Fun video. I couldn’t tell a significant difference between the two. The way i look at it, the DeepMind gives you way more modulation options, a killer arpeggiator and effects, plus the electronics are going to be a lot more stable than a 25 year old Juno 106 with dying chip problems.
If the Behringer synth parts are part of a busy mix, or Behringer is being played live, then, yes, for the patches show in Part 1 & Part 2 of this comparison, l there isn't a significant difference between the Juno 106 & the Behringer. However, I do wonder if the Behringer can be tweaked sufficiently to be 'close enough' with all of the Juno 106 presets & with most or all iconic patches that appeared in well-known songs. As for the dying voice chips; that is caused by a protective lacquer on each chip that broke down over time due to heat from the chip. The products of the breakdown (but not the original lacquer) are able to conduct electricity, so it was inevitable that the voice chips would short-out & fail. Also, until someone discovered that cause, replacement chips would also fail. Now, one can purchase voice chips without the lacquer, or (if the owner is brave enough) the lacquer can be dissolved using a specific solvent, then the voice chip re-installed. The bottom line is that the dying voice chip problem is no longer needs to be an issue. 🙂

Man, thank you so much for doing these comparison vids, yours are hands down the most comprehensive, detailed, and well-rounded. If I could make one request it'd be to spend a bit more time with the filters mostly or fully open, IME the most critical differences in the tone of vintage vs. remakes is in the buzz/air. Usually the older synths have more energy and/or a sweeter texture to the highest harmonics, giving them a more present, sparkling/crackling sound. This is 10x true if the remake is digital, like the Rolands.

@@josephwright5921 I have bought the excellent patch set by GEOSynths for the DM12, and have enjoyed it. And I've also programmed patches myself. But the truth is that, this synth is a 12 voice Juno 106. A single DCO per voice synth. But if you want to have a two DCO per voice, you can by using the Unison-2 mode, which brings the whole machine down to a 6 voice synth. Brother, I really love your videos. And I have a high appreciation for the work that goes into creating such content. With that said, I hope my comment doesn't come across the wrong way :) I think these new retro-synths are amazing - all of them. I'm a child of the 70s and 80s - and fondly remember making music on some really cool vintage machines like the Korg DW 8000, the DX7, and drooling over an OB 8. And although it's fun to recreate those sounds for the sake of nostalgia - I say: why not use the new machines to just create something new. Sure comparing them sound for sound, register for register, etc. is an interesting exercise - but the real magic comes from creating something we haven't heard before :-) Not at all me putting down what you've done here. Just something that's been on my my for a long time :-) Keep on doin' what'cher doin'. Thanks a lot.
Thanks, no worries I know what you’re saying. I like making the little demo tracks with them to show what they can do - I really enjoy sitting for hours noodling away. But to be perfectly honest for TH-cam people are more interested in how it sounds compared to...xx or how to use it. The quick demos get a lot of views as they show what the synths can do... if I uploaded just synth based tracks I’d have to be up there with the synth gods for anyone to bother watching!
@ S Jackson If you're interested in a comprehensive look at the DM12's other capabilities I would suggest having a look at a TH-cam channel call GEOsynths by Jamie Morden. He's a professional patch creator (not that Starsky couldn't achieve the same results if he wanted to - he easily could, but this video is outside that scope) and the GEOsynth channel provides a broad spectrum of what this synth can do. It is very impressive. Hope you enjoy it.
You know when you see identical twin sisters but you just seem to be drawn to one of them no matter what. Great video once again. Btw. It’s the one that was born first.
The Deepmind is a surprising good sounding synth. Didnt have that much low end like the Juno but hey - look at the price tag! 499€ for the 6 voice version!
The deepmind 12 really punches well above its weight class. Got mine used for $550 but this thing would still be worth it at double that price. Really blows any other analog gear near its price range out of the water.
Hello mate great work with these patches, ive tried installing them with Elektron C6 which seems to upload other Sysex patches fine to my Deepmind6 but your patches don't seem to work?
