I give Seaworld a lot of credit for the rescue and rehabilitation program they have at their parks. I recently went to see Orcas in the wild (including the worlds oldest living orca) and talked to a lot of the locals who interact with these pods everyday. The only thing I don't understand is how people can support Seaworld when their company is the inspiration to corporations in Russia who are currently capturing orcas in the wild, Seaworld has yet to bring global attention to these recent captures on any of their social media to try to get this practice to stop. It makes me wonder whether they really care about stopping orca captures or if they see this as an opportunity to further their orca gene pools in their own parks. I see that you go a lot and was wondering for your opinion on this and orca captivity. I want to be a vet one day and the psychology of captivity is fascinating yet eye opening I struggle going anywhere that has animal entertainment, I say this to clarify I'm not just against Seaworld (although I am not fully against Seaworld) but I see it as if these animals were built to survive in the ocean they should do perfectly well in a sea pens (I understand these whales might not be able to survive with out human care after years in captivity). Thank you.
Maddie E SeaWorld has nothing to do with Russian facilities and wild captures. The orcas at SeaWorld can’t be put into sea pens. It’s a death sentence. These whales don’t know what the ocean is. And with all that’s wrong with the ocean, it would be a death sentence to put them into it. Orcas have died and suffered in sea pens as well with other cetaceans. Captive orcas at SeaWorld and even other marine parks are use to fresh, well cleaned salt water, fresh fish, no weird germs or animals. Which also it isn’t a good idea to mix captive orcas up with other animals, that could break in or swim into the pen especially. They can consume different non consumable things which can make them ill and kill them overtime. And the pens can break down, no matter how ‘well’ built they are. Are there is other things wrong with sea pens as well. Please, focus on the wild populations of orcas that are suffering and dying in the ocean, before wanting captives dead as well. Not trying to be rude, just saying.
