Welcome back to the German Autobahn. In this video you can drive along on the A648 and A5 starting in Frankfurt am Main. The A5 around FFM carries quite a lot of traffic, explaining the 2x4 lanes alignment.
From around 5:56 you can see some overhead infrastructure on the A5. This was installed a while ago as part of an official testing route for electric trucking.
Here is a German article about it: www.faz.net/aktuell/rhein-mai...

Hi ! I’m from Alsace ( Colmar ) and I have already driven on this autobahn ! Do you know why the concrete is différent on the different lanes ? Did they add up more lanes by the time ? 👍🏼👍🏼 nice video !!

Hi! Thanks for stopping by, you live in a beautiful area. I am not exactly sure, but surely the A5 has been expanded over time. It also looks like a lot of quick patch work has been done throughout the years in order to avoid long-term closures on an important Autobahn like this one. This explains some of the differences in surface.

@@nielsontheroad As I can see on your various videos you live close to my area am I right ? Are you from Baden Wurtemberg ? 🇩🇪Anyway thanks for the answer. I have an other question: I know in the late 70’s80’s German Autobahn were mostly made of concrete :is it still the case nowadays? We had several km’s made of concrete too on the A35 between Colmar/ Selestat / Obernai and It aged very bad ( hopefully since 2013 they have made road constructions to bring up the road to actual standards ). I’m also a kind of a « highway » fan since I work with LKW and I, with my car, very often drive between Baden Württemberg / Switzerland and Elsass ! Thanks !

@@telicc Yes I live in the Southwest of Germany but I am not from here ;-) The majority of the Autobahn is asphalt, I think roughly 30% is concrete or the right lane is concrete. I believe concrete is preferred for stretches of Autobahn that carry a lot of (heavy) trucks, the concrete is supposed to hold the weight better and age slower. However, I am not sure about the ageing part either. I feel like a lot of concrete highways are bumpy to drive on and often full of holes. That's also mostly been my experience in the USA.

@@nielsontheroad good point regarding the heavy trucks ! And yes I also experienced US highways while studying abroad and as I remembered ( by driving in New York and Florida ) most of them highways were made of concrete and very bumpy. I have a clear memory of elevated highways in some Metropolitan areas on which you could hear the “connexions” noises every 20/30 meters created by the junction between the various bridge parts like “Tonk tonk” ….. “tonk tonk” … . To be honnest it was very appeasing. But of course we cannot compare with Europe since the road network in North America has been developed way before. Anyway thanks for your answers ! Good day 👍🏼