Hi ! your video si really impressive ! Just one question : i ask myself to buy the Behringer Deepmind 6, but i can not try it.. Do you think i can buy it just by seeing videos ? Btw, i play ambient, deep and dub techno and i want a synth comparable to juno for deep and warm pads, dubby sounds and melodies :) Thank you in advance !! :) :) from FR 🇫🇷
Oh also, i can buy the Roland Ju-06A with the Arturia Keystep, but maybe there is more possibilities with the Behringer.. Don't know if it's more interesting to buy the deepmind than the JU-06A
The ju06a will be closer to the original and be easier to use but the Behringer has more sound design possibilities, plus a huge range of FX and the apps to control it all. For deep dub and techno you’ll definitely need some FX so plan them into your system. If you buy from someone like Thomann you have the option to return it if it doesn’t suit your needs. If you’re REALLY into the Roland sound then go with the Ju - if you want some more flexibility maybe the Deepmind. :)
This is excellent Starsky Carr! Thanks for doing both Part 1 & Part 2 of the comparison between a real Juno 106 & a Behringer Deep Mind 12. A question for you Starsky Carr: Given what you know about the Deep Mind's architecture, as well as the design of Roland's classic vintage synths, would it be possible for the Deep Mind to get equally close to the sounds of Roland's other famous synths (e.g. in the Jupiter series, the JX series, and other Junos)? Thanks!
That’s a tough one. The JX8p would be closest - I think the filter is more similar - the JX3P filter is more like the 106. The Jupiter has x-mod which the alpha can’t touch, but generally they all have that Roland flavour.
Once I could hear the difference, I couldn't *un-hear* it. There's such a nice midrange solidity/definition in the 106... the DM sounds slightly 'tubey' and hollow in a way the 106 doesn't. The DM sounds great! --but there's just something about the 106....
when i try to open the file from dropbox, it tells me that the file cannot be opened because I do not have the right application to open the file. What application do I need to download to actually open the file?
You’ll need something like the sysex librarian for Mac. There are loads of these. Electron also make one called C6 I think which you can use on anything as far as I know. They simply read the file and transfer it to the synth. You may even be able to open it in a midi track in your daw, and adjust playing speed to get the correct bitrate to the synth.
I noticed a slight phasing with the Juno chorus which is missing on the dm12 chorus. However, there is a phase effect in the dm... would it come closer using that in serial with chorus at the end of the chain?
DM12 multi fx is a beast. You can do everything :D. There are also tube pres and various saturation simulations to give more "oldness" to the sound. Very inspiring!
It's crazy how you can tell the Juno just sounds better. I was doing something else with this video in the background, and each time a lush and beautiful sound made me be like "Uh, what's this?" It happened to be the Juno each time. It has more depth, grit, and warmth. Somehow the DeepMind sounds too "perfect" and digital, relies too much on digital effects imo. The Deepmind doesn't quite come close to the analog Chorus I in the Juno.
I'm really impressed by how nice the deepmind can sound. What are your thoughts on the rev 2 vs the deepmind? The rev 2 offers a hell of a lot more in terms of modulation and features but what about the sound? Do you ever find it's extremely necessary / useful to have 3 envelopes and 4 lfos or is it really overkill? Gives you a lot of potential but is it musically useful?
That’s a good question... I have used 4 LFOs on the but I could cope with less. Normally it was to add some slop on the P8. The increased slop on the Rev 2 sorts this out anyway. They’re good for evolving pads. I don’t think you can really compare the DM with the Rev2 because of the different oscillators . The rev 2 is more flexible there - and almost double the price for the 8 voice and another £500 on top of that for the 16 voice plus additional for the editor. Behringer probably realised they didn’t want to occupy the same space as the P8/Rev2 and Peak, so stayed with an enhanced 106 at extremely good value.
Some really great patches (really love the last few minutes) - Do you make music in this style? I don't know what you'd call it - synth wave? I Can you limit the DM12 to 6 voices? Seems like quite a nice effect on the Juno when it runs out of voices. Part of the reason I ask about modulation is i'm massively impressed spec wise with the moog one in theory. There seems like there's no other poly that can even start to come close to its modulation. Sound wise I haven't been particularly wowed by anything I've heard though - sounds good but not massively better than anything I've heard from synths before. I'm wondering if all of the modulations is really overkill. The closest in terms of mod capabilities for a poly synth is probably the Rev 2. I'm not sure if it's worth the money really but i've very temped by it. Seems like a synth you could create anything you could ever imagine on in theory. I haven't heard anything particularly new from it though so I don't know if that is just theoretical. Kind of like modular where people seem to mostly either make unmusical blips and bloops / noise or make something you could easily accomplish with a regular synth like a P6 or OB6. I have been wondering whether I should get an OB6 - love the sound but it seems really weak on modulation options.
