The 400 Mile Medieval Pilgrimage To Canterbury | Pilgrimage With Simon Reeve | Chronicle

  • For centuries pilgrimage was one of the greatest adventures on earth, involving epic journeys across the country and around the world. In the Middle Ages, the Church encouraged people to journey to shrines across the country. The most popular was the shrine of Thomas Beckett in Canterbury Cathedral, a journey brought to life in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
Simon embarks on a 400 mile journey to Canterbury from the north of England, beginning at the mystical Holy Island, just off the coast of Northumberland. To reach the island, one of the earliest sites of Christian pilgrimage in Britain, Simon follows a line of posts marking out a crossing that emerges from the North Sea at low tide.

My guess on the audio: they are mistakenly using the Left front and Right front channels from a 5.1 surround mix, which sounds like garbage without the center channel. They should provide a two channel stereo mix.
A pretty common problem on TH-cam, for content of this time period and provenance.

Thats probably the silliest thing ive heard in my life ... "Im not a religious person but i wish i was" Why ?!? Nobody wishes they had Mental Illness .. well maybe the odd weirdo does but seriously .... Why would you want to dissgard all we have learned through the thousands of years about how things Really are and work, to then say "God did it" Thats Mental dude . You should have an Open Mind, Not a closed one . Your mind should be Open to Evidence of some deity etc etc .... Not stop at what you "Believe" to be true ... But get stuck one WHAT IS TRUE, By the Evidence, Not assertions . Science and the Scientific Method will show you whats demonstrable.
"To Believe something is to be Convinced of something without Evidence"

I don't know how I ended up watching this video from beginning to end but it brought back a memory of a friend and I (we were both 16) were on a day trip to Millport, Isle of Cumbrae, Scotland when we missed the last ferry back across to Largs and the train back to Glasgow where we both lived.
It had been raining off and on all day and we ended up sitting in a Café chatting with a couple of girls when was saw the last bus to the last ferry pass the window.
Our clothes were slightly wet and no doubt we could have tried to get some sleep in one of the beach shelters but it was rather cold to be sleeping rough especially when we weren't prepared to do so.
One of the girls suggested that we go up to the Cathedral of the Isles and ask is they had any where that they could put us up for the night as we were stranded on the island for the night.... we were welcomed in and shown to little basic rooms with a single bed with no other furniture in the rooms or cells.
Above each room was a plaque with "Faith" "Hope" "Charity" etc etc along this long corridor of small room.
We were given an old army blanket which was clean but scratchy as the blankets were rough but they were warm.
I slept off and on as the rain was heavy at times and was hitting the window but other than that it was very quiet there, didnt hear anyone during the night.
We got up around 7am and decided we better head back to Glasgow to where we worked as apprentice Gardeners.
I emigrated to Canada when I was 21 and it wasnt until my 2 sons were in their mid teens that i took them to Millport and to the Cathedral and a tour of the Cathedral and its grounds to get a feel for its history and its ancient tombstones.
I am not a religious person but I always has a connected feeling to the Cathedral and Millport the town it's self.
For some reason the thought of going on a pilgrimage appealed to me but now in my mid 60s Osteoarthritis is causing me a lot of pain, both knees replaced and my right shoulder and now i have difficulty walking long distances and unfortunately the cold and damp of the west of Scotland would make things more painful for me....
Sorry for blethering too much... but thanks for sharing the video.

23:41. I'm neither catholic nor protestant...and I find this kind of of protest absolutely bizarre. Why not let people worship in the way they want to worship? They're not doing any harm, why bother them with signs and protests? Seeking to control how others worship God is absolutely antithetical to what the Saviour taught.

This secular attitude was only invented around the time of the "Age of Enlightenment" (17th-18th Century or thereabouts). For millennia, the thought of any society allowing for freedom of thought, speech, religion etc, was anathema, and usually punished severely. And to talk to one of the ancients (if we could) about the" separation of church and state" , he/she would have thought you were insane. It took centuries and a lot of blood and death for the people of the modern Western world to be able to agree with your principles about freedom, etc. They are not shared globally (Ref: The Taliban).
BTW Jesus was not a "freethinking modern liberal" since he said: "NO ONE comes to the Father but through ME" . (you can look it up)

I have to say that the man with white hair at about 24:20 is a bigot and should be ashamed of himself plus he obviously doesn’t have a clue as to what he’s talking about. Catholic’s do not worship saints at all. They also don’t worship Mary and definitely do not worship the dead. In Catholicism Saints are venerated not worshipped there’s a huge difference. If you know someone who has lost a loved one or maybe its you who have lost someone close to you, then you have probably seen that person maybe go to the cemetery and while standing or kneeling next to the grave of the person they have lost speak “to” the person they lost. Also, you may have seen someone who while looking at a photograph of the person they lost speak to them. Now in both cases it’s not a 2 way conversation, they don’t expect the dead person to answer them lol. This is actually more common than you would think, it’s just that it’s usually done when they are alone. It occurs most often by certain categories of people such as: widows (older ladies) especially if they had been married for a long time like 40-50 years, widows (young ladies) especially those whose husband died in combat, widower (men) especially those who lost their wife due to an illness, people who lose a parent especially if they were either extremely close or had a strained relationship that wasn’t fixed before the parent died.
Furthermore Catholicism is not a cult and it’s not part of the occult lol
Now that gentleman shouldn’t be there bothering people who are participating in a religious ceremony or event. I didn’t hear him talk about how often he stands outside the local mosque and harasses muslims. Also, he seems to forget that 500 years ago everyone in England was Catholic and the reason Henry left the Catholic Church was because he wanted an annulment of his marriage to a woman who used to be his brother’s wife. He also probably forgets that the Bible he reads was put together by the bishops of the Catholic Church back in the late 4th century or that Martin Luther removed 7 books from the Old Testament because they didn’t line up with his version of theology.
The bottom line is he shouldn’t be there bothering those people and should be arrested for a hate crime which under current British law he is committing. As I mentioned he should go try that nonsense in front of a mosque. Or maybe the Catholics should have just beat him down or stone him or better yet get him stoned maybe then he would lighten up.

You're wife and son may give you meaning but they won't get you to heaven. This man failed to understand faith and mocked it

Not once did he mock faith. He was trying to understand it.

Just shows the stupidity of these people to give these churches all their money. The creator of the universe does not need a building. His creation is the real church. The rest is just idolatry!

At 22:22... Can't hear that song without thinking of one of my gd-father, a witty pagan (ex altar boy). He taught me : "Les saints et les anges et le petit Jésus, quand ça les démange, se grattent le c.., avé, avé, avé le petit doigt"... My gran was furious...
