      Thank you, that's kind of you. I'm sorry you didn't get an interview, but I hope you're not downhearted. It takes a heroic effort even to apply. I didn't get into Cambridge when I was a teenager, and I guess with the advantage of age (and maybe a bit of wisdom!) I've come to realise how little it mattered.

      Love the idea that marketing arts might deprive it from its core values like creating non-monetary value, suprising the audience by creating something out of the ordinary, criticizing particular aspects of society.
      However I´d argue some sucessful chart music out there proves that point wrong :D

    I dont see how any of this is relevant for success in an economics degree. Maybe Business or Marketing. From an Economics student I'd want to see ability to think logically, passion for social/economic issues, awareness of the world, maybe some intuition for following economic causality.

  • @neoepicurean3772

    Haha, I'm a mature student who has just done a degree in PPE and I was wondering what the interview process would have been like if I'd gone to Oxford when I was the standard age: but I didn't go to university back then as I started managing rock bands... So this question is right up my street - although I'm not sure how I'd answer the question as to make it as a band you just have to be lucky. Great bands often don't make it, many poor bands do, it's just a right place right time sort of thing, but of course you have to record music and do shows etc.

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571

      Yes, you can. The mathematics will not require high school level training, more just numeracy and intuition. The tutors will help you solve the puzzles.

    If you haven't studied economics at A level.. But if you've read a lot about the subject and areas you are interested in.. Would you still be at a disadvantage going into the interview? Also the potential interview would be for history and Economics.. Not straight economics..

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      No, you're not at a disadvantage if you haven't studied economics at A-level. Most candidates have never studied economics before coming to interview. Sometimes, ironically, it can be a disadvantage having studied economics, because candidates are too tempted to share theories they have learnt rather than thinking for themselves.
      For history can economics, you tend to be interviewed separately for both subjects rather than with a conjoined interview.

    Do you think I should apply next year ( currently in year 12)? For GCSEs I got 4,5,5,6-5,6,6,7,7 and my uni admissions teacher told me I shouldn’t bother even if I do get good enough predicted grades next year. I really want to do ppe at Oxford but I’ve always been a middle set student. I currently do Economics, Geography and Computer science

    • @JG-vv7ew
      @JG-vv7ew 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, just my advice but if you did really want to try applying then make sure that at least 3 of your other choices are more certain. Truth be told its kinda unlikely you'll get an offer just because of how competitive the course is, but there are loads of other excellent unis for PPE.

    • @alexburnett560
      @alexburnett560 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately Oxford will most likely look at your gcse grades and think that they’re not good enough because everyone applying will get all 8s and 9s probably , or at least those that get in will have that , and so even if you are exceptionally gifted at your a levels it is unlikely they will give you the offer :(

      @@bossman5101 you don't need to ask for permission to make those sorts of connections. You need to explain to us why those connections are relevant, which they certainly can be.
      Just be careful when demonstrating your knowledge of economic theories, because the interview is not primarily about demonstrating knowledge but about showing off your thinking skills. Sometimes when you are sidetracked by discussing well-established theories you can diminish your own capacity to theorise.
