Thank you. Believe it or not, that was still useful info in October 2021! Having been put some place aside and forgotten long time ago, an ancient old laptop runs Windows 10 Home edition like clockwork now, just with the support of a 120 GB SSD and 4GB additional RAM.

    Great explanation.
When I tried to install the 840 EVO, sliding it when the computer was up side down as in the video. The bios didn't recognized the EVO drive and I felt like it didn't connect (loose) with the computer connectors (I couldn't close the second (inner) screw, the screw was too short). I took the EVO out and swap the computer to be up side up, then I've slide in the drive again and now I felt that it did connected, swapped the computer (up side down) screwed both screws (now it screwed). And now everything is working :)
    Thank you and best regards,
    Chen

Believe it or not, I also pulled out my E4300, put in 8GB RAM instead of 4, installed Ubuntu on it, and it works like a charm, lightweight laptop with a good keyboard and much solid then current stuff sold. Will do the SSD upgrade as well soon.

I put a 250gb Samsung 840 in my ThinkPad x220 and I love it! Out of all the SSDs I own, this seems to run the best, I also needed the 7mm height since my laptop doesn't take full height SSDs. I dual boot the machine with Fedora 18 (Main OS) and Windows 8 Pro so I have the SSD partitioned into two partitions, half for each OS.

The CD contains software that allows you to clone a HDD to the new SSD to make the switchover a bit easier.

They also had the Pro version you have in the store, but it cost almost as much as I paid for the laptop itself :D

The 840 is a very good SSD, had it in my Alienware, but sold it with the drive for much (much) more than I originally paid for the computer.

I splurged on an SSD 830 drive last year. Migrating the OS from a larger drive and with correct partition alignment was a royal mess, but it was well worth it.
Be sure to leave some unpartitioned space ("over-provisioning"), or else the drive may at some point suffer the fate of the other Samsung gear. The rule of thumb seems to be about 10%, I left about 1/6 free.
Also make sure that AHCI is enabled in BIOS setup when using SSDs, preferably before OS install (else it may get a bit messy).

I build the same SSD in my desktop last week as replacement for my OCZ Vertex3. I sold the OCZ because a friend of mine had 2 broken ones in a decade of 1 Year. The Samsung is great fast but has TLC Memory that is quit cheaper than the usual MLC Memory. But transfer rates are great you can´t complain for 80 Euros. I like Samsung for their exellent Computer Hardware like HDDs,SSDs,DDR Memory and Monitors. Never had an Samsung Product that broke.

Nice to see you again Jonas! A good upgrade. I like Samsung too, YMMV!!! So now we have an SSD what is the CD for? Is it software that prevents wear and death by swap file? I still use the old spinning disc, I know they don't just drop dead but I am paranoid(OCD) about the NAND wearing out!

No, it all can't be compared because the system was previously running the slow Windows Vista, now I have the faster Windows 7 on there.

Thanks for the video. I'm finding that changing the HDD to an SSD is the easy part. I cannot get this computer to USB boot to reinstall my Windows iso file. I've tried Microsoft's USB downloader tool and UnetBootin - both failed. Going to try Rufus or something else.

  • @DrCassette

I guess you got unucky with Samsung. 2/3 of our computer monitors (the 3rd is a Gateway), and 2/4 of our TVs (mine and the main one) are Samsung (the other 2 are Sharp and Panasonic). Even my first TV (a TV-VCR combo) was a Samsung. But I will say, they probably aren't as good as the Sony XBR series; however, Samsung is is a close second for me.

Is this supposed to be funny? When I was in puberty, I wasn't even on TH-cam. I clearly say what I think about things, even and especially when it's negative. It's a good thing to have high standards/expectations as a consumer since there won't be a whole lot of technical progress without.

  • @DrCassette
    @DrCassette  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, let's see...
...we had a Samsung DVD recorder that didn't work properly right from the start and failed two years later
...we had a Samsung computer monitor that one day just wouldn't turn on anymore
...I had two Samsung camcorders that failed due to low quality components/poor design
...I have a Samsung smartphone that works about as smooth as a tank
...several friends Samsung TVs failed for no obvious reason