Thanks, but no it's not what I'd record... just noodling about here. You can limit the DM12 to 8 or 6 voices, along with the envelope curves means it's really flexible. Rev2 is amazingly flexible on modulation, much more so than the OB6. If modulation is your thing the P8, Rev2 or DM are good options. I'm more comfortable with the Rev2/P8 workflow tbh, they're more knobby which means more instant. A couple of years ago I made a video showing the P8 doing modular style drone with leaps etc. Sounds very much like the blips and bloops you get from some modular demos. th-cam.com/video/aIJXexL4TgM/w-d-xo.html
@@StarskyCarr Does the deepmind have a lot of menu diving for modulation and various settings? I know of assumed it was a very intant knob per function type deal. Is it not? The P8 I didn't really get on with the menu / modulation assignment side of things but from what I can see the rev 2 is much better.
Yes the rev 2 is easier than the P8, less scrolling. To access the modulation on DM just push the Mod button. You do, however, have to scroll through the options - 135 in total - but using the app should be easier. The deeper anything goes, the more options and menus so its a trade off between the 2. What I found most difficult to get used to was one set of env sliders - it's hard to tweak if you change from VCA to VCF and they're using different settings.
They should appear where the new banks appear in the editor. Try making a New Bank yourself and copying a couple of patches over to it - rename it by clicking and holding on the name. .. then check where it's stored. If you're using a mac check the location in the description above. Once you've copied this bank into the same location you should see both your own new bank and the StarskyCarr bank below the DM RAM banks in the editor. Fingers crossed anyway!
Cannot figure out how to get these patches over to the Deepmind... Im on Mac... can anybody offer a step by step as i've tried everything and am at a loss. I have the SysEx Librarian and the Sys file is there. I cannot find a way to load them into the Deepmind editor and i cannot locate any PHAT12 folder on my Mac Please Help
The PHAT12 folder is in your User Library. Go to Finder, click on the "go" menu, hold down Alt, and 'Library' will appear on the menu - click on that. Then just scroll down to find the PHAT12 folder, and then into the 'banks' folder which is in that. Put the .syx files in there, close and reopen the Behringer Deepmind editor, and they should be available on the list.
Editing this as I was wrong, there is a way to upload a whole bank. You select the bank you want to send to the Deepmind on the left, and then select the bank of the actual synth on the right (it has a white keyboard next to it). Then just hit the 'Copy to Right' button and the bank you selected on the left will be uploaded to the one on the actual synth that you selected on the right.
@@sfsounds Hey... thanks for the reply... so i'm looking in my library and i don't have a PHAT12 folder... unless i'm doing something wrong i don't think that folder has been created
@@galangasband4484 Mmm, that's odd. Maybe try reinstalling the Deepmind editor? Or first, create a new bank in the editor, and see if that forces it to create the folder?
@@sfsounds Hey again... So i've now tried everything i can possibly think of along with your suggestions (thanks for that by the way!) ... i still cannot seem to find the PHAT 12 folder and am convinced i do not have one even after downloading the editor again. what is odd is the download from Behringers site is not an installer... its just a straight application. no install take place... maybe thats why its not functioning as expected... so disappointing as i really want to play around with these sounds for our upcoming album
I can honestly hear the difference between the two. They are slight but the Juno sounds better in my opinion. The Juno has a snappier high end with cleaner harmonic tones in the mids to high frequency ranges.
This is a lovely showcase of sounds. I’m curious to know what kind of programming is involved on the Deepmind? Everyone talks about menu diving but on the front panel there is enough functionality to match the Juno sounds without extensive menu diving I’m thinking? Apart from the effects?
It’s only when you start using all the various additional option - like FX, modulation, different envelopes/No of voices etc etc that it becomes pretty intensive menu diving. If you don’t dig that deep (like the using a Juno) you can still get a lot out of it. There’s always the editors to make things easier.
@@TheHitchcockBlues pretty much. I tweaked the chorus, and set it up to act like a Juno 106 - watch my other video to see how to do that - basically just limit the range of sliders etc. But overall yes. The other video is called: Deepmind 12 vs Juno 106: How to get similar tones
Do you have any other Patches you are willing to share? I enjoy sifting through other people’s patches in addition to making my own. Everyone seems to have a different approach to programming and usually creates a few interesting ones.
