    Awww bugger! I was hoping this was the pre-sale for the vise itself.

    Just had to check, 48,08$ to Norway. Probably shipping through something like eBay global shipping program would bring the price down, as it seems to (mostly) have reasonable pricing.

    I was all for buying one, but $17 for shipping made me change my mind. It's not that heavy, why is the shipping so high?

    • @AndrewKleinWW

      Is that the price for UPS ground?

      @@AndrewKleinWW Yes, it was the cheapest option. I thought I had not put in my zip, but I had. Just seems like a really high price for shipping to Illinois.

      Yeah, that does seem really high, I'll look into it

      Mine was $18.50. Don't want Andy to take a hit on shipping, but I also feel UPS is ripping off Andy at the same time. The pre-sale discount made it doable.

      @@AndrewKleinWW UPS charges more for residential delivery, and prices are based more on package size, than by weight. That being said, addresses on my street quote $17.75, but addresses on the other streets around my block are $11.64. Something's off

    Was wondering how this would perform after getting some fine sawdust on it? I have been using leather in my vise and am very happy with that got two pieces for $20 from the scrap bin at Tandy

    You mentioned that the benchcrafted had done better in previous testing. That made me wonder, is it possible that the surface of the material became polished after repeated compression and sliding? Could be an interesting test, "Longevity of Surface Grip".

    Have you ever been to a restaurant that has those self pay credit card / game pads on the table and tried to slide one of those on the table? Whatever non slip rubber they use for the feet seams like it would be incredible for this application.

    Out of curiosity, did you test something like 3M Safety-Walk grip tape? That's what I'm currently using in my vise and it's relatively cheap (I can but it by the foot at my local Ace Hardware) and does a reasonable job. Curious how it compares to yours...

    • @AndrewKleinWW

      Nope, haven’t tried that, but willing to give it a shot.

    • @JDeWittDIY

      @@AndrewKleinWW If you're going to do another test, you could also try a sheet of regular neoprene rubber maybe 1/16" or 1/8" thickness.

    I wonder how it compares to sandpaper. I currently use adhesive backed 220 grit sandpaper with great results. If it beats that, I would be interested!

    • @michael.knight
      @michael.knight 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Doesn't that scratch the object you're clamping? Even when it doesn't scratch during clamping, it's bound to leave marks when you take the object in and out of the vise.

    • @whansen65
      @whansen65 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michael.knight It doesn't scratch your work pieces at all. If you don't believe me, give it a try.

    I build guitars and I hand plane/scrape my back, sides and sound boards to 2mm +/-. I currently clamp in various positions and move the pieces and clamps around which is a pain, is time consuming and introduces errors. I've tried double sided tape but at those thicknesses you'll plane the shape tape into the workpiece and the tape can damage the wood. I've considered a vacuum hold down and may still make one but, will this stuff hold a 1/8" X 8" X 20" piece of spruce or rosewood and allow accurate planing? What about dust? Does it lose it's tack when dusty/dirty? Does it maintain its' grip if washed/cleaned?? Thnx

    • @AndrewKleinWW
      @AndrewKleinWW  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't done actual quantitative test to show exactly how much dust effects the hold, but it doesn't seem to effect it very much. And a wipe down with a wet rage completely restores the grip.

    I would love to be able to pick up some of this lining ahead of the vice release, but UPS pricing to deliver to the UK is too steep for me. I shall save my cash for the main event :)
    Also, sorry, I feel like all the comments on this video are going to be moaning about UPS. Thanks for putting this video together - as with the other videos you've made for the Twin Turbo, it gives me both enormous confidence in the quality of the vice (and the lining material), and a sincere incentive to pony up the cash and support you and the work you've put into it.
