    When I saw that caboose it reminded me of when I went through my PADI Instructor Development course (I've been a scuba instructor since 2008). My instructor had a caboose like that, and he used it as room & board for students during the week. Heck, spending a week in one of those was an education all by itself!

    FYI: When I lived in Montana, I had a diesel pickup truck so having a block heater was a must. But I like to camp like you two do and no power for a block heater became an issue. So, I bought one that hooked up to a propane bottle in the back of my pickup. It worked great on that and getting into a truck that was instantly warm when I started it up was a huge plus! :)

    Good idea to use the cover for your down comforter. I bet that is very warm. I agree that sleeping bags aren’t the most comfortable. Have you tried a wood stove fan? They sit on top of the wood stove and the heat actually makes it spin. We rigged one to fit onto our buddy heater and it works great. I suppose it might not be powerful enough for you. Works pretty great for us. I particularly like it cuz it doesn’t require any power source. Linda always does such an awesome job telling the history of the places you guys visit. I fail pretty miserably most of the time on giving a good history of areas. Thanks for the tour of the area.

    Hi Rick and Linda. Re your new bedding: if you don’t have flannel sheets, you’re missing something. I use flannel bedding all year. Regular sheets are cold in winter and clammy hot in summer but I find that the texture of flannel is just the opposite. I’ve made a duvet cover with flannel on the underside. Very cuddly. ❤️🐈‍⬛😎

    Say it's ain't so! Rick got off the knuckles and installed twin propane tanks with an auto switch...
    For those batteries, I'd put an inch or 2 pink foamboard underneath and against the wall for insulation, keep them batteries warm. Did you ever try a sterling motor fan on top the stove? Now that's a pie x 2...
    We're off to Ajo, camp just south of town, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument after that. Stay a couple days and indulge in full hookups, showers.
    Take care you kidz.

      @gonagain I was wrong about full hookups, just a dump station. 10 bucks a night with golden senior pass.
      Going back to Ajo. Chatted with a lady, there's a big event at that nice town center today, spend a couple hours, then to Organ Pipe. Spent a nice night out on Darby Well Rd. BLM Land, something I saw watching one of your videos.

    I have a friend that has an all-steel fan for his wood heater. He places it on the top of the wood stove and the draft created by the heat coming off the stove runs it. So it only runs when the stove is warm, and it costs no power because it does not use any. He says it works great to keep their sailboat warm. Another plus is the hotter the stove gets the faster the fan runs.

My wife and I are expanding our Montana horizons towards the Central Montana "Island Ranges" (Big Belts, Little Belts, Castles, Little Rockies, Judiths, Moccassins, Little Rockies, Big Snowies, and Bear Paw) and some of the surrounding small towns including White Sulphur Springs, Checkerboard, Harlowton, Niehart, Monarch, Belt, Wilsall, Winifred, and Zortman. And the thought of coming to the Shade Tree Cafe and seeing delicious pie such as that Maple Cream and Cherry Pie started me druling.
    If and Lord willing, I make it out to Montana in my converted 12 window school bus, I'm sure to see beautiful country never seen before.
    Hopefully I can make it happen just before Winter as you guys did in this video.

    When mom and dad lived in Polaris MT, there was a one room schoolhouse with a school marm. It was grades one through six. In the winter the children road snowmobiles to school and when there was no snow, they road horses to school. That was not that long ago either. That was in the 1970s and 1980s. The schoolhouse was smaller than that bank you pointed out in Geyser and iit was the marm's residence too.

    My dad and his wife used to own Elkhorn Hot Springs in Montana and he said when he sold it and moved to Washington state, after owning it and living there for 5 years, the hardest thing to get used to was not having 20 pounds of blankets on top of them when they slept. giggles. They did not heat their home at night and living at 7600 feet above sea level, the nights got down to below zero and so did their cabin so they had a lot of blankets on them. giggles

I do get away from here when I can’t take the politics of NY and we take our camper to Tennessee and spend several weeks there visiting our daughter. She is in Nashville area and is helping spread the word of sanity with her job, I hope to spend 6 months there and 6 months back in NY when my wife finally retires, my son will be staying in NY because of work but if he could he would leave also. Thanks for the tour - love small town Montana - I grew up in Colorado but my grandparents homesteaded in Lavina around 1910 and my mom’s cousin lived on a huge ranch near Ryegate. The general mercantile store in Lavina; Slayton’s , now on the national Register, was operated by a relative for many years back in the day. My mom’s uncle Oscar Balgaard was a state senator for years. I have a one acre parcel on the Smith River at Two Creeks so know the Little Belts well. I am 75 now and my wife and I live in AZ (Gold Canyon) and Pagosa Springs, CO in the summer. We have a daughter in Whitefish. Hope to get to the Smith River this summer- we have a truck camper. remind all of us all, how much R value do you have in your: Walls | Floor | Ceiling | Back-Door | Entrance Door?
    I use 2 x King Size IKEA "Winter" quilts in one duvet cover, because I've only used my heater once when in Flagstaff it fell to -16f... But if it isn't "dangerously" cold I don't heat at all. As a Tucsonian (Tucson where it's "Always Hot & Sunny), anything -10f and warmer is "free" A/C...

    • @gonagain
      @gonagain  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a great way to look at it! We only have 1" in the walls and side door, 2" in the floor, 1½" in the ceiling and back ramp.

      I try to use the "R" value because 1" of one type vs another is usually different. The insulation I use is R6 for 1", but is 13.1 for 2". Since I doubled up on the ceiling, I wonder if it is more than 2x13.1 or like the difference of 1" to 2", there is more gain?

I dropped my electric usage from 14,000 watts down to 1,200 watts! Flagstaff isn't Montana, but we've had a solid week of mid-20s and cloudy days making solar very limited.

      In a roundabout way. They make an adapter for the AC200L that wasn't available when I made the video.

    Where did Linda get her hat? Love it!

      Thanks! I got the hat from a farm and ranch store; it's a Stetson, soft wool. I love it too but am still looking for one with a slightly wider brim.

    Interesting episode 🎉 A homemade pie sponsor would be great but how can that happen? 😂

      I'll try to think of something because the rewards would be great.

    Are the bubbling geysers still in Geyser Montana?

      I've tried to find them via Google maps but nothing shows up. I'd like to ask a local historian if they know about those.

    Are you using the feather comforter as a Blanket? And is that enough cover for the 40 degree sleeping temperature?

    • @gonagain
      @gonagain  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, as a blanket and it's nice and warm. It got down to 40deg in the trailer and it kept us warm.

    You might get lucky and get to see/hear Johnny Cash play at the Cougar Canyon Bar.

      @gonagain  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That would be lucky indeed!

    This is THE channel for great practical-common-sense approach to boondocking. WHAT? You have a pie video? It's not pinned. 😪 Tiffany is adorable, she "dreams big" like my husband and I did - not an Airstream, but something budget friendly.

    You need to change your I guess music it is so drab sounding, I actually mute the tv when it is playing

      It really doesn't matter what music I use because it's guaranteed that someone won't like it.

    Like# Embarrassing - for sure notifications are not working... I'm gonna try un-subbing and re-subbing. It's not like I don't know what is what, I run a darn data center, I have a BS - ISM... So frustrating
