Just noticed you can see Warwick and Richard, Duke of York sitting off to the side at some point(s) during the scene.

The Duke of Gloucester (King Henry VI's paternal uncle and Lord Protector of England) married his English common mistress Eleanor following the annulment of his marriage to a noblewoman. Eleanor was later caught practicing witchcraft because she wanted the King to die so her husband would gain power. She was tried, convicted and imprisoned for life. The scandal caused Gloucester to lose his job as Lord Protector. (He is later arrested for treason, and is murdered on the orders of the Queen and her boyfriend the Duke of Somerset.) It also helped Henry VI's wife Margaret to become more influential over her husband, because his uncle was no longer around to contradict her.

While normally I'd agree about racial casting, this is intended to be a Shakespearean stage play but just filmed, so they hire the best stage actors, even the actors who are well known for film roles have experience performing Shakespearean plays on stage.
They chose Sophie Okonedo cause of her acting talent, not cause she fitted a particular racial aesthetic, just as they'd do for other Shakespearean plays.

You came looking for a documentary not realising it’s Shakespeare. You must feel stupid

@@G1NZOU I'm sure they could have found an equally good white actress as well, or at least attempted to do some makeup. There is an obvious ideological intent to "blackwash" history here, just like with making Duke of York black in Henry V. Even if the story is fictional, the characters aren't.

and no-one spoke in iambic pentameter - equally absurd.
This is a dramatic reconstruction not a true to life representation and so a black actress representing a french woman is not out of place.
      Besides, Sophie Okonedo is brilliant.