If you download the file in the description it’s a basic PWM sound. I think the settings are ‘live’ on the video. Set Osc 1 to pulse only, modulated by LFO1.
The low end on some of those patches is where the DM12 seems to fail compared to the Juno and the chorus doesn’t really do it for me on the DM12 otherwise it’s a great. I’m glad I bought mine.
DM12 was initially planned to be a Juno 106 recreation, but the developers went further and made it to be its own thing. I don't think DM12 fails in anything. It's a great synth and there are more expensive synths that can't touch it. So...
Superb demo! The Deepmind 12 is a very good synth and does the Juno 106 almost. I will keep my Deepmind 12 but a Juno 106 is on the way and the should compliment one another using the Deepminds arp. The Juno 106 simple setup just gets the sound.
Is this a troll / joke post ? The JUNO was made between 1984-1988 when production ceased. The Deepmind was inspired by it and used it basic architecture as its fundamental design building block.
@@richardwalley2862 It will drop in price eventually, but i think it will hover around the £400 to £500 and i cant see it dropping much below that, i dont think you will be picking these up for £300 in 5 years time, and after 15 years these synth will still be close to the £500+ mark maybe even more. All analogue synth tend to hold their money, and after a certain time they go up in price,
@@cesanbucek8587 Can you tell me how you loaded them? I have used Sysex Librarian for patch banks that I have purchased and those worked fine. It is not working with this patch bank though.
I start all of these as an initialised patch. It's only a few tweaks here and there to get most 'standard' sounds. Once you start playing with the interactions between the envelopes and filter it'll comes to you pretty quickly.

Nice! It should sound pretty spot on, because Larry used a Juno-60 to make that patch.
Very good video. The Deepmind is a great synth!
Gotta love those blinding blue LEDs!
I love my deepmind. Just add the free Tal Chorus plugin and call it a day :).
Oh yeah I like that plugin.
You know when you see identical twin sisters but you just seem to be drawn to one of them no matter what. Great video once again.
Btw. It’s the one that was born first.
Incredible! Thank you!!!
Awesome dude !! keep up the great channel big love form Dream Frequency ;)
Nice to listen to in the background while browsing! :)
I've intoxicated at PWM pad. I love it!
thta chorus update idea would be great..have you contacted Behringer about it?
Hello Starsky, thank you so much for sharing your patches. Tomorrow i try to load them into the D'mind. So curious :-)
Hope you find them useful.
you got so much toys Starsky !!
The Deepmind is a surprising good sounding synth. Didnt have that much low end like the Juno but hey - look at the price tag! 499€ for the 6 voice version!
On a blind test I actually liked some of the DM sounds more. I don't know if it is blasphemous, but that's how I felt, lol.
Shhh! :)
Hi Starsky. Thank you for the Patches. Oddly when I open Phat12 it is empty. Not sure what I did wrong.
The deepmind 12 really punches well above its weight class. Got mine used for $550 but this thing would still be worth it at double that price. Really blows any other analog gear near its price range out of the water.
Hello mate great work with these patches, ive tried installing them with Elektron C6 which seems to upload other Sysex patches fine to my Deepmind6 but your patches don't seem to work?
might have to sell the Juno-106 and get this. I love the 12 note polyphony and dual LFO's.
I prefer my DM over my old Juno 106. The arpeggiator and effects are powerful
I thought people would flame me for that comment at least I know I'm not crazy. I just gotta fix one voice chip and it's all good.
Did you sell it? I'm considering selling my Juno 106 and Rev2 for the DM.
Yeah I sold it. This unit is way more flexible. It sounds very close. I think the 106 was a little more bass heavy.@@JT-qc2nb
This is a great comparison :-)
so good! thx
Hi ! your video si really impressive ! Just one question : i ask myself to buy the Behringer Deepmind 6, but i can not try it..
Do you think i can buy it just by seeing videos ?
Btw, i play ambient, deep and dub techno and i want a synth comparable to juno for deep and warm pads, dubby sounds and melodies :)
Thank you in advance !!
@@StarskyCarr Hi, I think the Deepmind propose more sound design, thing what i'm looking for. Thank you a lot for your answer, you help me :)
--but there's just something about the 106....
a price..... hahaha
I have heard that there is a hiss noise on the deepmind .. is that something you have noticed?
