Man this,a great video. I'm struggling w this technique like crazy. This is helping very much thnx. Can u make more of these technique videos. Aiming specifically at the hat hat
Thank you for the feedback. Once I have some other priorities handled, I plan to be a more active channel. I do have a few Hi-Hat tricks I use. In the meanwhile... a good experiment is to start putting in a Hi-Hat stomp in a fill as apposed to only using it to keep time. If you are doing linear fills replace a kick with it. I also sometimes use it as a pick up to a crash or cymbal bell. Both are unexpected to the listener in the middle of a mostly Tom sounds.
Eric, I truly appreciate your feedback. I’m settled into a new place and getting back on track. I just uploaded a video I think you’ll like as the start of a series of 5 minute lessons I’ll be running.
With respect this is completely wrong. There plenty of vids of Carly playing and you can see how he plays his hi hat and its certainly nothing like this. Check out BMW at Santa Barbara bowl.. Even watch his nephew play it.. Carlton Barrett Jnr whose nailed Carly's unique playing style
I do appreciate your response. I disagree most with the statement that there’s plenty of video of his Hi-Hat technique. I did look at the performance referenced and looked for any footage I’ve missed, no clear view of Hi-Hat. I don’t know to what degree his nephew was shown this stuff verses his own take on the sound which does match popular interpretations. I do explain that this as my take on what he does. I do agree that for demonstration purposes, I use this idea repeatedly, which may be misleading to some.
You’ve explained and demonstrated this technique better than anybody I’ve ever seen attempt to try to on TH-cam.

Thank you for your time and effort, I should be able to figure out half of what you said by the 3rd or 4th viewing.
It’s a long lesson, but I don’t think I could have shortened it much effectively.
