed versus tubeless tyres. The main advantage of tubeless tyres is the ability to effect a quick repair on the roadside using a tyre plugger kit (you don't need a brand new tyre every time you get a puncture). Whilst changing an inner tube can be inexpensive, there is the time and effort required to remove the wheel and tyre on the roadside, before the new tube can be inserted. I had to help a friend when he got a puncture on his Honda Goldwing. Fortunately, it had tubeless tyres and I had a repair kit and an air compressor on my bike. A quick 15 minutes to plug and inflate and we were on our way.

I guess it depends where you get a puncture.
If it's a case of a quick patch until you can get to a garage, tubeless all the way.
But if you need the repair to hold for the next 300 miles over rough terrain, you want to just swap the tube.

Cars have only had tubeless tyres for decades. They're safer, deflate much slower when punctured. Many have nails in, don't deflate and it's not even noticed unless picked up on the MOT. And tyre shops regularly repair them safely from the inside of the tyre. No car driver would put up with a tube type tyre.

Hello Freddie! On the tubeless vs tubed debate, I am firmly pro-tubeless. A few years ago I went on a moderate tour from North Florida to Atlanta, using only back roads on a 2019 Suzuki GSXS 1000 F (A surprisingly great sports tourer). Half way through the journey I picked up a puncture in rural Georgia. I felt something was wrong, pulled over to the next gas station which, luckily, neighbored a car tire repair shop. For $15 the mechanic plugged the hole then gently road to the nearest motorcycle dealership, got a new rear tire, and was back on the road. The rest of the journey there, and back, however, was spent on the interstate system as I did not want to chance another puncture in the middle of nowhere. Suffice it to say, I feel as though my situation would be far more complex if I was on a motorcycle with tubed tires. I now own a 2020 Triumph Street Triple RS and Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. The Enfield is for nice chilled out rides and weekend tours. Because of the tubed tires I do not feel comfortable touring more than 3 or 4 hours away from home and would rather tour on the interstate that has regular traffic which can blow nails and sharp debris to the shoulder of the road. In fact, a dream bike of mine is not just a Bonneville T-120 but a T-120 with lightweight wheels and tubeless tire. I found the T-120 exceptionally comfortable and would love to buy one as a long distance tourer but would feel compelled to convert to tubeless to mitigate the risk of having a total flat and being stuck. Further, I would sacrifice the retro aesthetic by fitting lightweight, non-spoked, wheels for a significant unsprung weight savings. These are just my thoughts, would love to hear what others think. I love the channel, please keep up the top tier content!

A company in England were selling the Hurricane tank/seat replica sets, the quality wasn't the best, the actual tank under the Hurricane molding was cheap and nasty and only took about 2 months before the vibration of the Bonneville split it in half.

I think the pre-registration is due to Euro 5b - the catalytic converters have to work - not just when new (under controlled conditions) - but also throughout the life of the bike (under conditions the manufacturers have no control over). This raises the development costs for manufacturers but also applies to any new bikes from 1 Jan 2025.

As for tube tyres on road bikes. Unless you are a very competent mechanic with lots of tools to remove wheels, tubeless is the way to go. Most folks touring with tube tyres who get punctures are phoning recovery, where as many tubeless are fixed roadside with a sticky string plug.

Freddie glad you had a great 👍 trip away in the Jeep mate . Hay just a suggestion with your next book , why don’t you call it Vol 2 and from the 1990,s to say 2020 . As your other one was 1950-1980 . You could do a Vol 3 “ time forgotten stories “ 1919-1949 “ . Also with the discounted bikes we haven’t got those great deals In Australia as we don’t have the same strict Euro restrictions. Even though we still get the bikes restricted the same way ( we just take the cats off and retune to fun the way they should) or even the way the manufacturers would like .
TUBES - the best compromise of Tube or tubeless ( both ) 🤔. So tubed front as that’s were you will mostly get bent rims ( off road riding ) so for off road a front tube is always a benefit to carry and as a temporary fix you can also put a front tube in a rear . So rear tubeless - as harder to change and get off and on and generally less punchers.

Nothing under a grand for 3rd party F&T in London and the same if I bought a 10-year-old Euro 4 model for half the price. I inquired about certain other bikes, like the Yamaha MT-125 and XSR-125, both more powerful than the Honda, and they both got premiums around £800.

Hi Freddie, regarding punctures in tubed tyres. A great guy called Ian who until very recently ran his TH-cam channel, Old School ADV Rider, swore by a product called 'Slime'. It has been around for many years and one bottle of this treats two tyres. It is a pre puncture treatment which will seal any new punctures, often without the rider being aware that they've even had a puncture. There was an example that he stated where a rider took his bike in for a new tyre, only to discover there were 5 or 6 punctures in the tube that this product had sealed. Worth considering perhaps....

  • @m2menuiserie540
    @m2menuiserie540 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

Tubeless are _much_ safer, Freddie, for road use. I've had a blowout on a tubed tyre at speed and it was very scary. Most punctures are on the rear wheel (the front tyre launches the missile backwards) and if you've got a plugging kit and a means of inflation they can be repaired quickly and easily at the roadside. If you do it properly the plugged repair will last safely until the tyre is worn out. Compact, reasonably priced, quality kits are available.
Tubes do have their virtues in the wilderness, far from civilisation (including London and Ipswich), but you'll need to carry a spare plus heavy tyre levers plus . . .
If it's a Rokon, of course, you could fill the tyres with water or bourbon.

Anyway i guess it's what you prefer in the end, i prefer to be able to fix of swap an innertube whenever where ever, carrying around a full heavy extra tire seems ridiculous for punctures! And yes you can fix a puncture on a tubeless, but that means get your ass to a shop and get a new tire, which will cost you time and money, WAY more time and money then an innertube!

The Benelli Sei you showed is the later model. The original was similarly styled to the Moto Guzzi T3 - probably because De Tomaso owned both companies. I don't think the later styling has anything to do with the Hurricane. The late Guzzi and Benelli styling was influenced by the boxy look of late 70's cars and had far more to do with De Tomaso taking control of the styling. The Benelli 500-4's engine was so similar to a Honda 500 that there were rumours about some parts being interchangeable although I've never heard of anyone actually proving it.

On the tube or tubeless question, I believe tubeless makes more sense. Not all punctures require a new tire, some can be managed with the puncture kit. As a guy that rides everyday, having tubed tires is risky and troublesome. Imagine when you riding quite fast and the tube punctures.

To be fair, a lot of places (in the UK at least) won’t plug a bike tyre under any circumstances.
It’s obviously safe enough to be trusted given the number of comments here but it’s not really the same as plugging a car tyre. On a car you’ve got three failsafes and arguably less critical reliance on the wheels for stability.
Whilst I can agree with the benefits of tubeless, I’d still favour a new tyre over a plugged one if I got a puncture.

All old bikes are not selling, which is ridiculous because of how cheap they are.
It gets even worse when you go pre-ABS times, new riders are scared of not even having traction control, much more about lacking ABS braking.
It's a little sad at times to see these marvelous bikes be standing in a shed or even out in the open with no interest from anyone.
At some point they'll be scrapped.
I got a Honda CBR 600 F2 PC25 with only 18k km on it for only 1.75k €, it now has 24k km.
I just got a Kawasaki ER-5 with a little more than 11k km for only 1k €. The valve service at 12k km would cost at least 500€ according to the Kawasaki workshop.
The cost of ownership exceeds the bikes value in most of those cases, if you don't work on it yourself you might as well ride it to scrap doing no service at all and buy another old one instead, which is an admittedly painful idea to think about.