On my DM there's a constant hiss but only on the headphone output! That one is really hissy, it produces noise when using the wheels for example
Definately no hissing on my machine, it has a very low noise floor
No, haters bullshit. 106 is more noisy, Dx7 first edition was a whitenoisegenerator
proper job youth
well in!
OGASI Nottingham lad?
anyone have the patches still? the drop box link isn't working
It should be working the files are still there.
@@StarskyCarr I got it to work on my phone. I have no idea why my desktop browser wouldn't open it.
Both is sweet, but it's more umf and power in the juno to my ears
. Thanks for the demo! 🙂👍🏽
Its because you use your eyes and watching the name Roland nothing more another option go to the doctor and check your ears
when i try to open the file from dropbox, it tells me that the file cannot be opened because I do not have the right application to open the file.
Starsky Carr is there one for PC that I can use?
Take the analogue Chorus away & they sound pretty much the same. I have an analogue chrus for the Deepmind, and it soubds near identical :)
great! thank you a lot!
Do you still have the deepmind? If so do you have any thoughts on build quality, etc?
Any updated Chorus I effects?
Hi Starsky. Great sounds ;-) Just curious. What bank will the sounds load into?
They should appear where the new banks appear in the editor. Try making a New Bank yourself and copying a couple of patches over to it - rename it by clicking and holding on the name. .. then check where it's stored. If you're using a mac check the location in the description above. Once you've copied this bank into the same location you should see both your own new bank and the StarskyCarr bank below the DM RAM banks in the editor. Fingers crossed anyway!
On Windows the editor saves the patches to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\PHAT12\banks
@@florianinside5666 Thanks - I've added that to the description
Cannot figure out how to get these patches over to the Deepmind... Im on Mac... can anybody offer a step by step as i've tried everything and am at a loss.
I have the SysEx Librarian and the Sys file is there. I cannot find a way to load them into the Deepmind editor and i cannot locate any PHAT12 folder on my Mac
Please Help
Yeah, there’s a definite difference between them, it if you’ve the DM and want to get some patches close to the Juno it should help... hopefully !! :)
@@StarskyCarr awesome thanks for the reply!
So most of these sounds were created using the front panel sliders?
@@TheHitchcockBlues pretty much. I tweaked the chorus, and set it up to act like a Juno 106 - watch my other video to see how to do that - basically just limit the range of sliders etc. But overall yes.
The other video is called:
Deepmind 12 vs Juno 106: How to get similar tones
@@StarskyCarr I just stunned upon it funnily enough it explains everything perfectly! Thanks so much
Do you have any other Patches you are willing to share? I enjoy sifting through other people’s patches in addition to making my own. Everyone seems to have a different approach to programming and usually creates a few interesting ones.
Btw. Can i but youre Juno 106 patches?
Kind regards!
Love that crunchy sound at 2.00 , what settings are used for the patch . thanks
If you download the file in the description it’s a basic PWM sound. I think the settings are ‘live’ on the video. Set Osc 1 to pulse only, modulated by LFO1.
@@StarskyCarr Will do thank you very much
The low end on some of those patches is where the DM12 seems to fail compared to the Juno and the chorus doesn’t really do it for me on the DM12 otherwise it’s a great.
The original Deepmind sounds so much better than this cheap JUNO ( probably made in Japan )
Is this a troll / joke post ? The JUNO was made between 1984-1988 when production ceased. The Deepmind was inspired by it and used it basic architecture as its fundamental design building block.
Oscar Finch Im pre-trolling vintage trolls :D
Sure, Japan made lots of garbage synths, especially that total price of junk Roland Jupiter 8, right?
That juno will continue to go up in value and that DeepMind will drop every day
@@richardwalley2862 It will drop in price eventually, but i think it will hover around the £400 to £500 and i cant see it dropping much below that, i dont
think you will be picking these up for £300 in 5 years time, and after 15 years these synth will still be close to the £500+ mark maybe even more.

Amazing. As a bit of a noob with programming patches, what do most of these start off as?
I start all of these as an initialised patch. It's only a few tweaks here and there to get most 'standard' sounds. Once you start playing with the interactions between the envelopes and filter it'll comes to you pretty quickly.
Starsky Carr Thanks for replying! I’ll have to practice a bit more, got the basics down just usually it still sounds like a saw/square lol.
